- Loosen the front lug bolts slightly before lifting the car.
- Replace struts in pairs.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Lift and secure the front of the car
- Use a floor jack to lift the front of the Golf at the proper lift point.
- Support it with jack stands under the approved pinch weld or support points.
- Remove both front wheels with a 17mm socket.
Step 2: Disconnect the strut attachments
- Use a 13mm socket, 16mm socket, or the correct Torx bit to remove the brake hose bracket and any ABS wire brackets attached to the strut.
- Use a hex bit or triple-square bit if your sway bar link fastener is that style, and disconnect the sway bar end link from the strut.
- Support the knuckle so it does not drop.
Step 3: Separate the strut from the steering knuckle
- Spray the lower strut bolts with penetrating oil.
- Use the correct socket and breaker bar to remove the lower strut-to-knuckle bolts.
- Mark the original position with a paint marker before removing the bolts.
- Use a pry bar if needed to open the knuckle slightly and free the strut.
Step 4: Remove the top strut mount nuts
- Open the hood and locate the top of the strut tower.
- Use a 13mm socket to remove the upper strut mount nuts.
- Hold the strut from below as you remove the last nut so it does not drop.
Step 5: Remove the strut assembly
- Lower the complete strut assembly out of the wheel well.
- If reusing the spring, mount the strut in a spring compressor (specialty) and compress the spring evenly.
- Use the correct socket and hex bit to remove the top nut from the strut shaft.
- Transfer the spring, mount, bearing, boot, and bump stop to the new strut if needed.
Step 6: Install the new strut assembly
- Install the assembled strut into the strut tower by hand first.
- Start the upper mount nuts with a 13mm socket, but do not fully tighten yet.
- Align the lower strut with the steering knuckle.
- Install the lower strut bolts and nuts by hand first.
Step 7: Tighten all fasteners
- Use a torque wrench to tighten the lower strut-to-knuckle bolts.
- Torque to 70 Nm (52 ft-lbs) plus 90° unless your replacement hardware specifies a different value.
- Use a torque wrench to tighten the upper strut mount nuts.
- Torque to 20 Nm (15 ft-lbs).
- Reattach the sway bar link and bracket hardware with the correct tool and torque those fasteners to spec.
Step 8: Reassemble and repeat on the other side
- Reinstall the brake hose bracket and ABS wire clips using the correct socket or Torx bit.
- Repeat the full procedure on the opposite side.
- Install the wheels and tighten the lug bolts with a 17mm socket.
- Torque to 120 Nm (89 ft-lbs).

- Lower the car, pump the brake pedal if needed, and verify the suspension sits evenly.
- Turn the steering wheel lock to lock and check for rubbing or clunks.
- Test drive slowly at first and listen for loose hardware.
- Get a professional front-end alignment as soon as possible.
