  • Front suspension fasteners may be tight; use correct tools to avoid rounding bolts.
  • After suspension work, a wheel alignment is required.
  • Hybrid system shutdown is not required for this mechanical repair, but keep the vehicle OFF and the key fob away from the car.

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and engage the parking brake.
  • Loosen the front wheel lug nuts before raising the vehicle.
  • Raise the front and support it securely with jack stands.
  • Mark the position of bolts and cams with a paint marker before removal.
  • Take a photo before unbolting anything.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the front wheel

  • Use a 21mm socket to loosen the lug nuts, then remove the wheel after lifting the vehicle.
  • Set the wheel aside safely.

Step 2: Inspect and mark alignment points

  • Use a paint marker to mark the position of the control arm cam bolts and brackets.
  • This helps keep the alignment close enough to drive to the shop.

Step 3: Remove the lower control arm

  • Use a 17mm socket and 19mm socket to remove the lower control arm bolts and nuts.
  • Use a breaker bar if the bolts are tight.
  • If the ball joint is attached to the knuckle, use a 19mm socket to remove the ball joint nut.
  • Use a ball joint separator (specialty) to free the ball joint from the steering knuckle if needed.
  • Torque on reassembly: 103 Nm (76 ft-lbs) for lower arm-to-body mounting bolts unless the service fastener spec on your control arm differs.

Step 4: Remove the old bushings

  • Use a hydraulic press (specialty) or bushing press kit (specialty) to press the old bushings out of the control arm.
  • Clean the bore with a bolt brush and inspect for cracks or elongation.
  • Press straight to avoid damaging the arm.

Step 5: Install the new bushings

  • Use the hydraulic press (specialty) or bushing press kit (specialty) to install the new bushings in the same orientation as the originals.
  • Lightly lubricate only if the bushing manufacturer allows it.
  • Make sure the bushing is fully seated and aligned.

Step 6: Reinstall the control arm

  • Position the control arm back in place and hand-start all bolts.
  • Use a 17mm socket and 19mm socket to reinstall the mounting hardware.
  • Do not fully tighten rubber-bushed pivot bolts with the suspension hanging.
  • Raise the suspension to normal ride height before final tightening.
  • Torque to 103 Nm (76 ft-lbs) for the lower arm mounting bolts at ride height.

Step 7: Reinstall wheel and lower vehicle

  • Reinstall the wheel using a 21mm socket.
  • Lower the vehicle and torque the lug nuts in a star pattern.
  • Torque to 103 Nm (76 ft-lbs) for the lug nuts.

Step 8: Road test and inspect

  • Drive slowly at first and listen for clunks or rubbing.
  • Check the repaired side for looseness or shifting.
  • Schedule a four-wheel alignment as soon as possible.

  • Watch for steering wheel pull, vibration, or tire noise.
  • If you replaced bushings on one side, inspect the opposite side soon.
