🔧 Tacoma - Front Turn Signal Bulb Replacement

Your Tacoma’s front turn signal bulbs sit in the headlamp assembly. You’ll access the bulb sockets from behind the headlight, swap the bulbs, then test the signals to make sure everything flashes correctly.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.3-0.7 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key before starting.
  • ⚠️ Let the headlight area cool if the lights were recently on.
  • ⚠️ Don’t force plastic sockets—twist gently to avoid cracking.
  • ⚠️ Avoid touching the new bulb’s glass (skin oils can shorten bulb life).

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Flashlight

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Front turn signal bulb (amber, 7440A) - Qty: 2 Replace in pairs

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Turn the headlight switch to OFF and make sure the turn signal stalk is centered.
  • Open the hood and use a flashlight so you can see behind the headlamp.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Locate the front turn signal socket

  • Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
  • Use a flashlight and look behind the headlight assembly on the side you’re replacing.
  • Find the turn signal bulb socket (it’s a twist-lock socket going into the back of the headlamp housing).

Step 2: Remove the bulb socket from the headlamp

  • Grip the socket firmly by hand (use nitrile gloves for better grip).
  • Turn the socket counterclockwise about a quarter-turn until it unlocks.
  • Pull the socket straight back to remove it from the headlamp.

Step 3: Remove the old bulb

  • Hold the socket in one hand.
  • Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket by hand. No twisting needed

Step 4: Install the new bulb

  • With nitrile gloves on, push the new 7440A amber bulb straight into the socket until it seats fully.
  • If you accidentally touch the glass, wipe it clean and dry (still wearing nitrile gloves).

Step 5: Reinstall the socket

  • Insert the socket back into the headlamp opening in the same orientation it came out.
  • Turn the socket clockwise about a quarter-turn by hand until it locks.
  • Make sure it feels snug and doesn’t wobble.

Step 6: Repeat on the other side (recommended)

  • Use the same steps to replace the other front turn signal bulb. Matching brightness looks better

âś… After Repair

  • Turn the ignition ON and test left and right turn signals.
  • Turn on the hazard lights and confirm both front turn signals flash evenly.
  • If one side “hyper-flashes” (very fast), recheck that the bulb is fully seated and the socket is locked.
