🔧 Ball Joints - Replacement

Your RAV4 uses the front lower ball joints as part of the front lower control arm assembly. If the joint is loose, noisy, or has torn grease boots, the safe repair is usually to replace the complete control arm assembly on the affected side.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2-4 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Support the vehicle on jack stands on solid, level ground. Do not work under a vehicle supported only by a jack.
  • Use a ball joint separator carefully. A ball joint separator is a tool that forces the taper apart without damaging nearby parts.
  • The steering knuckle can move suddenly when the ball joint lets go. Keep hands clear of pinch points.
  • If you disconnect the lower control arm, the wheel alignment will change. Plan on a professional alignment after the repair.
  • No battery disconnect is required for this repair.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated for vehicle weight)

  • 21mm socket

  • 17mm socket
  • 14mm socket
  • Breaker bar
  • Torque wrench

  • Flat-blade screwdriver
  • Safety glasses

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Loosen the front lug nuts before lifting the vehicle.
  • Lift one side at a time and support the vehicle securely with jack stands.
  • If the control arm bolts are rusty, spray penetrating oil on them and let it soak before removal.
  • Replace both sides if one ball joint is worn. This keeps handling balanced.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Raise the vehicle and remove the wheel

  • Use a 21mm socket to loosen the front lug nuts.
  • Raise the front of the RAV4 with a floor jack and support it with jack stands.
  • Remove the wheel with the 21mm socket.

Step 2: Access the lower control arm

  • Turn the steering wheel for better access if needed.
  • Use a 14mm socket and 17mm socket to remove any splash shield or bracket fasteners in the way.
  • Keep the hardware organized.

Step 3: Separate the ball joint from the steering knuckle

  • Use a 17mm socket and combination wrench set to remove the ball joint pinch bolt or fastener at the knuckle, if equipped.
  • Use a ball joint separator to release the taper from the steering knuckle.
  • If needed, tap the knuckle lightly with a hammer to help the joint release.
  • Do not hit the threads directly.

Step 4: Remove the lower control arm

  • Use a 19mm socket and breaker bar to remove the front control arm bolt.
  • Use a 19mm socket and breaker bar to remove the rear control arm bolt.
  • Remove the lower control arm assembly from the vehicle.
  • Torque note: reinstall control arm bolts to factory specification for this RAV4.

Step 5: Install the new lower control arm assembly

  • Position the new lower control arm in place by hand.
  • Install the front and rear bolts finger-tight first with a 19mm socket.
  • Connect the ball joint to the steering knuckle.
  • Install the pinch bolt or retaining fastener using a 17mm socket.
  • Torque the ball joint fastener to factory specification.

Step 6: Tighten the control arm fasteners at ride height

  • Raise the lower control arm slightly with the floor jack until it sits near normal ride height.
  • Use a torque wrench and 19mm socket to tighten the front and rear control arm bolts to factory specification.
  • This helps prevent bushing damage.

Step 7: Reinstall the wheel

  • Install the wheel and snug the lug nuts with a 21mm socket.
  • Lower the vehicle and torque the lug nuts with a torque wrench to 103 Nm (76 ft-lbs).

Step 8: Repeat on the other side if needed

  • If the opposite side is worn, repeat the same procedure.
  • Replace in pairs when possible.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the vehicle and listen for any clunks or binding while turning the steering wheel.
  • Check that the wheel turns freely and the suspension sits evenly.
  • Inspect the ball joint area again after a short test drive.
  • Get a professional wheel alignment as soon as possible.
