1500 - Front Strut Replacement 🛠️
Below is a beginner-friendly guide for replacing the front strut assemblies on your 1500. If you meant rear shocks instead, tell me and I’ll adjust.
Safety First ⚠️
- 🧯 Work on level ground and set the parking brake.
- 🧱 Use jack stands, never rely on the jack alone.
- 🧤 Wear safety glasses and gloves.
- 🔌 Keep the key out of the ignition while the truck is in the air.
Parts You’ll Need 📦
- 🛞 Complete front strut assemblies (left + right) These include spring, mount, and shock pre-assembled – best for beginners.
- 🪛 New upper strut nuts (recommended)
- 🪛 New lower strut bolt/nut if old ones are rusty or damaged
Tools You’ll Need 🔧
- 🧰 Floor jack – to lift the truck.
- 🧱 Jack stands – to safely support the truck.
- 🔩 Socket set (metric):
- Common sizes used: 10mm, 13mm, 18mm, 21mm, 24mm
- 🔧 Combination wrenches (metric) – same sizes as sockets.
- 📏 Breaker bar – long-handled bar to loosen tight bolts.
- 🔨 Rubber mallet or small hammer – to tap bolts free.
- 🧴 Penetrating oil (like WD-40) – helps loosen rusty bolts.
- 📐 Pry bar – metal bar to gently move suspension parts.
- 🧷 Torque wrench – tool that tightens bolts to exact spec.
Key Torque Specs (Front) 📏
- 🧷 Upper strut mount nuts (3 small nuts): ~ 40 ft-lb
- 🧷 Lower strut-to-knuckle bolt: ~ 125 ft-lb
- 🧷 Sway bar link nut (if removed): ~ 75 ft-lb
These are typical values for your generation 1500; if you have a torque chart handy, follow it.
Prep Steps 🚗
- 🧰 Loosen front wheel lug nuts (21mm) about one turn while the truck is on the ground.
- 🧱 Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
- 🧰 Jack up the front of the truck at the front crossmember and place jack stands under the frame rails on both sides.
- 🛞 Remove both front wheels.
Remove Old Front Strut (One Side at a Time) 🔧
Do one side completely, then the other. This keeps things more stable.
- 🧴 Spray penetrating oil on:
- Lower strut bolt (where strut meets steering knuckle)
- Upper strut mount nuts (under the hood)
- Sway bar link nut (if it attaches to the strut)
- 🧷 Support the lower control arm
- Place the floor jack under the lower control arm (the big arm under the strut) and lift just enough to take some weight off the suspension.
- 🔌 Disconnect any brackets from the strut
- If there are brake hose or ABS wire brackets bolted to the strut, remove their small bolts (usually 10mm) and move the lines aside.
- 🔩 Remove sway bar link from the strut (if attached)
- Use a wrench on the back side and a socket on the nut (often 18mm).
- If the stud spins, hold the stud with an internal hex (Allen) or Torx bit while turning the nut.
- 🔩 Remove the lower strut bolt
- Use a 21–24mm socket and breaker bar on the nut/bolt.
- Once the nut is off, tap the bolt out with a hammer if needed. Don’t mushroom the threads; tap gently.
- 🧰 Under the hood – loosen upper strut nuts
- Open the hood and locate the three small nuts around the top of the strut tower (do NOT remove the big center nut).
- Loosen all three, then remove two of them fully, leaving one nut threaded on a few turns to hold the strut.
- 🧷 Remove the last upper nut and drop the strut
- Support the strut from below with one hand.
- Remove the last upper nut and carefully lower the strut out of the wheel well.
Install New Front Strut Assembly ✅
- 🧭 Check orientation
- Compare the new strut to the old one:
- Spring end position
- Bracket locations (for brake hose/ABS)
- Upper mount stud pattern
- Compare the new strut to the old one:
- 🧰 Position the new strut
- Feed the new strut up into the wheel well.
- Guide the top studs through the holes in the strut tower.
- Thread the three upper nuts on by hand (just snug, not tight yet).
- 🔩 Install the lower strut bolt
- Align the bottom of the strut with the steering knuckle.
- You may need to raise or lower the jack under the lower control arm to line up the holes.
- Slide the bolt through and install the nut by hand.
- 🧷 Tighten lower strut bolt to spec
- Use your torque wrench to tighten to about 125 ft-lb.
- 🔩 Reattach sway bar link
- Install the sway bar link stud into the strut bracket.
- Tighten the nut to about 75 ft-lb.
- 🔌 Reattach brake hose / ABS brackets
- Install the small bolts and snug them down (just firm, not crazy tight).
- 🧷 Tighten upper strut mount nuts
- Under the hood, torque the three upper nuts evenly to about 40 ft-lb.
Repeat on the Other Side 🔁
- 🔁 Do the exact same steps on the other front strut.
Reinstall Wheels & Final Checks 🚙
- 🛞 Reinstall front wheels and hand-tighten lug nuts.
- 🧰 Lower the truck off the jack stands carefully.
- 🔧 Torque lug nuts in a star pattern to about 130 ft-lb.
- 🚗 Take a short, gentle test drive. Listen for clunks or odd noises.
Important: Get an Alignment 📐
- 📏 After front strut replacement, a 4-wheel alignment is strongly recommended to prevent tire wear and pulling.
Rear “Struts” Note 🔍
Your 1500 uses rear shocks, not true rear struts. If you also want to replace the rear shocks, I can give you a shorter, easier guide for those too.
HowToo makes it easy: below this answer you’ll see recommended complete strut assemblies, bolts, and all the tools (jack, stands, torque wrench, sockets). You can add them to your cart right from the parts section for fast shipping.
If you tell me whether you’re doing front only, rear only, or all four corners, I can tailor the steps even more.
