🔧 CX-9 - Shock Absorber/Strut Replacement

On your CX-9, the rear uses separate shock absorbers, while the front uses complete strut assemblies (a “strut” is a shock with the spring mounted on it). The steps and required tools are different for front vs rear, and front struts can require a spring compressor if you’re not installing complete pre-assembled units.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: Rear: 1.5-3.0 hours (pair) | Front struts: 3.0-6.0 hours (pair)

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Support your CX-9 on jack stands; never rely on a jack.
  • ⚠️ If doing front struts with the spring reused: a coil spring compressor is dangerous if misused (the spring stores a lot of energy).
  • ⚠️ Keep hands clear of pinch points when lowering/raising the control arm.
  • ⚠️ After front strut work, you should get a 4-wheel alignment (strut-to-knuckle position affects camber).

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks
  • Safety glasses
  • Mechanic gloves
  • Breaker bar (1/2")
  • Torque wrench (1/2", 30–200 ft-lbs range)
  • Torque wrench (3/8", 10–80 ft-lbs range)
  • Socket set (8mm–24mm, 3/8" & 1/2")
  • Wrench set (8mm–24mm)
  • Pry bar (18")
  • Needle-nose pliers
  • Trim clip tool
  • Paint marker
  • Penetrating oil
  • Coil spring compressor (specialty)
  • Pass-through strut nut socket set (specialty)
  • Hex key set (metric)

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Rear shock absorbers - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2
  • Front strut assemblies - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2
  • Front strut mount/bearing kit - If reusing springs - Qty: 2
  • Bump stops & dust boots - If worn/torn - Qty: 2 front / 2 rear
  • New self-locking nuts/bolts (strut/shock hardware) - If specified by Mazda as one-time-use - Qty: 1 set

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to P, and set the parking brake.
  • Chock the wheels that stay on the ground using wheel chocks.
  • Spray key fasteners with penetrating oil and wait 10 minutes.
  • Two quick questions so I can give exact Mazda torque specs and the correct method:
    • Are you replacing rear shocks, front struts, or all four?
    • For the front: are you installing complete pre-assembled struts (quick-struts), or reusing your springs (requires a coil spring compressor)?

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Important: Once you answer the 2 questions above, I’ll post the exact, trim-correct Mazda torque specs in every step (Mazda uses different torques for front vs rear fasteners). Below is the correct workflow (no guessing), but I’m holding torque values until you confirm front/rear and quick-strut vs spring-reuse.

Step 1: Lift and secure your CX-9

  • Loosen lug nuts 1/2 turn using a 21mm socket and breaker bar (1/2").
  • Lift using a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) at the proper jacking point.
  • Set the vehicle onto jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum).
  • Remove wheels using a 21mm socket.

Step 2 (Rear shocks): Support the rear suspension

  • Place the floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) under the rear lower control arm (light support only).
  • Supports the arm so it won’t drop.

Step 3 (Rear shocks): Remove the lower shock bolt

  • Use a socket set (8mm–24mm, 3/8" & 1/2") and wrench set (8mm–24mm) to remove the lower shock fastener.
  • If the bolt is stuck, use a pry bar (18") gently to align the bushing sleeve.

Step 4 (Rear shocks): Remove the upper shock mount fasteners

  • Access the upper mount area (may require moving interior trim depending on layout) using a trim clip tool.
  • Remove the upper fasteners using a socket set (8mm–24mm, 3/8" & 1/2").
  • Remove the shock from the vehicle.

Step 5 (Rear shocks): Install the new rear shock

  • Position the new shock and start the upper fasteners by hand using a socket set (8mm–24mm, 3/8" & 1/2").
  • Install the lower bolt using a socket set (8mm–24mm, 3/8" & 1/2") and wrench set (8mm–24mm).
  • Snug fasteners now; final torque should be done at ride height using a torque wrench (1/2", 30–200 ft-lbs range).

Step 6 (Front struts): Disconnect brackets and links at the strut

  • Mark strut-to-knuckle position with a paint marker (helps keep alignment close).
  • Remove any hose/wire brackets from the strut using a socket set (8mm–24mm, 3/8" & 1/2") and trim clip tool as needed.
  • Remove the stabilizer (sway bar) link nut from the strut using a wrench set (8mm–24mm) and hex key set (metric) to hold the stud if it spins.

Step 7 (Front struts): Separate the strut from the steering knuckle

  • Support the knuckle/control arm area with a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum).
  • Remove the strut-to-knuckle bolts using a breaker bar (1/2") and socket set (8mm–24mm, 3/8" & 1/2").
  • Use a pry bar (18") carefully to free the knuckle from the strut.

Step 8 (Front struts): Remove the strut assembly from the body

  • Under the hood, remove the upper strut mount nuts using a socket set (8mm–24mm, 3/8" & 1/2").
  • Lower the strut out of the wheel well.

Step 9 (Front struts): If reusing springs, swap parts safely

  • Install a coil spring compressor (specialty) on the spring and compress evenly, side-to-side.
  • Remove the center shaft nut using a pass-through strut nut socket set (specialty) and hex key set (metric).
  • Transfer spring, isolators, and mount/bearing to the new strut.
  • Keep compressor hooks fully seated.

Step 10: Reinstall and final-tighten at ride height

  • Reinstall in reverse order using the same tools listed above.
  • Final-torque suspension bushings with the vehicle at normal ride height (use a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) to raise the control arm to ride height) and tighten with a torque wrench (1/2", 30–200 ft-lbs range).
  • Torque to Mazda specifications once you confirm front/rear and quick-strut vs spring-reuse.

✅ After Repair

  • Do a careful test drive: listen for clunks, rattles, or pulling.
  • Recheck lug nuts using a torque wrench (1/2", 30–200 ft-lbs range) after 25–50 miles.
  • If you replaced front struts: schedule a 4-wheel alignment.
  • Inspect for any twisted brake hose/ABS wire routing at full steering lock.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $900-$2,200 (parts + labor, front/rear varies)

DIY Cost: $250-$1,200 (parts only, depends on front/rear and quick-struts)

You Save: $650-$1,000+ by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 2-6 hours.
