🔧 Suspension Bushings - Front Lower Control Arm Bushing Replacement

Assumption: This guide covers the front lower control arm bushings on your Explorer. Suspension bushings are not one single part, so the exact repair changes by location.

The bushings isolate road vibration and keep the suspension aligned. On this job, the control arm is usually removed and the bushings are pressed out and back in, then the suspension is torqued at ride height.

Difficulty Level: Advanced | Estimated Time: 4-6 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Support the Explorer with jack stands on solid, level ground. Never work under a vehicle supported only by a jack.
  • Suspension parts are under load. Keep hands clear when removing bolts and lowering the arm.
  • Use a spring compressor only if the control arm must be separated from a loaded spring assembly.
  • Torque all suspension fasteners at normal ride height to avoid bushing damage.
  • After the repair, an alignment is strongly recommended.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks
  • Breaker bar
  • Ratchet
  • Metric socket set
  • Metric wrench set
  • Torque wrench
  • Ball joint separator (specialty)
  • Hydraulic press (specialty)
  • Control arm bushing service kit (specialty)
  • Penetrating oil
  • Paint marker
  • Safety glasses
  • Mechanic gloves

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Front lower control arm bushings - Qty: 2
  • Front lower control arm nuts and bolts set - Qty: 1
  • Front lower control arm - Qty: 1 if bushings are not serviceable
  • Front wheel alignment - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Loosen the front lug nuts before lifting the vehicle.
  • Mark the position of cam bolts or eccentric washers before removal.
  • If the arm uses non-serviceable bushings, replacing the complete arm is often easier than pressing bushings.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Lift and secure the vehicle

  • Use the floor jack to raise the front of the Explorer.
  • Place jack stands under the approved frame points.
  • Remove the front wheel with the breaker bar and metric socket set.
  • Keep the wheel under the vehicle as backup.

Step 2: Free the control arm

  • Spray all fasteners with penetrating oil.
  • Use the metric socket set and metric wrench set to remove the control arm bolts.
  • If needed, use the ball joint separator to disconnect the lower ball joint from the steering knuckle.
  • Mark cam bolt positions with the paint marker before removal.

Step 3: Remove the control arm

  • Support the suspension with the floor jack.
  • Remove the control arm completely and note the orientation of each bushing.
  • Inspect the arm for cracks or rust. If damaged, replace the whole arm.

Step 4: Press out the old bushings

  • Use the hydraulic press and control arm bushing service kit to press out the old bushings.
  • Clean the bushing bores before installing new parts.
  • Press squarely to avoid bending the arm.

Step 5: Press in the new bushings

  • Use the hydraulic press and control arm bushing service kit to install the new bushings in the same orientation as the originals.
  • Make sure any arrows, notches, or flats match the original position.
  • Do not lubricate rubber bushings unless the service part instructions say to.

Step 6: Reinstall the control arm

  • Install the arm by hand with the original hardware or the new front lower control arm nuts and bolts set.
  • Reconnect the ball joint using the metric socket set and torque wrench.
  • Torque to factory specification for each fastener using the service information for your Explorer.

Step 7: Final torque at ride height

  • Reinstall the wheel and lower the vehicle so the suspension sits at normal ride height.
  • Use the torque wrench to tighten all control arm pivot bolts at ride height.
  • Torque to factory specification for each fastener using the service information for your Explorer.
  • This prevents early bushing failure.

✅ After Repair

  • Check that the steering wheel is centered and the vehicle tracks straight.
  • Listen for clunks or squeaks on the test drive.
  • Inspect all fasteners again after the road test.
  • Schedule a professional wheel alignment.
