🔧 Grand Cherokee - Front Lower Control Arm Bushing Replacement

Suspension bushings are rubber isolators that let the control arms move while keeping the wheels aligned and stable. On your Grand Cherokee, the most common “suspension bushing” repair is replacing the front lower control arm bushings, which usually requires removing the lower control arm and pressing the old bushings out.

Difficulty Level: Advanced | Estimated Time: 4-6 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Never work under your Grand Cherokee supported only by a floor jack. Always use jack stands.
  • ⚠️ Suspension parts can be under load. Support the lower control arm before removing fasteners.
  • ⚠️ Do not hammer directly on the steering knuckle, ball joint stud, or aluminum components.
  • ⚠️ Final tightening of control arm pivot bolts must be done at normal ride height to prevent bushing preload and early failure.
  • ⚠️ An alignment is required after this repair.
  • ⚠️ If your Grand Cherokee has Quadra-Lift air suspension, disable tire jack mode before lifting.

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park your Grand Cherokee on level ground with the steering wheel straight.
  • 🅿️ Shift to Park and apply the parking brake.
  • 🛞 Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
  • 🔧 Loosen the front wheel lug nuts slightly before lifting using a 22mm socket and breaker bar.
  • 📌 Use a paint marker to mark the position of the control arm cam bolts before removal. Cam bolts are offset alignment bolts that adjust wheel alignment.
  • 📱 If equipped with Quadra-Lift air suspension, set Apps > Settings > Suspension > Tire Jack Mode to ON before lifting.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Lift and Secure the Front End

  • Use a 22mm socket and breaker bar to loosen the front wheel lug nuts 1/2 turn while the tires are on the ground.
  • Use a floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to lift the front of your Grand Cherokee at the front crossmember.
  • Place jack stands rated 3-ton minimum under the front frame support points.
  • Lower the vehicle gently onto the jack stands.
  • Use a 22mm socket to remove the front wheel lug nuts.
  • Remove both front wheels by hand.

Step 2: Support the Lower Control Arm

  • Place the floor jack under the outer end of the lower control arm.
  • Raise the jack until it lightly supports the arm.
  • Do not lift the vehicle off the jack stands.
  • Light support prevents sudden movement.

Step 3: Disconnect the Sway Bar Link

  • Use an 18mm socket and 18mm combination wrench to remove the lower sway bar link nut from the lower control arm.
  • If the stud spins, hold the stud with the correct internal hex or wrench surface while turning the nut with the 18mm wrench.
  • Move the sway bar link away from the control arm by hand.

Step 4: Separate the Lower Ball Joint

  • Use needle-nose pliers to remove the cotter pin if fitted.
  • Use a 21mm or 22mm socket as fitted to loosen the lower ball joint nut.
  • Leave the nut threaded on a few turns to protect the threads.
  • Use a ball joint separator to separate the lower ball joint from the steering knuckle.
  • Remove the ball joint nut fully using the same socket.
  • Lower the floor jack slightly to let the control arm separate from the knuckle.

Step 5: Mark the Control Arm Alignment Bolts

  • Use a paint marker to mark the position of each cam bolt washer against the frame bracket.
  • Mark both the front and rear lower control arm pivot bolt positions.
  • These marks help you get close enough to drive safely to an alignment shop.

Step 6: Remove the Lower Control Arm

  • Use a 21mm, 22mm, or 24mm socket as fitted on the control arm pivot bolt head.
  • Use the matching 21mm, 22mm, or 24mm combination wrench on the nut.
  • Remove the front pivot bolt and nut.
  • Remove the rear pivot bolt and nut using the same socket and wrench sizes.
  • Use a pry bar 18-inch to gently guide the control arm out of the frame brackets.
  • Remove the lower control arm by hand.

Step 7: Press Out the Old Bushings

  • Place the lower control arm on a stable workbench.
  • Use a paint marker to mark the depth and orientation of each original bushing.
  • Use a control arm bushing press kit or hydraulic shop press 12-ton minimum to press out the old bushings.
  • Support the control arm around the bushing bore so the arm does not bend.
  • Press only on the outer metal sleeve of the bushing.
  • Do not press on the thin stamped areas of the control arm.

Step 8: Press In the New Bushings

  • Compare each new bushing to the old bushing by hand.
  • Line up the new bushing in the same orientation as the original.
  • Use the control arm bushing press kit or hydraulic shop press 12-ton minimum to press the new bushing into the arm.
  • Press on the bushing’s outer metal sleeve only.
  • Stop when the bushing matches the original depth marks.
  • Repeat for the other bushing in the same control arm.
  • Go slow and keep it straight.

Step 9: Reinstall the Lower Control Arm

  • Place the lower control arm back into the frame brackets by hand.
  • Install the front and rear pivot bolts by hand.
  • Use the paint marks to place the cam washers close to their original positions.
  • Use a 21mm, 22mm, or 24mm socket and matching wrench to snug the pivot bolts only.
  • Do not final-tighten the pivot bolts while the suspension is hanging.

Step 10: Reconnect the Lower Ball Joint

  • Use the floor jack to raise the lower control arm until the lower ball joint stud enters the steering knuckle.
  • Install the new lower ball joint nut by hand.
  • Use a torque wrench and 21mm or 22mm socket as fitted to tighten the lower ball joint nut to Torque to 95 Nm (70 ft-lbs).
  • If a cotter pin is used, install a new cotter pin with needle-nose pliers.

Step 11: Reconnect the Sway Bar Link

  • Insert the sway bar link stud into the lower control arm by hand.
  • Install the new sway bar link nut by hand.
  • Use a torque wrench, 18mm socket, and 18mm wrench to tighten the sway bar link nut to Torque to 100 Nm (74 ft-lbs).

Step 12: Repeat on the Other Side

  • Repeat Steps 2 through 11 on the opposite front lower control arm.
  • Use the same tools and the same safety support method.
  • Replace bushings in pairs to keep handling even from side to side.

Step 13: Load the Suspension Before Final Tightening

  • Install both front wheels by hand.
  • Use a 22mm socket to snug the lug nuts.
  • Use the floor jack to raise the vehicle slightly and remove the jack stands.
  • Lower your Grand Cherokee onto ramps or drive-on blocks so the suspension sits at normal ride height.
  • Use a torque wrench with the correct 21mm, 22mm, or 24mm socket and matching wrench to tighten the lower control arm pivot bolts to Torque to 190 Nm (140 ft-lbs).
  • Use a torque wrench and 22mm socket to tighten the wheel lug nuts in a star pattern to Torque to 176 Nm (130 ft-lbs).

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Turn the steering wheel lock-to-lock while parked and listen for clunks or binding.
  • ✅ Test drive slowly first, then recheck for any loose hardware noises.
  • ✅ Schedule a four-wheel alignment immediately after replacement.
  • ✅ Recheck the lug nut torque after 25-50 miles using a torque wrench and 22mm socket.
  • ✅ If equipped with Quadra-Lift, turn Tire Jack Mode OFF at Apps > Settings > Suspension > Tire Jack Mode after the vehicle is back on the ground.
