š§ Prius - Front Turn Signal Bulb Replacement
This job replaces the front turn signal bulbs inside the front bumper/headlamp area. On your Prius, the easiest access is usually through the front wheel-well liner, so you can reach the bulb socket without removing the bumper.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
Assumption: your Prius uses replaceable front turn-signal bulbs (not an LED module).
ā ļø Safety & Precautions
- ā ļø Turn the car OFF and keep the smart key 15+ feet away so lights canāt switch on unexpectedly.
- ā ļø Let the headlamp/turn-signal area cool if recently used; bulbs and housings can be hot.
- ā ļø Support the car on jack stands if you lift itānever rely on a floor jack alone.
- ā ļø Do not touch the new bulb glass with bare fingers; skin oils can shorten bulb life.
- ā ļø No high-voltage hybrid service is required for this repair.

Step 1: Safely raise the front corner (optional but recommended)
- Use a floor jack to lift the front corner youāre working on.
- Place jack stands under a solid lift/support point and lower the car onto the stands.
Step 2: Remove the front wheel (optional, for more room)
- Remove the lug nuts using a 21mm socket and ratchet, then remove the wheel.
- Set the wheel aside so it canāt roll away.
Step 3: Open the wheel-well access to reach the turn signal socket
- In the front part of the wheel well, remove the plastic clips/screws holding the liner using a trim clip removal tool and Phillips screwdriver #2.
- Peel the liner back just enough to reach your hand behind the bumper/headlamp area.
- Tip: Donāt fully remove the liner.
Step 4: Find the front turn signal bulb socket
- Use a flashlight and look for the turn signal bulb socket (a small twist-lock socket going into the lamp housing).
- Grip the socket and rotate it about a quarter-turn to unlock.
- Pull the socket straight out.
Step 5: Replace the bulb
- Wear nitrile gloves so you donāt touch the bulb glass.
- Remove the old bulb by pulling it straight out of the socket.
- Push the new front turn signal bulb (amber 7440 / equivalent) straight into the socket until fully seated.
Step 6: Test the turn signal before reassembly
- Reinsert the socket into the housing and twist to lock by hand (snug only).
- Turn the car to ON (Ready not required), then switch the turn signal on.
- If it doesnāt work, turn the car OFF and recheck that the bulb is fully seated.
Step 7: Reinstall the wheel-well liner
- Reposition the liner.
- Reinstall all clips/screws using a trim clip removal tool (to hold/align clips) and Phillips screwdriver #2.
Step 8: Reinstall the wheel and torque lug nuts
- Install the wheel and hand-thread the lug nuts.
- Snug the lug nuts in a star pattern using a 21mm socket and ratchet.
- Lower the car off the jack stands using the floor jack.
- Tighten lug nuts with a torque wrench: Torque to 103 Nm (76 ft-lb).
Step 9: Repeat on the other side
- Repeat the same process for the other front turn signal so both bulbs match in color and brightness.
ā After Repair
- Verify left and right turn signals flash normally (not fast).
- Turn on hazards and walk around the car to confirm both front signals are bright and amber.
- Make sure the wheel-well liner is secured so it canāt rub the tire.
