🔧 Front Strut Assembly - Replacement

On your RAV4, the front suspension uses MacPherson struts. Replacing the complete strut assembly restores ride quality, steering control, and helps eliminate clunks, bouncing, or uneven tire wear. This guide assumes you are replacing the front struts as an assembly.

Difficulty Level: Advanced | Estimated Time: 4-6 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Support the vehicle with jack stands; never work under a vehicle held only by a jack.
  • The front suspension spring is under high tension. If you are not replacing the complete strut assembly, use a spring compressor (specialty) only with extreme caution.
  • Hybrid high-voltage components are not part of this repair, but keep the vehicle in OFF and remove the key fob from the area.
  • Do not let the brake caliper hang by the hose if you remove any brake bracket during access.
  • After installation, a wheel alignment is required.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated for vehicle weight)
  • Wheel chocks
  • 21mm lug wrench
  • 14mm socket
  • 17mm socket
  • 19mm socket
  • 6mm hex bit
  • Torque wrench
  • Breaker bar
  • Ratchet
  • Penetrating oil
  • Paint marker
  • Pry bar
  • Strut spring compressor (specialty)
  • Safety glasses
  • Mechanic gloves

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Front strut assembly - Qty: 2
  • Front strut mount and bearing - Qty: 2
  • Front strut mounting nuts - Qty: 6
  • Front lower strut-to-knuckle bolts and nuts - Qty: 4
  • Sway bar link nuts - Qty: 2

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and engage the parking brake.
  • Keep the steering wheel centered before disassembly.
  • Loosen the front lug nuts slightly before lifting.
  • Replace struts in pairs so ride height and damping stay even.
  • Mark parts before removal.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Loosen the front wheel

  • Use a 21mm lug wrench to loosen the front wheel lug nuts 1/2 turn while the vehicle is still on the ground.

Step 2: Raise and support the vehicle

  • Use a floor jack to lift the front of the vehicle at the proper jacking point.
  • Place jack stands under the front support points and lower the vehicle onto them.
  • Remove the front wheel with the 21mm lug wrench.

Step 3: Free the strut from attached components

  • Use a 14mm socket to remove the brake hose bracket bolt from the strut, if equipped.
  • Use a 14mm socket to remove the ABS wire bracket from the strut.
  • Use a 6mm hex bit and 17mm socket to remove the sway bar link nut from the strut if the link interferes with removal.
  • Support the link so the joint does not bind.

Step 4: Mark the strut position

  • Use a paint marker to mark the relationship between the strut and steering knuckle.
  • This helps keep alignment close enough to drive to the alignment shop.

Step 5: Separate the strut from the knuckle

  • Use a 19mm socket and breaker bar to remove the two lower strut-to-knuckle bolts.
  • If the knuckle sticks, use a pry bar to gently spread the joint open.
  • Torque on reassembly: 177 Nm (131 ft-lbs) for the lower strut bolts.

Step 6: Remove the upper strut nuts

  • Open the hood and locate the top of the strut tower.
  • Use a 14mm socket to remove the three upper strut mount nuts.
  • Hold the strut from below as you remove the last nut.
  • Torque on reassembly: 47 Nm (35 ft-lbs) for the upper mount nuts.

Step 7: Remove the strut assembly

  • Lower the strut out through the wheel well and remove it from the vehicle.
  • If needed, compress the suspension slightly by raising the knuckle with the jack to help align the holes during removal.

Step 8: Prepare the new strut assembly

  • If you bought a complete assembly, compare it side by side with the old one.
  • Transfer any brackets that are not included, using the correct 14mm socket or 17mm socket as needed.
  • If reusing a spring and mount, use a spring compressor (specialty) and install the new mount and bearing.
  • Double-check spring end position.

Step 9: Install the new strut

  • Position the strut in the tower and start the upper nuts by hand using a 14mm socket.
  • Align the lower strut ears with the steering knuckle.
  • Install the lower bolts with a 19mm socket and tighten them finger tight first.
  • Torque upper nuts to 47 Nm (35 ft-lbs).
  • Torque lower bolts to 177 Nm (131 ft-lbs).

Step 10: Reconnect brackets and sway bar link

  • Use a 14mm socket to reinstall the brake hose bracket and ABS wire bracket.
  • If removed, reinstall the sway bar link using a 6mm hex bit and 17mm socket.
  • Torque the sway bar link nut to 55 Nm (41 ft-lbs).

Step 11: Reinstall the wheel

  • Install the wheel and hand-tighten the lug nuts.
  • Lower the vehicle to the ground using the floor jack.
  • Use a torque wrench with a 21mm socket to tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern.
  • Torque lug nuts to 103 Nm (76 ft-lbs).

Step 12: Repeat on the other side

  • Replace the opposite front strut using the same steps.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the vehicle and check for unusual noises over small bumps.
  • Turn the steering wheel lock-to-lock and make sure nothing rubs.
  • Inspect the brake hose and ABS wire routing to confirm nothing is stretched.
  • Schedule a four-wheel alignment as soon as possible.
  • Drive gently for the first 25-50 miles and recheck lug nut torque.
