🔧 Grand Cherokee - Suspension Bushing Replacement

Suspension bushings are rubber isolators pressed into control arms and links. On your Grand Cherokee, the front lower control arm bushings are commonly serviced by replacing the complete lower control arm assembly instead of pressing bushings out, which is safer and more beginner-friendly.

Assumption: This guide covers front lower control arm bushing replacement by replacing the complete front lower control arm assemblies.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 3-5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Support your Grand Cherokee with jack stands only. Never work under a vehicle supported only by a jack.
  • ⚠️ The coil spring and suspension carry heavy force. Do not loosen strut or spring parts for this repair.
  • ⚠️ Final tightening of control arm bolts must be done at normal ride height. This prevents the new bushings from being twisted and failing early.
  • ⚠️ Replace suspension parts in pairs when possible. If one front lower control arm bushing is worn, the other side is often close behind.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.
  • ⚠️ An alignment is required after this repair to prevent tire wear and pulling.

  • Front lower control arm assembly - Right: 1
  • Front lower control arm mounting bolts and nuts - Qty: 1 kit
  • Front lower ball joint nut - Qty: 2
  • Alignment service - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park on flat, solid ground and set the parking brake.
  • 🧱 Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
  • 🛞 Loosen the front lug nuts slightly before lifting the vehicle.
  • 🧴 Spray penetrating oil on the lower control arm bolts and lower ball joint nuts. Let it soak for 10-15 minutes.
  • 🖊️ Use a paint marker to mark the position of the cam bolts before removal. Cam bolts are eccentric bolts used to adjust alignment.
  • 📏 Plan for a professional wheel alignment immediately after the repair.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Loosen the Front Wheel Lug Nuts

  • Use a 21mm socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to loosen each front lug nut about half a turn.
  • Do not remove the lug nuts yet.
  • Loosen wheels before lifting.

Step 2: Lift and Support the Front

  • Use a floor jack under the front crossmember to raise the front of your Grand Cherokee.
  • Place jack stands under the proper front frame support points.
  • Lower the vehicle gently onto the stands.
  • Shake the vehicle lightly by hand to confirm it is stable.

Step 3: Remove the Front Wheels

  • Use a 21mm socket to remove the loosened lug nuts.
  • Remove both front wheels and set them aside.

Step 4: Remove Any Splash Shield Access Panels

  • Use a 10mm socket and trim clip removal tool to remove any lower splash shield fasteners blocking control arm bolt access.
  • Set the clips and screws aside in a small container.

Step 5: Mark the Alignment Cam Bolt Positions

  • Use a paint marker to draw a line across each front lower control arm cam washer and the subframe.
  • This helps place the new arm close enough to drive to the alignment shop.
  • Paint marks do not replace alignment.

Step 6: Clean and Soak the Fasteners

  • Use a wire brush to clean exposed threads on the lower ball joint nut and control arm bolts.
  • Apply penetrating oil to the threads and let it soak again for a few minutes.

Step 7: Separate the Lower Ball Joint from the Steering Knuckle

  • Use a 24mm socket or 24mm wrench to remove the lower ball joint nut.
  • Install a ball joint separator between the lower control arm ball joint stud and steering knuckle.
  • Tighten the ball joint separator until the joint pops loose.
  • A ball joint separator is a tool that safely pushes a tapered joint apart without hammering directly on the part.
  • Use a dead blow hammer only on the separator if extra help is needed.

Step 8: Remove the Front Lower Control Arm Mounting Bolts

  • Support the control arm lightly with the floor jack.
  • Use a 21mm socket with a 21mm wrench to loosen the front mounting bolt and nut.
  • Use a 24mm socket with a 24mm wrench to loosen the rear cam bolt and nut.
  • Remove the bolts while noting their direction and washer position.
  • Use a pry bar to gently guide the control arm out of the subframe pockets.

Step 9: Remove the Old Control Arm

  • Lower the floor jack slightly to remove tension from the arm.
  • Pull the control arm out by hand.
  • Compare the old and new control arm assemblies before installation.
  • Make sure the ball joint and bushing positions match.

Step 10: Install the New Control Arm

  • Position the new lower control arm into the subframe pockets by hand.
  • Use a pry bar gently if needed to align the bolt holes.
  • Install the front mounting bolt and rear cam bolt by hand.
  • Do not fully tighten the bolts yet.
  • Align the cam washers close to your paint marks.

Step 11: Reconnect the Lower Ball Joint

  • Guide the lower ball joint stud into the steering knuckle by hand.
  • Install the new lower ball joint nut.
  • Use a 24mm socket and torque wrench to tighten the nut to Torque to 95 Nm (70 ft-lbs).

Step 12: Repeat on the Other Side

  • Use the same tools and steps to replace the opposite front lower control arm.
  • Keep the left and right parts separated until installed.
  • Replace in pairs for even handling.

Step 13: Set the Suspension to Normal Ride Height

  • Place the floor jack under the outer end of one lower control arm.
  • Raise the arm until the hub sits close to normal ride height.
  • Do not lift the vehicle off the jack stand.
  • This step loads the bushing like the vehicle is sitting on the ground.

Step 14: Final-Tighten the Control Arm Bolts

  • Use a 21mm socket, 21mm wrench, and torque wrench to tighten the front lower control arm bolt to Torque to 150 Nm (111 ft-lbs).
  • Use a 24mm socket, 24mm wrench, and torque wrench to tighten the rear lower control arm cam bolt to Torque to 175 Nm (129 ft-lbs).
  • Repeat this ride-height tightening process on the other side.

Step 15: Reinstall Splash Shields and Wheels

  • Use a 10mm socket and trim clip removal tool to reinstall any splash shields or access panels.
  • Install the front wheels by hand-starting all lug nuts.
  • Use a 21mm socket to snug the lug nuts in a star pattern.

Step 16: Lower the Vehicle and Torque the Lug Nuts

  • Use the floor jack to raise the vehicle slightly and remove the jack stands.
  • Lower your Grand Cherokee fully to the ground.
  • Use a 21mm socket and torque wrench to tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern to Torque to 176 Nm (130 ft-lbs).

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Bounce the front of the vehicle gently and listen for clunks.
  • ✅ Test drive slowly first. Listen for knocking, popping, or steering pull.
  • ✅ Get a professional four-wheel alignment as soon as possible.
  • ✅ Recheck lug nut torque after 25-50 miles.
  • ✅ If the steering wheel is off-center or stability control lights appear, stop driving and have the alignment and steering angle checked.
