🔧 Suspension Bushings - Front Lower Control Arm Bushing Replacement

Assumption: This guide covers the front lower control arm bushings on your Sierra. Suspension bushings are pressed-in rubber/metal parts, so this is a more advanced repair that usually requires removal of the control arm and a press or press kit.

Difficulty Level: Advanced | Estimated Time: 4-6 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Support the truck with jack stands before removing any suspension parts.
  • Do not work under a vehicle held up only by a jack.
  • Keep hands clear when using a press or ball joint press tool; the part can slip suddenly.
  • Mark cam bolts and control arm positions before removal to help preserve alignment.
  • An alignment is required after this repair.
  • If equipped with aftermarket lift parts, final torque should be set with the suspension at normal ride height.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated for truck weight)
  • Wheel chocks
  • Safety glasses
  • Mechanic gloves
  • Breaker bar
  • Torque wrench
  • Metric socket set
  • Metric combination wrench set
  • Ratchet
  • Penetrating oil
  • Ball joint separator tool
  • Hydraulic press or bushing press kit (specialty)
  • Bushing driver set (specialty)
  • Paint marker
  • Hammer
  • Wire brush

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Chock the rear wheels.
  • Loosen the front lug nuts before lifting the truck.
  • Raise the front and support it securely on jack stands.
  • Remove the front wheel for access.
  • Spray all suspension fasteners with penetrating oil and let it soak.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the wheel

  • Use the breaker bar or ratchet to remove the lug nuts.
  • Set the wheel aside safely.

Step 2: Mark the control arm position

  • Use a paint marker to mark the cam bolt position and the control arm location.
  • This helps the alignment shop.

Step 3: Disconnect the lower control arm

  • Use the metric socket set and metric wrench set to remove the lower control arm bolts and fasteners.
  • If the ball joint must be separated, use the ball joint separator tool.
  • Support the control arm as the last bolt comes out.

Step 4: Remove the control arm

  • Carefully remove the control arm from the vehicle.
  • Note the orientation of each bushing before pressing anything out.

Step 5: Press out the old bushings

  • Use the hydraulic press or bushing press kit (specialty) with the bushing driver set (specialty) to press out the old bushings.
  • Clean the bore with a wire brush before installing the new parts.
  • Keep the press straight.

Step 6: Install the new bushings

  • Use the hydraulic press or bushing press kit (specialty) to press the new bushings into the control arm.
  • Match the original orientation exactly.
  • Apply a thin coat of front suspension grease only if the bushing design calls for it.

Step 7: Reinstall the control arm

  • Position the control arm back into place.
  • Install the bolts by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
  • Snug the fasteners, but do not fully torque yet.

Step 8: Torque at ride height

  • Lower the truck so the suspension is at normal ride height.
  • Use the torque wrench to tighten the control arm fasteners.
  • Torque to manufacturer specification for the exact bolt locations on your Sierra.
  • Final torque with weight on wheels is critical.

Step 9: Reinstall the wheel

  • Install the wheel and hand-tighten the lug nuts.
  • Lower the truck fully and use the torque wrench to tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern.
  • Torque to manufacturer specification for the wheel lug nuts.

✅ After Repair

  • Check that all bolts are tight and nothing is contacting the tire.
  • Test drive slowly and listen for clunks or squeaks.
  • Have the front end aligned immediately.
  • Recheck fastener torque after a short drive if needed.
