🔧 Forester - Front Turn Signal Bulb Replacement
Your Forester’s front turn signal bulbs sit inside the headlight assemblies. You’ll access them from under the hood, twist the bulb socket out, and swap in new amber bulbs.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.3-0.7 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- 🛑 Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key before starting.
- 🛑 Let the headlight area cool if it was recently on (hot plastic and bulbs can burn you).
- 🛑 Avoid touching the new bulb’s glass with bare fingers (skin oils can shorten bulb life).
- 🛑 Battery disconnect is not required for this job.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
- Trim clip removal tool
- Flat-blade screwdriver (small)
- Flashlight
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Front turn signal bulb (amber 7440A) - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2
- Dielectric grease - Qty: 1
đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Open the hood and support it securely.
- Set your flashlight nearby so you can see behind the headlight.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Identify the turn signal bulb socket (behind the headlight)
- Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
- Use a flashlight to look behind the headlight assembly from the engine bay.
- Find the turn signal bulb socket (it’s a twist-lock socket going into the headlight housing).
Step 2: Create room if your hand access is tight
- If you can’t comfortably reach the socket, use a trim clip removal tool to pop up any plastic clips holding nearby intake ducting/snorkel pieces.
- If a clip is stubborn, gently assist with a flat-blade screwdriver (small) to lift the center pin, then remove the clip.
- Move parts aside; don’t force them.
Step 3: Remove the turn signal bulb socket
- Grip the socket firmly by hand (gloves help).
- Twist the socket counterclockwise about a quarter turn, then pull it straight out.
Step 4: Remove the old bulb
- Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket by hand.
- If it’s stuck, gently wiggle it while pulling—don’t twist aggressively.
Step 5: Install the new bulb
- Without touching the glass, push the new amber 7440A bulb straight into the socket until fully seated.
- Optional: Apply a very thin smear of dielectric grease to the socket seal area (not on the bulb glass).
Step 6: Reinstall the socket and test
- Insert the socket back into the headlight housing.
- Twist clockwise until it locks in place (hand-tight).
- Turn the ignition to ON and switch on the turn signal to confirm it flashes normally.
Step 7: Reassemble any clips/ducting you moved
- Reinstall any intake ducting/snorkel pieces you moved.
- Press plastic clips back in by hand; if needed, use the flat-blade screwdriver (small) to align the center pin before pressing it flush.
- Repeat the same steps on the other side so both bulbs match in color and brightness.
âś… After Repair
- Verify left and right turn signals flash at a normal speed (fast flashing can mean a bulb isn’t seated).
- Turn on hazard lights and walk around the car to confirm both front signals work.
- Make sure any clips/ducts you touched are secure and not rubbing a belt or fan.
