Assumption: This covers the front lower ball joints on your Sienna, and Toyota typically services them as part of the lower control arm/ball joint assembly.

🔧 Ball Joints - Replacement

Your Sienna’s front ball joints connect the steering knuckle to the suspension and let the wheel move up and down while turning. If they’re worn, you may hear clunks, feel loose steering, or see uneven tire wear. Replacing them restores front-end stability and helps keep the vehicle safe.

Difficulty Level: Advanced | Estimated Time: 4-6 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Support the van with jack stands only; never rely on a floor jack.
  • The front suspension is under load; keep hands clear when separating the knuckle.
  • If equipped with a rusted or seized joint, use controlled force only. Do not strike the axle shaft threads.
  • After work, get a professional front-end alignment immediately.
  • Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Front lower ball joint assembly - Qty: 2
  • Ball joint cotter pins - Qty: 2
  • Front lower control arm hardware - Qty: 1 set

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Loosen the front wheel lug nuts before lifting.
  • Raise the front of the van and support it securely on jack stands.
  • If replacing both sides, do one side at a time so the other side can be used as a reference.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the front wheel

  • Use a 21mm socket and breaker bar to loosen the lug nuts, then remove the wheel.
  • Set the wheel aside flat so it cannot roll.

Step 2: Free the ball joint from the steering knuckle

  • Spray penetrating oil on the ball joint nut and taper area.
  • Use a 17mm socket or 19mm socket to remove the ball joint retaining nut, depending on the hardware on your van.
  • If the stud spins, hold it with a matching wrench while loosening the nut.
  • Use a ball joint separator (specialty) to break the taper loose from the knuckle.
  • Do not hammer directly on the stud.

Step 3: Disconnect the lower control arm side if the joint is press-integrated

  • Use a 14mm socket and 17mm socket to remove the lower control arm fasteners as needed.
  • Support the arm with a floor jack before removing the final bolt.
  • Remove the assembly from the vehicle.
  • If your replacement is a separate pressed-in ball joint, have it pressed out and in with a proper press tool.

Step 4: Install the new ball joint or control arm assembly

  • Position the new part in the same orientation as the old one.
  • Use a 12mm socket, 14mm socket, or the original fasteners as applicable to install the mounting hardware.
  • Insert the ball joint stud into the steering knuckle.
  • Install a new cotter pin after tightening the nut.
  • Torque to factory specification for the ball joint and control arm fasteners.

Step 5: Reinstall the wheel and lower the van

  • Put the wheel back on and hand-start all lug nuts.
  • Lower the van to the ground.
  • Use a torque wrench and 21mm socket to tighten the lug nuts evenly in a star pattern.
  • Torque to factory wheel lug specification.

Step 6: Inspect the repair

  • Check that the stud is seated properly and the cotter pin is installed.
  • Turn the steering wheel lock-to-lock and confirm there is no binding.
  • Recheck for looseness after the first short drive.

âś… After Repair

  • Test drive at low speed and listen for clunks or rubbing.
  • Check for steering pull, vibration, or looseness.
  • Schedule a professional alignment right away.
  • If you replaced both sides, recheck all fasteners after driving.
