🔧 Front Shocks - Replacement

Your Sierra 1500 does not use front struts. It uses front shock absorbers, so this is the correct repair for the front suspension. Replacing them restores ride control and helps reduce bouncing, clunks, and loose steering feel.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2-3 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Support the truck securely on jack stands before removing suspension parts.
  • Do not work under a truck supported only by a floor jack.
  • Keep hands clear of the coil spring area and suspension travel.
  • If the truck has aftermarket lift components, bolt access and torque values may differ.
  • Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks
  • 21mm socket
  • 18mm socket
  • 15mm socket
  • Ratchet
  • Breaker bar
  • Torque wrench
  • Penetrating oil
  • Hammer
  • Safety glasses
  • Mechanic gloves

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Front shock absorber - Qty: 2
  • Front shock hardware kit - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground.
  • Set the parking brake.
  • Chock the rear wheels.
  • Loosen the front wheel lug nuts before lifting the truck.
  • Spray the shock bolts with penetrating oil and let it soak.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Raise and support the front end

  • Use a floor jack to lift the front of the truck by the frame.
  • Place jack stands under the frame rails and lower the truck onto them.
  • Remove the front wheels with a 21mm socket.

Step 2: Remove the lower shock bolt

  • Use an 18mm socket and breaker bar to remove the lower shock mounting bolt.
  • If the bolt is stuck, tap it gently with a hammer while turning it out.
  • Torque on installation: 159 Nm (117 ft-lbs)

Step 3: Remove the upper shock nut

  • Use an 18mm socket and ratchet to remove the upper shock nut.
  • Support the shock with one hand as the nut comes off.
  • Remove the shock from the wheel well.
  • Torque on installation: 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs)

Step 4: Install the new shock absorber

  • Position the new shock in the same orientation as the old one.
  • Install the upper mount first by hand using the original hardware or new hardware kit.
  • Install the lower bolt and snug it down with an 18mm socket.
  • Do not fully tighten until the vehicle is at ride height.

Step 5: Reassemble and torque

  • Reinstall the wheels using a 21mm socket.
  • Lower the truck so the suspension is at normal ride height.
  • Tighten the lower shock bolt with an 18mm socket and torque wrench to 159 Nm (117 ft-lbs).
  • Tighten the upper shock nut with an 18mm socket and torque wrench to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs).
  • Torque the wheel lug nuts to the factory wheel-spec value for your Sierra.

✅ After Repair

  • Test drive slowly over a few bumps and listen for clunks.
  • Check that the truck sits level and the ride feels controlled.
  • Recheck all fasteners after the first drive.
  • If you replaced both sides, the truck should feel more stable in turns and braking.
