šŸ”§ Optima - Front Turn Signal Bulb Replacement

You’ll be removing the old front turn signal bulb from the back of the headlamp housing and installing a new one. This fixes a burned-out bulb, a fast-blinking turn signal, or a dim/incorrect-color signal.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

Assumption: your Optima uses an amber front turn-signal bulb (common fitment).

āš ļø Safety & Precautions

  • āš ļø Turn the car OFF and remove the key/fob from the car.
  • āš ļø Let the headlamp area cool if lights were on (hot plastic/bulb can burn you).
  • āš ļø Don’t touch the glass of the new bulb with bare fingers (skin oils can shorten bulb life).
  • āš ļø Hybrid note: This job is low-voltage only; no high-voltage service is required.
  • āš ļø Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.

šŸ”§ Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Flashlight
  • 10mm socket
  • 1/4" ratchet
  • 6" extension
  • Phillips #2 screwdriver
  • Trim clip remover tool

šŸ”© Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Front turn signal bulb (amber) - Qty: 1
  • Front turn signal bulb (amber) - Qty: 1 Replace in pairs (recommended)

šŸ“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Make sure all exterior lights are switched OFF.
  • Open the hood and have your flashlight ready so you can see behind the headlamp.

šŸ”Ø Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Confirm which front turn signal is out

  • Turn the ignition to ON (engine not required) and test the left and right turn signals.
  • Turn the ignition back OFF and remove the key/fob.

Step 2: Access the back of the headlamp

  • Open the hood and look behind the headlamp assembly on the side you’re replacing.
  • If your hands don’t fit, remove the closest intake snorkel/cover using a 10mm socket with a 1/4" ratchet and 6" extension.
  • If there are plastic push-clips, pop them out using a trim clip remover tool. Pull the center pin up first.

Step 3: Remove the turn signal bulb socket

  • Find the turn signal socket at the rear of the headlamp (it’s the socket that twists out).
  • Grip the socket and rotate it counterclockwise about 1/4 turn, then pull it straight out.

Step 4: Remove the old bulb

  • Pull the bulb straight out of the socket.
  • If it’s stuck, wiggle gently while pulling—don’t crush the glass.

Step 5: Install the new bulb

  • Put on nitrile gloves so you don’t touch the bulb glass.
  • Push the new bulb straight into the socket until fully seated.
  • If you touched the glass, wipe with rubbing alcohol and let dry.

Step 6: Reinstall the socket and any removed parts

  • Insert the socket back into the headlamp and rotate clockwise to lock.
  • Reinstall any covers/ducting you removed using a 10mm socket and 1/4" ratchet.
  • If you removed screws, reinstall with a Phillips #2 screwdriver.
  • For any small 10mm bolts removed: Torque to 7-9 Nm (5-7 ft-lbs).

Step 7: Repeat on the other side (recommended)

  • Replace the other front turn signal bulb the same way so color/brightness match.

āœ… After Repair

  • Turn ignition ON and test left/right turn signals and hazards.
  • Verify the turn signal flashes at a normal speed (fast flashing can mean the wrong bulb type or another bulb is out).
  • At night, confirm the bulb is amber and bright from the front.

šŸ’° DIY vs Shop Cost
