🔧 Grand Cherokee - Shock Absorber Replacement

On your Grand Cherokee, the steps and torque specs depend on whether you’re replacing the front (strut assembly) or the rear (shock), and whether your Trailhawk has Quadra-Lift air suspension. If we use the wrong procedure, you can damage suspension parts or trigger ride-height faults.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2-6 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • 🛑 Never work under the vehicle supported only by a jack; always use jack stands.
  • 🛑 Suspension parts can be under load; support the control arm/axle before removing shock/strut bolts.
  • 🛑 If equipped with Quadra-Lift, do not let the suspension hang unsupported and do not open air lines without the correct depressurize procedure.
  • 🛑 If you’ll be near ABS/wheel-speed wiring, don’t stretch or pinch harnesses.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks
  • Safety glasses
  • Mechanic gloves
  • Breaker bar 1/2"
  • Torque wrench 1/2" (20-250 ft-lbs range)
  • Socket set 3/8" drive (8mm-21mm)
  • Socket set 1/2" drive (13mm-24mm)
  • Wrench set (10mm-24mm)
  • Trim clip tool
  • Flathead screwdriver
  • Penetrating oil
  • Pry bar
  • Spring compressor (specialty)

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and place wheel chocks at the tires staying on the ground.
  • Loosen lug nuts slightly before lifting (use a breaker bar 1/2" and correct lug socket).
  • Quick check: Look for a ride-height selector in the cabin (Quadra-Lift). If you have it, tell me.
  • Two quick questions so I can give you the exact OEM procedure + torque specs: Are you replacing front struts, rear shocks, or all four? And do you have Quadra-Lift air suspension?

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Confirm the correct procedure path

  • Reply with: Front / Rear / All and Quadra-Lift: Yes/No.
  • Once confirmed, I’ll provide the exact step sequence and factory torque specs for your Grand Cherokee.
  • Front “struts” need a spring compressor.

Step 2: If you must prep the vehicle now (safe universal prep)

  • Use wheel chocks to secure the opposite end from the one you’re lifting.
  • Use a breaker bar 1/2" to loosen lug nuts 1/4 turn.
  • Lift at the approved jacking point using a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum), then set on jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum).
  • Remove the wheel using the correct socket from your socket set 1/2" drive (13mm-24mm).

âś… After Repair

  • Verify all fasteners are tightened with a torque wrench 1/2" (20-250 ft-lbs range) to the correct factory specs (I’ll give these once you confirm front/rear and Quadra-Lift).
  • Do a slow test drive over small bumps; listen for clunks and recheck lug nut torque.
  • If the front struts were replaced, get a 4-wheel alignment as soon as possible.

đź’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $700-$1,800 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $250-$1,200 (parts only)

You Save: $450-$600+ by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 2-6 hours.
