🔧 Tucson - Suspension Bushing Replacement

Suspension bushings are rubber mounts that cushion the control arms and suspension links. On your Tucson, worn bushings can cause clunks, wandering steering, uneven tire wear, or vibration over bumps.

Assumption: This guide covers the most common service: front lower control arm bushing replacement by replacing the complete lower control arm assembly. This is the most beginner-friendly and reliable method because pressing bushings in and out requires a hydraulic press.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2-3 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Support your Tucson with jack stands only. Never work under a vehicle held up by a jack alone.
  • ⚠️ Work on level ground and chock the rear wheels before lifting the front.
  • ⚠️ Suspension bolts can be tight. Use steady pressure, not jerky force.
  • ⚠️ Do not loosen the axle nut or separate the CV axle for this repair.
  • ⚠️ Final tightening of control arm bushing bolts should be done with the suspension near normal ride height to prevent twisting the new bushings.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks
  • Safety glasses
  • Mechanic gloves
  • 21mm lug nut socket
  • 1/2-inch drive breaker bar
  • 1/2-inch drive ratchet
  • Torque wrench (20-200 ft-lbs)
  • 17mm socket
  • 19mm socket
  • 17mm wrench
  • 19mm wrench
  • 22mm wrench
  • Ball joint separator (specialty)
  • Pry bar 18-inch
  • Rubber mallet
  • Needle nose pliers
  • Penetrating oil spray
  • Paint marker
  • Hydraulic jack with wood block

  • Front lower control arm assembly - Passenger side - Qty: 1
  • New control arm mounting bolts and nuts - Qty: 1 set
  • New ball joint pinch bolt and nut - Qty: 2
  • New cotter pins if equipped - Qty: 2

Replace in pairs: For best handling and alignment, replace both front lower control arms together.

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park your Tucson on level ground.
  • Set the parking brake and place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
  • Loosen the front lug nuts slightly before lifting the vehicle.
  • Spray penetrating oil on the lower control arm bolts and ball joint fasteners. Let it soak for 10-15 minutes.
  • Take a photo of the control arm position before removal. This helps during reassembly.
  • A ball joint separator is a tool that separates the ball joint from the steering knuckle without hammering directly on suspension parts.
  • A torque wrench is a tool that tightens bolts to the correct tightness so they are not loose or over-tightened.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Loosen the Front Wheel Lug Nuts

  • Use a 21mm lug nut socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to loosen each front lug nut about half a turn.
  • Do not remove the lug nuts yet.
  • Loosen wheels before lifting.

Step 2: Raise and Support the Front

  • Use a floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to lift the front of your Tucson at the front center lifting area.
  • Place jack stands rated 3-ton minimum under the approved front side support points.
  • Lower the vehicle gently onto the jack stands.
  • Use safety glasses and mechanic gloves before working underneath.

Step 3: Remove the Front Wheels

  • Use the 21mm lug nut socket and 1/2-inch drive ratchet to remove the loosened lug nuts.
  • Remove both front wheels and set them aside flat.

Step 4: Mark the Original Control Arm Position

  • Use a paint marker to mark around the front and rear control arm mounting points.
  • This gives you a visual reference when installing the new control arm.
  • Photos help more than memory.

Step 5: Support the Suspension Lightly

  • Place a hydraulic jack with wood block under the lower control arm.
  • Raise it just enough to support the arm, not enough to lift the vehicle off the jack stand.
  • This reduces tension on the bolts.

Step 6: Disconnect the Lower Ball Joint

  • Use a 17mm socket and 17mm wrench to remove the lower ball joint pinch bolt and nut at the steering knuckle.
  • If a cotter pin is fitted, remove it first with needle nose pliers.
  • Use a ball joint separator to separate the ball joint stud from the steering knuckle.
  • If needed, use a rubber mallet to gently tap the control arm downward.
  • Do not strike the CV axle, brake rotor, or aluminum steering knuckle directly.

Step 7: Remove the Front Control Arm Mounting Bolt

  • Use a 19mm socket and 19mm wrench to loosen and remove the front lower control arm mounting bolt and nut.
  • If the bolt is stuck, spray more penetrating oil spray and move the bolt back and forth slowly.

Step 8: Remove the Rear Control Arm Mounting Bolt

  • Use a 19mm socket and 22mm wrench to loosen and remove the rear lower control arm mounting bolt and nut.
  • Keep one hand on the control arm as the last bolt comes out.
  • Use an 18-inch pry bar only if the bushing sleeve is lightly stuck in the bracket.

Step 9: Remove the Old Control Arm

  • Use the 18-inch pry bar to carefully guide the control arm out of the subframe brackets.
  • Compare the old and new control arms side by side.
  • Make sure the ball joint position, bushing shape, and mounting holes match before installation.

Step 10: Install the New Control Arm

  • Position the new front lower control arm assembly into the subframe brackets by hand.
  • Install the front and rear mounting bolts by hand first.
  • Use a 19mm socket, 19mm wrench, and 22mm wrench only to snug the bolts for now.
  • Do not fully torque the bushing bolts while the suspension is hanging.

Step 11: Reconnect the Lower Ball Joint

  • Guide the ball joint stud into the steering knuckle by hand.
  • Use the hydraulic jack with wood block to raise the lower control arm slightly if needed.
  • Install the new ball joint pinch bolt and nut.
  • Use a 17mm socket and 17mm wrench to tighten the ball joint pinch bolt.
  • Torque to 49-59 Nm (36-44 ft-lbs)

Step 12: Load the Suspension Before Final Tightening

  • Use the hydraulic jack with wood block under the outer end of the control arm.
  • Raise the control arm until it is close to normal ride height.
  • Normal ride height means the suspension is positioned like the vehicle is sitting on the ground.
  • This prevents the new rubber bushings from being twisted at rest.

Step 13: Torque the Control Arm Mounting Bolts

  • Use a torque wrench, 19mm socket, 19mm wrench, and 22mm wrench to tighten the control arm mounting bolts.
  • Front control arm mounting bolt: Torque to 137-157 Nm (101-116 ft-lbs)
  • Rear control arm mounting bolt: Torque to 137-157 Nm (101-116 ft-lbs)
  • Repeat Steps 5-13 on the other side.

Step 14: Reinstall the Front Wheels

  • Install the wheels by hand.
  • Use a 21mm lug nut socket and 1/2-inch drive ratchet to snug the lug nuts in a star pattern.
  • Raise the vehicle slightly with the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum, remove the jack stands rated 3-ton minimum, and lower your Tucson to the ground.

Step 15: Torque the Lug Nuts

  • Use a torque wrench and 21mm lug nut socket to tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern.
  • Torque to 107-127 Nm (79-94 ft-lbs)
  • Star pattern keeps the wheel even.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Bounce the front of your Tucson gently and listen for clunks.
  • ✅ Start with a slow test drive around the block.
  • ✅ Listen for knocking, popping, or grinding noises.
  • ✅ Recheck that the lug nuts are torqued after the first short drive.
  • ✅ Get a four-wheel alignment after replacing lower control arms. This is important for tire wear and straight tracking.
  • ✅ If the steering wheel is off-center or your Tucson pulls to one side, do not delay the alignment.
