🔧 Grand Cherokee - Front Lower Control Arm Bushing Replacement

On your Grand Cherokee, the most common “suspension bushings” that get replaced are the front lower control arm bushings. These rubber bushings isolate road vibration and keep the front wheels positioned correctly; when worn, they can cause clunks, wandering steering, uneven tire wear, or vibration.

Difficulty Level: Advanced | Estimated Time: 4-7 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Suspension fasteners are high-load parts. Support your Grand Cherokee securely on jack stands before working underneath.
  • ⚠️ Never work under a vehicle supported only by a floor jack.
  • ⚠️ Coil spring and suspension parts can move suddenly if the control arm is unsupported.
  • ⚠️ Do not loosen the front lower control arm bolts with the vehicle sitting unsupported.
  • ⚠️ Final tightening must be done at normal ride height. Tightening rubber bushings while the suspension hangs can tear the new bushings early.
  • ⚠️ A hydraulic press is a machine that pushes bushings in and out with controlled force. Keep hands clear of press plates and adapters.
  • ⚠️ A professional alignment is required after this repair.

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Front lower control arm front bushing - Qty: 2
  • Front lower control arm rear bushing - Qty: 2
  • Front lower control arm fastener kit - Qty: 1
  • Front lower ball joint nut - Qty: 2
  • Front lower control arm assemblies - Qty: 2, optional recommended alternative

Beginner tip: Replacing the complete front lower control arm assemblies is usually easier and safer than pressing bushings out and in.

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park your Grand Cherokee on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
  • Loosen the front wheel lug nuts slightly before lifting the vehicle.
  • Spray penetrating oil on the lower control arm bolts, ball joint nut, and sway bar link fasteners. Let it soak for 10-15 minutes.
  • Use a paint marker to mark the position of the lower control arm bolts and washers before removal. This helps keep the alignment close enough to drive to an alignment shop.
  • This job requires a hydraulic press. If you do not have one, replace the complete lower control arm assemblies instead.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Loosen the Front Wheel Lug Nuts

  • Use a 22mm socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to loosen the front lug nuts about one turn.
  • Do not remove the lug nuts yet.
  • Loosen wheels before lifting.

Step 2: Raise and Secure the Front

  • Use the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to lift the front of your Grand Cherokee at the front crossmember lift point.
  • Place jack stands rated 3-ton minimum under the front frame support points.
  • Lower the vehicle gently onto the jack stands.
  • Shake the vehicle lightly to confirm it is stable before working underneath.

Step 3: Remove the Front Wheels

  • Use a 22mm socket to remove the front lug nuts.
  • Remove both front wheels and set them flat on the ground.

Step 4: Remove Lower Shields if Needed

  • Use a 10mm socket or 13mm socket to remove any lower splash shield bolts blocking access to the control arm mounts.
  • Use a trim clip removal tool if plastic push clips are installed.
  • Set the shield and clips aside in order.

Step 5: Support the Steering Knuckle

  • Place the floor jack under the outer end of the lower control arm near the ball joint.
  • Raise the jack lightly until it supports the arm. Do not lift the vehicle off the jack stands.
  • The steering knuckle is the large metal part that holds the wheel hub and brake assembly.

Step 6: Disconnect the Sway Bar Link from the Lower Control Arm

  • Use an 18mm socket and matching wrench to remove the sway bar link nut from the lower control arm if it blocks removal.
  • Push the sway bar link aside carefully.
  • The sway bar link connects the suspension arm to the anti-roll bar, which helps reduce body lean in turns.

Step 7: Mark the Control Arm Bolt Positions

  • Use a paint marker to mark the current position of the lower control arm mounting bolts and washers.
  • Make marks across the washer and frame bracket.
  • This does not replace an alignment, but it helps keep the vehicle close enough for a careful drive afterward.

Step 8: Separate the Lower Ball Joint

  • Use a 21mm socket or 24mm socket to remove the lower ball joint nut, depending on the nut size fitted.
  • Use a ball joint separator to separate the lower ball joint stud from the steering knuckle.
  • Do not hammer directly on the ball joint threads.
  • Lower the floor jack slightly to relieve tension once the ball joint separates.

