🔧 Grand Cherokee - Front Strut Assembly Replacement

Replacing the front strut assemblies restores ride control, steering stability, and braking control when the struts are leaking, noisy, or worn out. On your Grand Cherokee, the front strut is a coilover assembly, meaning the shock and spring are mounted together as one unit.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2-4 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Support your Grand Cherokee with jack stands before working underneath or near the suspension.
  • ⚠️ Never rely on a floor jack alone. A floor jack lifts the vehicle; jack stands hold it safely.
  • ⚠️ Do not loosen the center strut shaft nut unless the spring is safely contained. The coil spring is under high pressure and can cause serious injury.
  • ⚠️ Replace struts in pairs on the same axle for safe handling and even ride height.
  • ⚠️ Have the wheel alignment checked after replacement to prevent tire wear and steering pull.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks
  • 1/2-inch drive breaker bar
  • 1/2-inch drive torque wrench
  • 3/8-inch drive ratchet
  • 22mm socket
  • 21mm socket
  • 18mm socket
  • 15mm socket
  • 13mm socket
  • 21mm wrench
  • 18mm wrench
  • 15mm wrench
  • Flat-blade screwdriver
  • Trim clip removal tool
  • Rubber mallet
  • Paint marker
  • Bungee cord
  • Penetrating oil
  • Safety glasses
  • Mechanic gloves

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Front loaded strut assembly - Qty: 2
  • Front strut-to-lower-control-arm bolt and nut kit - Qty: 2
  • Front stabilizer bar link nuts - Qty: 2

Note: A loaded strut assembly includes the spring, strut, upper mount, and bearing already assembled. This is much safer for a beginner than using a spring compressor.

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park your Grand Cherokee on level ground.
  • Set the parking brake and place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
  • Loosen the front wheel lug nuts slightly before lifting the vehicle.
  • Spray penetrating oil on the lower strut bolt, stabilizer bar link nut, and upper strut mount nuts.
  • Use a paint marker to mark the position of the lower strut mount before removal. This helps keep the alignment close enough to drive to an alignment shop.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Loosen the Front Wheel Lug Nuts

  • Use a 22mm socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to loosen the front lug nuts about one turn.
  • Do not remove the lug nuts yet.
  • Loosen wheels while tires touch ground.

Step 2: Raise and Support the Front

  • Use a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) to lift the front of your Grand Cherokee at the front crossmember lift area.
  • Place jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum) under the proper front frame support points.
  • Lower the vehicle gently onto the jack stands.
  • Keep the floor jack nearby as a backup support, but do not rely on it alone.

Step 3: Remove the Front Wheel

  • Use a 22mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to remove the lug nuts.
  • Remove the wheel and place it flat under the side of the vehicle as an extra safety backup.

Step 4: Support the Lower Control Arm

  • Place the floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) under the lower control arm.
  • Raise it just enough to lightly support the suspension.
  • The lower control arm is the large suspension arm beneath the strut and wheel hub.

Step 5: Disconnect the Stabilizer Bar Link from the Strut Area

  • Use an 18mm socket and 18mm wrench to remove the stabilizer bar link nut from the strut or lower bracket area, depending on your replacement access.
  • The stabilizer bar link is the small vertical rod connecting the suspension to the sway bar.
  • Move the link aside by hand.

Step 6: Free Brake Hose or ABS Wire Brackets if Attached

  • Use a 13mm socket or 15mm socket to remove any brake hose or ABS wire bracket attached to the strut assembly.
  • Use a trim clip removal tool or flat-blade screwdriver to gently release plastic wire clips.
  • Do not pull on the brake hose or ABS wiring.
  • Use a bungee cord to hold wiring safely out of the way.

Step 7: Remove the Lower Strut Mount Bolt

  • Use a 21mm socket and 21mm wrench to remove the lower strut mounting nut and bolt.
  • If the bolt is tight, use the 1/2-inch drive breaker bar for extra leverage.
  • Use a rubber mallet to tap the bolt out if needed.
  • Do not use a metal hammer directly on the threads.

Step 8: Remove the Upper Strut Mount Nuts

  • Open the hood.
  • Locate the upper strut mount nuts at the top of the strut tower.
  • Use a 15mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to remove the upper mount nuts.
  • Hold the strut assembly with one hand while removing the final nut.
  • Do not remove the center strut shaft nut.

Step 9: Remove the Old Strut Assembly

  • Lower the floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) slightly under the lower control arm to create room.
  • Guide the strut assembly out through the wheel well by hand.
  • If it is stuck, use a rubber mallet to gently tap the lower bracket loose.

Step 10: Install the New Loaded Strut Assembly

  • Position the new front loaded strut assembly into the strut tower by hand.
  • Install the upper strut mount nuts finger-tight first.
  • Use a 15mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to snug the upper nuts evenly.
  • Do not fully torque the upper nuts yet.

Step 11: Install the Lower Strut Bolt

  • Use the floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) to raise or lower the lower control arm until the bolt holes line up.
  • Slide in the new lower strut bolt by hand.
  • Install the new nut.
  • Use a 21mm socket, 21mm wrench, and 1/2-inch drive torque wrench to tighten the lower strut fastener to Torque to 190 Nm (140 ft-lbs).

Step 12: Torque the Upper Strut Mount Nuts

  • Use a 15mm socket and 1/2-inch drive torque wrench to tighten the upper strut mount nuts evenly.
  • Tighten each upper nut to Torque to 61 Nm (45 ft-lbs).

Step 13: Reconnect the Stabilizer Bar Link

  • Move the stabilizer bar link back into place by hand.
  • Use an 18mm socket, 18mm wrench, and 1/2-inch drive torque wrench to tighten the stabilizer bar link nut to Torque to 102 Nm (75 ft-lbs).

Step 14: Reattach Brake Hose and ABS Wire Brackets

  • Use a 13mm socket or 15mm socket to reinstall any brackets removed earlier.
  • Use a trim clip removal tool or your fingers to seat plastic clips back into their holes.
  • Make sure the brake hose and ABS wire are not twisted or stretched.

Step 15: Repeat on the Other Side

  • Repeat Steps 3 through 14 on the opposite front strut.
  • Use the same tools and torque values.
  • Always replace struts in left-right pairs.

Step 16: Reinstall the Front Wheels

  • Install the wheels by hand.
  • Use a 22mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to snug the lug nuts in a star pattern.
  • A star pattern means tightening across the wheel, not around in a circle.

Step 17: Lower the Vehicle and Torque the Lug Nuts

  • Use the floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) to lift the vehicle slightly off the jack stands.
  • Remove the jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum).
  • Lower the vehicle fully to the ground.
  • Use a 22mm socket and 1/2-inch drive torque wrench to tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern to Torque to 176 Nm (130 ft-lbs).

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Bounce the front of your Grand Cherokee gently by hand. It should settle quickly without repeated bouncing.
  • ✅ Turn the steering wheel fully left and right while parked. Listen for rubbing, clunking, or stretching noises.
  • ✅ Take a slow test drive first. Start under 25 mph and check for noises over small bumps.
  • ✅ Recheck the lug nut torque after the first short drive using a 22mm socket and 1/2-inch drive torque wrench.
  • ✅ Schedule a four-wheel alignment as soon as possible. Strut replacement can change suspension geometry.
