🔧 Suburban - Front Turn Signal Bulb Replacement

The front turn signal bulb on your Suburban sits inside the headlamp assembly and can be replaced from behind the light. You’ll remove the bulb socket, swap the bulb, and test the turn signal and hazards.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the ignition OFF and switch all lights OFF before starting.
  • ⚠️ Let the bulb cool if it was just on (it can be hot).
  • ⚠️ Wear gloves and don’t touch the bulb glass with bare fingers (skin oils can shorten bulb life).
  • ⚠️ Support the hood securely and keep loose clothing away from the cooling fan area.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Flashlight
  • 1/4" ratchet
  • 8mm socket
  • 10mm socket
  • Flat-blade screwdriver

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Front turn signal/parking light bulb (amber, 3157A/3157NA) - Qty: 2

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and shift to Park.
  • Turn the headlight switch OFF and remove the key.
  • Open the hood and set your flashlight so you can see behind the headlamp assembly.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Find the correct bulb socket

  • Stand at the front of your Suburban with the hood open.
  • Look behind the headlamp assembly and locate the turn signal/parking bulb socket (it’s usually the larger twist-lock socket toward the inboard/lower area).
  • Use a flashlight to confirm you’re on the turn/park bulb (not the low beam or high beam socket).

Step 2: Make room (only if access is tight)

  • If your hand won’t fit, gently move the nearby ducting or filler neck out of the way.
  • Use a flat-blade screwdriver to loosen an intake clamp if needed.
  • Use an 8mm socket or 10mm socket with a 1/4" ratchet to remove a small bolt holding a bracket or cover if one is blocking access.
  • Only remove what you must to reach the socket.

Step 3: Remove the turn signal bulb socket

  • Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
  • Grip the socket firmly and rotate it counterclockwise about a quarter turn.
  • Pull the socket straight out of the headlamp assembly.

Step 4: Replace the bulb

  • Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket (it’s a push-in style).
  • Push the new 3157A/3157NA amber bulb straight into the socket until fully seated.
  • If you accidentally touch the glass, wipe it clean with a dry lint-free cloth before installing.

Step 5: Reinstall the socket

  • Insert the socket back into the headlamp housing, making sure it sits flush.
  • Twist clockwise until it locks in place.
  • Reinstall anything you loosened/removed using the 8mm socket or 10mm socket and 1/4" ratchet.

Step 6: Repeat on the other side

  • Repeat Steps 1-5 for the other front turn signal bulb.
  • Replace bulbs in pairs for matching brightness.

✅ After Repair

  • Turn the ignition to ON and test left and right turn signals.
  • Turn on hazard lights and confirm both front signals blink evenly.
  • If the turn signal blinks fast, recheck the bulb seating and confirm you installed the correct amber bulb type.