Step 9: Remove the Lower Control Arm Bolts

  • Use a 21mm socket, 24mm socket, 1/2-inch drive breaker bar, and matching wrench to loosen the front lower control arm pivot bolt.
  • Use a 21mm socket, 24mm socket, and matching wrench to loosen the rear lower control arm pivot bolt.
  • Remove the bolts while supporting the control arm by hand or with the floor jack.
  • Lower and remove the control arm from the vehicle.

Step 10: Press Out the Old Bushings

  • Use a wire brush to clean dirt and rust from the bushing bores.
  • Set the control arm in the hydraulic press 12-ton minimum with the control arm bushing press adapter kit.
  • Use press adapters that contact the outer metal shell of the bushing, not the thin rubber center.
  • Press the old front bushing out slowly.
  • Reposition the arm and press the old rear bushing out slowly.
  • Stop if the arm bends, shifts, or the adapter slips.

Step 11: Press In the New Bushings

  • Compare each new bushing to the old bushing before installation.
  • Match the bushing orientation exactly. Some bushings have voids, arrows, or offset sleeves that must face the same direction as original.
  • Use the hydraulic press and control arm bushing press adapter kit to press the new front bushing into the arm.
  • Use the hydraulic press and control arm bushing press adapter kit to press the new rear bushing into the arm.
  • Press only on the outer shell of the bushing.
  • Confirm the bushings are fully seated and straight.

Step 12: Reinstall the Lower Control Arm

  • Position the control arm into the front cradle brackets.
  • Install the front and rear pivot bolts by hand first.
  • Use a 21mm socket, 24mm socket, and matching wrench to snug the bolts only. Do not final tighten yet.
  • Guide the lower ball joint stud back into the steering knuckle.
  • Install a new lower ball joint nut by hand.

Step 13: Tighten the Ball Joint and Sway Bar Link

  • Use a torque wrench and 21mm socket or 24mm socket to tighten the lower ball joint nut to Torque to 95 Nm (70 ft-lbs).
  • Reconnect the sway bar link to the lower control arm.
  • Use an 18mm socket and matching wrench to tighten the sway bar link nut to Torque to 102 Nm (75 ft-lbs).

Step 14: Repeat on the Other Side

  • Repeat Steps 5 through 13 on the opposite front lower control arm.
  • Replace bushings in pairs so the suspension reacts evenly side to side.

Step 15: Load the Suspension to Ride Height

  • Reinstall the front wheels by hand using the lug nuts.
  • Use the 22mm socket to snug the lug nuts in a star pattern.
  • Use the floor jack to raise the lower control arm until the suspension is near normal ride height.
  • Normal ride height means the control arm sits close to its usual driving position, not hanging down.

Step 16: Final Tighten the Control Arm Bolts

  • With the suspension loaded, use a torque wrench, 21mm socket, 24mm socket, and matching wrench to tighten the front lower control arm pivot bolt to Torque to 203 Nm (150 ft-lbs).
  • Use the torque wrench, 21mm socket, 24mm socket, and matching wrench to tighten the rear lower control arm pivot bolt to Torque to 203 Nm (150 ft-lbs).
  • Repeat on the opposite side.
  • Final tighten at ride height.

Step 17: Reinstall Shields and Lower the Vehicle

  • Use a 10mm socket or 13mm socket to reinstall any lower splash shield bolts.
  • Use the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to lift the vehicle slightly off the jack stands.
  • Remove the jack stands rated 3-ton minimum.
  • Lower your Grand Cherokee to the ground slowly.

Step 18: Torque the Wheel Lug Nuts

  • Use a torque wrench and 22mm socket to tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern.
  • Tighten each front wheel lug nut to Torque to 176 Nm (130 ft-lbs).

✅ After Repair

  • Drive slowly at first and listen for clunks, rubbing, or looseness.
  • Have a professional four-wheel alignment performed as soon as possible.
  • After 50-100 miles, recheck the wheel lug nut torque to Torque to 176 Nm (130 ft-lbs).
  • If the steering wheel is off-center, the vehicle pulls, or stability control lights appear, do not delay the alignment.
