🔧 Front Shock Absorber Replacement

Assumption: Your Sierra does not use front struts. It uses front shock absorbers with torsion-bar suspension, so this procedure covers the front shocks instead.

Replacing the front shocks helps restore ride control, reduce bouncing, and improve steering feel. On your Sierra, the job is straightforward, but rusted fasteners are common and the truck must be safely supported before you start.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.5-3 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Support the truck on jack stands placed under the frame. Never work under a truck held only by a jack.
  • Keep clear of the torsion bar suspension components. Do not remove or adjust torsion bars for this repair.
  • Use eye protection. Rust and dirt often fall when the shock bolts come out.
  • If the truck has automatic ride control or aftermarket lift parts, inspect the shock type before ordering parts.
  • No battery disconnect is required for this repair.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks
  • Safety glasses
  • Mechanic gloves
  • 13mm socket
  • 18mm socket
  • 13mm box wrench
  • 18mm box wrench
  • Ratchet
  • Breaker bar
  • Torque wrench
  • Penetrating oil

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Front shock absorber - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2
  • Front shock mounting hardware kit - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Chock the rear wheels.
  • Spray the upper and lower shock bolts with penetrating oil and let them soak before removal.
  • Lift the front of the truck and support it securely on jack stands under the frame.
  • Remove the front wheel for easier access.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Raise and support the truck

  • Use the floor jack to lift the front of the Sierra by the frame.
  • Place jack stands under the frame rails and lower the truck onto them.
  • Remove the front wheel with the lug wrench or 21mm socket if equipped with factory lug nuts.

Step 2: Loosen the lower shock bolt

  • Use the 18mm socket and ratchet to remove the lower shock bolt.
  • If the nut spins, hold the back side with the 18mm box wrench.
  • More penetrating oil helps on rusty trucks.

Step 3: Remove the upper shock fastener

  • Use the 13mm socket and ratchet to remove the upper shock nut and hardware.
  • Support the shock with one hand as the last fastener comes off.
  • Remove the old shock from the wheel well.

Step 4: Install the new shock absorber

  • Position the new shock in the same orientation as the old one.
  • Start the upper hardware by hand first using the 13mm socket.
  • Install the lower bolt and nut by hand using the 18mm socket and 18mm box wrench.
  • Torque the lower shock bolt to 150 Nm (111 ft-lbs).
  • Torque the upper shock nut to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs).

Step 5: Reassemble the wheel area

  • Reinstall the wheel and snug the lug nuts by hand.
  • Raise the truck slightly with the floor jack, remove the jack stands, then lower the truck to the ground.
  • Use the torque wrench to tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern to 190 Nm (140 ft-lbs).

Step 6: Repeat on the other side

  • Replace the opposite front shock the same way.
  • Always replace shocks in pairs.

✅ After Repair

  • Drive slowly at first and listen for clunks or rattles.
  • Check both shock bolts again after a short test drive.
  • If the truck still bounces excessively, inspect the upper control arms, ball joints, and sway bar links.
