🔧 Sonata - Front Turn Signal Bulb Replacement

You’ll access the back of the headlamp housing from the engine bay, remove the turn-signal bulb socket, and swap in a new bulb. This restores proper signaling and helps you stay legal and visible.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.3-0.6 hours

Assumption: access is from the engine bay (no bumper removal).

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the lights OFF and let the headlamp area cool before touching bulbs (they get hot).
  • ⚠️ Avoid touching the glass of the new bulb with bare fingers; skin oil can shorten bulb life.
  • ⚠️ Keep keys out of the car so lights can’t be turned on accidentally.
  • Battery disconnect is not required for this bulb swap.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Small flat trim tool
  • Flashlight

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Front turn signal bulb (amber, OEM-equivalent) - Qty: 1
  • Front turn signal bulb (amber, OEM-equivalent) - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Turn the headlight/turn signal switch OFF and remove the key/fob from the vehicle.
  • Open the hood and use a flashlight to locate the back of each headlamp.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Verify which bulb is out

  • Turn the ignition to ON and test left and right signals quickly, then turn ignition back OFF.
  • Fast blinking usually means a bulb is out.

Step 2: Access the back of the headlamp

  • Open the hood and look behind the headlamp assembly on the side you’re fixing.
  • If an air guide/cover is in the way, gently release its clips using a small flat trim tool.

Step 3: Remove the turn-signal bulb socket

  • Find the socket going into the headlamp housing for the turn signal (it’s one of the larger twist-lock sockets).
  • Grip the socket and rotate it counterclockwise about 1/4 turn, then pull it straight out.
  • If it’s tight, use nitrile gloves for grip; do not force the wiring.

Step 4: Remove the old bulb

  • Pull the bulb straight out of the socket.
  • If it’s a twist-in style on your socket, rotate the bulb slightly counterclockwise and remove it.
  • Compare old and new bulb bases before installing.

Step 5: Install the new bulb

  • Put on nitrile gloves so you don’t touch the bulb glass.
  • Push the new bulb fully into the socket (or twist to lock if your socket uses that style).

Step 6: Reinstall the socket into the headlamp

  • Insert the socket back into the headlamp opening.
  • Rotate clockwise about 1/4 turn until it locks and sits flush.
  • Reinstall any clips/covers you removed using the small flat trim tool.

Step 7: Test operation

  • Turn ignition ON and test the turn signal, hazard lights, and (if shared) parking light function.
  • If it doesn’t work, remove the socket and confirm the bulb is fully seated.

✅ After Repair

  • Confirm both left and right turn signals blink at a normal speed.
  • Check the bulb is amber and the lens area is clean and dry.
  • Make sure any covers/clips you moved are secured so nothing rattles.
