- The front coil spring is under heavy pressure. Use only a complete replacement strut assembly unless you have proper spring-compressor equipment and experience.
- Do not let the brake hose or ABS wire hang by their weight.
- Have an alignment checked after the repair. Front strut work changes alignment.
- Disconnect the negative battery terminal only if you need extra safety around ABS wiring; it is not normally required for this job.

📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Leave the transmission in Park and chock the rear wheels.
- Loosen the front lug nuts before lifting the truck.
- Work on one side at a time so the other side can act as a reference.
- Marking bolt positions helps during reassembly.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Loosen the front wheel
- Use a 21mm lug socket and breaker bar to loosen the front lug nuts on both sides, but do not remove them yet.
Step 2: Raise and support the truck
- Use a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) to lift the front end.
- Place jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum) under the frame and lower the truck onto them.
- Remove the front wheels with the 21mm lug socket.
Step 3: Disconnect the stabilizer link from the strut
- Use a 14mm socket and a wrench or a second socket on the stud if it spins.
- Remove the sway bar end link nut from the strut bracket.
- Move the link aside so it is not under tension.
- Penetrating oil helps on rusty fasteners.
Step 4: Free the brake hose and ABS wire brackets
- Use a 10mm socket to remove the small bracket bolts from the strut.
- Set the hose and wire aside carefully. Do not stretch them.
Step 5: Mark the lower strut bolt position
- Use a paint marker to mark the relationship between the lower strut mounting bolts and the knuckle.
- This gives you a starting point for reassembly and helps keep alignment closer to where it was.
Step 6: Remove the lower strut bolts
- Use a 19mm socket and breaker bar to remove the two lower strut-to-knuckle bolts and nuts.
- Support the knuckle with one hand as the last bolt comes out.
- If the bolts are tight, use penetrating oil and work them back and forth.
Step 7: Remove the top strut nuts
- Open the hood.
- Use a 14mm socket to remove the three upper strut mount nuts.
- Hold the strut assembly with your other hand while removing the last nut so it does not drop.
Step 8: Remove the strut assembly
- Pull the complete strut assembly out through the wheel well.
- Use a pry bar only if the lower bracket is stuck in the knuckle.
Step 9: Install the new strut assembly
- Position the new strut in the wheel well.
- Start the three upper mounting nuts by hand first, using the old nuts only if the new assembly did not come with hardware.
- Install the lower strut-to-knuckle bolts with the 19mm socket but leave them loose for now.
- Reconnect the brake hose bracket and ABS wire bracket with the 10mm socket.
- Reconnect the stabilizer link to the strut bracket with the 14mm socket.
Step 10: Tighten everything to specification
- Use a torque wrench to tighten the upper strut mount nuts to 54 Nm (40 ft-lbs).
- Tighten the lower strut-to-knuckle bolts to 280 Nm (206 ft-lbs).
- Tighten the stabilizer link nut to 55 Nm (41 ft-lbs).
- Tighten the brake hose and ABS wire bracket bolts to 9 Nm (80 in-lbs).
- Final torque matters most on suspension parts.
Step 11: Reinstall the wheel
- Put the wheel back on and hand-tighten the lug nuts.
- Lower the truck until the tire just touches the ground.
- Use the 21mm lug socket and torque wrench to tighten the lug nuts to 113 Nm (83 ft-lbs) in a star pattern.
Step 12: Repeat on the other side
- Repeat the same steps on the opposite side.
- Replace struts in pairs so the ride stays balanced.
✅ After Repair
- Start the truck and turn the steering wheel lock-to-lock to check for rubbing or noises.
- Look behind both front wheels to confirm the brake hose and ABS wire are routed correctly.
- Test drive slowly first, then listen for clunks over bumps.
- Schedule a front-end alignment as soon as possible.
- If you changed both sides, the truck should feel more stable and controlled.
