  • Spray the ball joint hardware with penetrating oil and let it soak.
  • Mark the position of any alignment shims or cam bolts if equipped.
  • Support the control arm before separating the joint.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Raise and secure the front end

  • Use the floor jack to lift the front of the Land Cruiser at the proper jacking point.
  • Place jack stands under the frame and lower the vehicle onto them.
  • Remove the front wheel with a 21mm socket.

Step 2: Access the steering knuckle area

  • Use a 12mm socket or 14mm socket to remove any splash shield or undercover pieces blocking access.
  • If needed, secure the brake caliper out of the way with a bungee cord or hook.

Step 3: Separate the ball joint from the knuckle

  • Remove the cotter pin with needle-nose pliers.
  • Use a 19mm socket or 21mm socket to remove the castle nut from the ball joint stud.
  • Use a ball joint separator (specialty) or pickle fork (specialty) to break the stud loose from the steering knuckle.
  • Do not hammer on the threads.

Step 4: Remove the ball joint from the control arm

  • Use a 17mm socket and breaker bar to remove the ball joint mounting bolts or nuts, depending on design.
  • If the joint is press-fit, use the ball joint press (specialty) to press it out of the control arm.
  • Clean the mounting surface with a wire brush.

Step 5: Install the new ball joint

  • Position the new ball joint into the control arm.
  • Use the ball joint press (specialty) to seat it fully.
  • Install the retaining hardware by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
  • Torque the ball joint mounting fasteners to the factory specification for your Land Cruiser service configuration.

Step 6: Reconnect the knuckle

  • Align the stud with the steering knuckle and raise or lower the control arm with a floor jack if needed.
  • Install the new castle nut using a 19mm socket or 21mm socket.
  • Torque to factory specification, then continue tightening only enough to line up the cotter pin hole.
  • Install a new cotter pin with needle-nose pliers.

Step 7: Reassemble the front end

  • Reinstall any splash shields with a 12mm socket or 14mm socket.
  • Reinstall the wheel and snug the lug nuts with a 21mm socket.
  • Lower the vehicle and torque the lug nuts to factory specification in a star pattern with a torque wrench.

  • Start the vehicle and turn the steering wheel lock-to-lock while checking for odd noises.
  • Test drive slowly at first and listen for clunks or looseness.
  • Book a front wheel alignment as soon as possible.
  • Recheck all fasteners after the first drive.
