🔧 Altima - Front Turn Signal Bulb Replacement
Your Altima’s front turn signal bulb sits inside the headlamp housing. The job is mostly about getting access to the bulb socket, swapping the bulb without touching the glass, and confirming the new bulb flashes normally (not fast).
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 20-45 minutes
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the lights OFF and remove the key before starting.
- ⚠️ Let the headlamp area cool if lights were recently on.
- ⚠️ If you lift the car or remove a wheel, use jack stands on solid ground—never rely on a jack alone.
- ⚠️ Don’t touch the new bulb’s glass with bare fingers (skin oil can shorten bulb life).
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Safety glasses
- Nitrile gloves
- Flashlight
- Trim clip removal tool
- Small flat-blade screwdriver
- Floor jack (rated 2-ton minimum)
- Jack stands (rated 2-ton minimum)
- 21mm socket
- Breaker bar
- Torque wrench (10-150 ft-lb range)

đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and turn the steering wheel toward the side you’re working on (gives more room in the wheel well).
- Decide your access method: easiest is usually through the front wheel-well access flap/liner.
- If you choose to remove the wheel for more space, loosen lug nuts slightly before lifting the car.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Confirm the correct bulb
- Use nitrile gloves and a flashlight to look behind the headlamp area.
- Plan to match the replacement to the bulb number printed on the old bulb (this avoids buying the wrong type).
Step 2: Create access (wheel-well method)
- Turn the steering wheel fully away from the side you’re working on (more hand room).
- Use a trim clip removal tool (a forked tool that pops plastic clips out) to remove the plastic clips holding the small front section of the fender liner/access flap.
- If a clip is stubborn, gently help it with a small flat-blade screwdriver—don’t force it or it can snap.
- Pull the liner/flap back by hand to expose the rear of the headlamp housing.
Step 3: Remove the turn signal bulb socket
- Use a flashlight to find the turn signal socket on the back of the headlamp (it’s the socket that feeds the turn/park bulb).
- Grip the socket firmly and rotate it counterclockwise about 1/4 turn by hand (use nitrile gloves for better grip), then pull it straight out.
Step 4: Replace the bulb
- Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket by hand (use nitrile gloves).
- Install the new bulb into the socket by pushing it straight in until fully seated.
- Don’t touch the glass—hold the base.
Step 5: Reinstall the socket and test
- Insert the socket back into the headlamp and twist clockwise by hand until it locks.
- Turn the ignition to ON and test the turn signal and hazards. Use a flashlight to confirm the bulb is lit and flashing.
- If it doesn’t work, turn everything OFF, remove the socket again, and re-seat the bulb and socket.
Step 6: Reinstall liner/clips (and wheel if removed)
- Reposition the liner/access flap and reinstall the clips using the trim clip removal tool (press clips in until snug).
- If you removed the wheel: install lug nuts by hand, lower the car using the floor jack, then use a torque wrench with a 21mm socket to tighten in a star pattern: Torque to 113 N·m (83 ft-lb).
âś… After Repair
- Verify both front turn signals flash at a normal speed and the dash indicator behaves normally.
- If the signal flashes fast, one of the turn bulbs is still out (front or rear) or the wrong bulb type is installed—recheck all corners.
- Make sure the fender liner is secured so it can’t rub the tire.
