🔧 Highlander - Front Turn Signal Replacement

On your XSE, the front turn signals are usually LED units built into the headlight, not simple plug‑in bulbs. That means you normally replace the whole headlight assembly if the front turn signal fails. Below I’ll show you both options: how to confirm if you have LED (assembly replacement) and, for the rare halogen version, how a bulb change would work.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate/Advanced | Estimated Time: 1.5–3 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Always work on a cool engine; plastic clips and wiring can be damaged by heat.
  • ⚠️ Disconnect the negative battery terminal before unplugging headlight connectors to avoid shorts.
  • ⚠️ Use proper support for the hood; don’t rely only on the hood strut if you lean into the bay.
  • ⚠️ Be gentle with plastic bumper clips—they break easily if forced.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 🔹10mm socket
  • 🔹12mm socket

  • 🔹Torque wrench 3/8" drive (5–30 ft-lb range)
  • 🔹Needle-nose pliers
  • 🔹Work light or headlamp
  • 🔹Fender covers or clean towels
  • 🔹Mechanic gloves
  • 🔹Safety glasses

  • 🔹Front headlight assembly (right) - Qty: 1 (only if LED unit failed on passenger side)
  • 🔹Front turn signal bulb (amber, wedge/halogen type) - Qty: 1–2 (only if your Highlander uses replaceable bulbs)
  • 🔹Front bumper cover push clips - Qty: 6–10 (to replace any broken clips)
  • 🔹Dielectric grease for electrical connectors - Qty: 1
  • 🔹Touch-up paint (optional) - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park the Highlander on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Turn off all lights and remove the key or shut off the start button.
  • Open the hood and support it fully.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm socket and move it aside so it cannot spring back.
  • Have small containers ready for bolts and clips.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Confirm if your front turn signal is LED or bulb

  • With the battery still connected briefly, turn the hazard lights on and walk to the front of the Highlander.
  • If the turn signal area in the headlight is a smooth, solid light strip with no visible “bulb shape”, it is an LED module. On XSE, this is the usual setup and is part of the headlight assembly.
  • If you see a distinct, round or wedge-shaped bulb behind a small reflector section, you likely have a replaceable bulb.
  • Turn off the hazards and disconnect the negative battery terminal with a 10mm socket now.

Step 2: Access method choice

  • If yours is LED integrated (most XSE): follow the steps labeled “LED Assembly Path”.
  • If yours has a separate bulb: follow the steps labeled “Bulb-Only Path”.
  • Read through your chosen path once before starting.

LED Assembly Path – Step 3: Remove upper grille and bumper fasteners

  • Open the hood and locate the plastic push clips along the top of the grille/bumper cover.
  • Use the trim clip removal tool to gently lift the center pins, then pull the clips out.
  • Place clips in a container; you may replace any that feel loose.

LED Assembly Path – Step 4: Loosen front bumper sides

  • Turn the front wheels to one side to access the inner fender area.
  • Use a Phillips #2 screwdriver to remove any screws securing the bumper to the fender liner on that side.
  • Use the trim clip removal tool to pop any plastic clips along the fender liner edge.
  • Repeat on the other side.
  • Gently pull outward on the bumper corner near the headlight. It will “pop” off small retaining tabs—do this slowly to avoid cracking tabs.

LED Assembly Path – Step 5: Remove lower bumper fasteners

  • Get down in front of the Highlander; use the trim clip removal tool to remove the plastic clips and any screws under the front bumper lip.
  • Support the bumper with your knee or a box so it doesn’t hang by the wiring.

LED Assembly Path – Step 6: Partially remove bumper cover

  • With a helper if possible, pull the bumper cover forward slightly from the front of the vehicle.
  • Reach behind the cover and disconnect any fog light or sensor connectors by hand or with needle-nose pliers if the tab is stiff.
  • Set the bumper cover aside on a soft surface (towels) to avoid scratches.

LED Assembly Path – Step 7: Remove the headlight assembly

  • Locate the headlight mounting bolts on top and at the front/side of the unit.
  • Use a 10mm socket with ratchet and extension to remove all visible headlight bolts. Keep track of their locations.
  • Gently pull the headlight assembly forward; there may be a locating pin at the rear that needs a small wiggle to release.
  • Once free, disconnect the large electrical connector at the rear of the headlight by pressing the tab and pulling straight back.

LED Assembly Path – Step 8: Install the new headlight assembly

  • Apply a small amount of dielectric grease to the main connector pins if available.
  • Reconnect the headlight connector firmly until it clicks.
  • Position the new headlight assembly, making sure the rear locating pin seats into its hole.
  • Install the headlight bolts using the 10mm socket and ratchet.
  • Tighten the headlight bolts to 5–7 Nm (4–5 ft-lb) – just snug; do not over-tighten as the tabs are plastic.

LED Assembly Path – Step 9: Reinstall the bumper cover

  • Lift the bumper cover back into place with a helper.
  • Reconnect any fog light and sensor connectors by hand.
  • Engage the side tabs at each fender by pushing the bumper corner in until you feel it click.
  • Reinstall lower clips and screws using the trim clip removal tool and Phillips #2 screwdriver.
  • Reinstall upper clips along the grille with the trim clip removal tool, pressing center pins down to lock.

Bulb-Only Path – Step 3: Access the rear of the headlight

  • Open the hood and look behind the headlight on the side you’re changing.
  • You may need to move a small rubber cover or plastic shield—remove any 10mm bolts with a 10mm socket if necessary.
  • Find the turn signal bulb socket: it’s usually a small, round plastic holder with wires going into it, positioned near the outer front corner of the headlight.

Bulb-Only Path – Step 4: Remove the old bulb

  • Grasp the bulb socket and twist it counterclockwise about a quarter turn.
  • Pull the socket straight out from the headlight housing.
  • Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket by hand; if tight, gently wiggle while pulling.

Bulb-Only Path – Step 5: Install the new bulb

  • Handle the new bulb only by its base; avoid touching the glass with bare fingers. If you do, wipe it with a clean tissue.
  • Insert the new bulb into the socket until it clicks or feels firmly seated.
  • Apply a thin smear of dielectric grease on the bulb’s base contacts if available.
  • Align the socket tabs with the headlight opening, insert it, and twist clockwise until it locks.

Step 10: Reconnect the battery and test

  • Reconnect the negative battery terminal using a 10mm socket and tighten it securely.
  • Tighten the battery terminal nut to 5–7 Nm (4–5 ft-lb) – snug, not overly tight.
  • Turn on the hazards and check the front turn signal on the repaired side.
  • Also check parking lights, low beams, and high beams to be sure everything works.

Step 11: Final alignment check (LED assembly path)

  • Park about 3–4 meters from a wall at night.
  • Turn on low beams and compare height and aim of the new headlight to the other side.
  • If aiming is off, use the headlight adjuster screw (usually accessible from above) with a Phillips #2 screwdriver to match the beam heights.

✅ After Repair

  • 🚗 Test both front and rear turn signals with hazards and turn stalk.
  • 🔍 Drive forward a short distance and check that there are no warning lights on the dash related to lights.
  • 🧽 Wipe fingerprints and smudges off the headlight lenses and bumper.
  • 🔄 Recheck all bumper edges to ensure they are fully clipped and flush with the fenders.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $450–$900 per side for LED assembly replacement, or $80–$150 for a simple bulb replacement (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $15–$30 for bulbs, or $250–$500 per LED headlight assembly (parts only)

You Save: About $50–$100 on a bulb job, or $200–$400 per side on an LED assembly job by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100–$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.5 hours for a bulb and 1.5–2.0 hours for an LED headlight assembly.
