🔧 Front Strut Assembly - Replacement

Assumption: this is for the front strut assemblies on your Sierra. Front struts are loaded with spring tension, so the job needs careful disassembly and the right spring compressor to do it safely. If the noise or ride issue is coming from one corner, replace struts in pairs on the same axle.

Difficulty Level: Advanced | Estimated Time: 3-5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Use a spring compressor only on a stable, undamaged strut spring. A spring compressor is a tool that safely squeezes the coil spring so the strut can be taken apart.
  • Support the vehicle securely with jack stands. Never work under a truck held only by a jack.
  • Keep hands and face away from the spring while compressing or releasing it.
  • If your Sierra has a wheel speed sensor wire or brake hose clipped to the strut, do not stretch or twist it.
  • Battery disconnect is not normally required for this repair.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks
  • Torque wrench
  • Metric socket set
  • Metric wrench set
  • Breaker bar
  • Ratchet
  • Serpentine pry bar
  • Spring compressor (specialty)
  • Ball joint separator tool (specialty)
  • Penetrating oil
  • Paint marker
  • Safety glasses
  • Mechanic gloves

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Front strut assembly - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2
  • Upper strut mount and bearing kit - Qty: 2
  • New strut mounting hardware - Qty: 1 set
  • Sway bar link hardware - Qty: 1 set
  • Wheel alignment - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
  • Loosen the front lug nuts before lifting the truck.
  • Plan for a wheel alignment after the repair.
  • If the strut is being replaced because of a ride issue, inspect the tire, ball joints, control arm bushings, and sway bar links too.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Lift and secure the front of the truck

  • Use a floor jack to raise the front of your Sierra at the proper lift point.
  • Set the frame securely on jack stands and keep the floor jack lightly supporting the vehicle.
  • Remove the front wheels with the metric socket set.

Step 2: Free the strut connections

  • Use penetrating oil on the strut-to-knuckle bolts if they are rusty.
  • Use the metric socket set and ratchet to remove the lower strut mounting bolts.
  • If a brake hose or ABS wire is clipped to the strut, unclip it carefully by hand or with a trim tool if needed.
  • Mark bolt positions first.

Step 3: Separate the strut from the steering knuckle

  • Use a breaker bar if the lower bolts are tight.
  • Support the lower control arm with the floor jack so the knuckle does not drop suddenly.
  • Remove the lower strut bolts fully with the metric socket set and set them aside if they are reusable.

Step 4: Remove the top strut fasteners

  • Open the hood and locate the upper strut mount nuts.
  • Use the metric socket set to remove the top nuts while holding the strut assembly from below.
  • Lower the strut assembly out of the wheel well.

Step 5: Disassemble the old strut

  • Install the spring compressor on the coil spring evenly on both sides.
  • Use the spring compressor (specialty) to compress the spring until it is loose on the strut.
  • Remove the center nut from the strut shaft with the correct metric socket set and a wrench if needed.
  • Remove the upper mount, bearing, spring seat, and spring.
  • Keep the spring compressor opposite each other.

Step 6: Assemble the new strut

  • Transfer the coil spring to the new strut in the same position.
  • Install the new upper mount and bearing kit.
  • Use the spring compressor (specialty) to align the parts, then install the shaft nut.
  • Torque to factory specification for the strut shaft nut and upper mount hardware.
  • Slowly release the spring compressor and confirm the spring seats correctly.

Step 7: Install the new strut assembly

  • Position the assembled strut into the wheel well.
  • Install the upper mount nuts by hand first using the metric socket set.
  • Align the lower strut ears with the steering knuckle.
  • Install the lower bolts and tighten them with the torque wrench to factory specification.
  • Torque to factory specification for the upper mount nuts and lower strut bolts.

Step 8: Reconnect everything and reinstall the wheel

  • Reattach any brake hose or ABS wire brackets.
  • Reinstall the wheel and hand-tighten the lug nuts with the metric socket set.
  • Lower the truck and torque the lug nuts with the torque wrench to factory specification in a star pattern.

✅ After Repair

  • Start by checking the ride height and make sure nothing is rubbing.
  • Turn the steering wheel lock-to-lock and listen for noise.
  • Test drive slowly first, then recheck all fasteners.
  • Schedule a front-end alignment as soon as possible.
  • If you replaced only one side, compare ride feel and noise from side to side.
