🔧 Front Lower Ball Joints - Replacement

On your Camry, the front lower ball joints connect the lower control arm to the steering knuckle and let the front wheels turn and move up and down smoothly. If they’re worn, you may hear clunks, feel steering play, or see uneven tire wear. This job is best done in pairs, and an alignment is required afterward.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2-4 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Support the vehicle securely with jack stands before removing any suspension parts.
  • Do not work under a vehicle supported only by a jack.
  • Keep hands clear of the steering knuckle and control arm while separating the joint.
  • Replace ball joints in pairs for even handling.
  • An alignment is required after this repair.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated for vehicle weight)
  • Wheel chocks
  • Safety glasses
  • Mechanic gloves
  • 21mm socket

  • 17mm socket
  • 14mm socket
  • Ratchet
  • Breaker bar
  • Torque wrench
  • Ball joint separator (specialty)
  • Pry bar
  • Hammer
  • Paint marker
  • Penetrating oil

  • Front lower ball joint - Qty: 2
  • Ball joint mounting nuts - Qty: 4
  • Ball joint cotter pins - Qty: 2
  • Front alignment - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Loosen the front wheel lug nuts before lifting the vehicle.
  • Soak the ball joint fasteners with penetrating oil if they are rusty.
  • Keep the steering wheel centered while the suspension is apart.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Raise and secure the front of the vehicle

  • Use a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) to lift the front of the vehicle at the proper lift point.
  • Set the vehicle onto jack stands (rated for vehicle weight) and make sure it is stable before working.
  • Remove the front wheels with a 21mm socket.

Step 2: Remove access components

  • Turn the steering wheel for better access to the ball joint area on the side you are working on.
  • If needed, remove the splash shield fasteners with a 10mm socket or clip tool for clearer access.

Step 3: Separate the ball joint from the steering knuckle

  • Remove the ball joint cotter pin if equipped, using needle-nose pliers.
  • Remove the ball joint castle nut with a 17mm socket or 19mm socket, depending on the fastener style.
  • Use a ball joint separator (specialty) to break the taper loose from the steering knuckle.
  • Do not strike the threaded stud directly.

Step 4: Remove the ball joint from the lower control arm

  • Mark the original position of the ball joint if applicable with a paint marker.
  • Remove the mounting bolts and nuts with a 14mm socket and 17mm socket.
  • Support the control arm as needed with a pry bar to relieve tension.
  • Remove the old ball joint from the control arm.

Step 5: Install the new ball joint

  • Position the new ball joint in the control arm in the same orientation as the original.
  • Install the new mounting hardware by hand first.
  • Tighten the ball joint mounting fasteners with a torque wrench.
  • Torque to 62 Nm (46 ft-lbs) for the ball joint mounting bolts.

Step 6: Reconnect the ball joint to the steering knuckle

  • Align the ball joint stud into the steering knuckle.
  • Install the new castle nut using a 17mm socket or 19mm socket.
  • Torque to 103 Nm (76 ft-lbs) for the ball joint nut.
  • Install a new cotter pin if your hardware uses one.
  • Rotate the nut only enough to insert the pin.

Step 7: Reassemble and repeat on the other side

  • Reinstall any splash shields or brackets removed earlier.
  • Repeat the same procedure on the other side if replacing both ball joints.
  • Reinstall the wheels using a 21mm socket.
  • Torque to 103 Nm (76 ft-lbs) for the wheel lug nuts.

✅ After Repair

  • Lower the vehicle and pump the brake pedal before moving it.
  • Test for clunks or looseness at low speed in a safe area.
  • Schedule a front end alignment immediately.
  • Recheck lug nut torque after driving a short distance.
