🔧 Control Arms - Front Suspension Replacement

Assumption: Front control arms, one side at a time. Repeat the same steps on the other side if needed. Replacing control arms restores suspension geometry and removes play in the front end, but the truck must be aligned after the repair.

Difficulty Level: Advanced | Estimated Time: 3-5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Support the truck securely with jack stands before removing suspension bolts.
  • Do not work under a truck supported only by a jack.
  • The front coil spring can stay loaded in the suspension. Keep clear of the spring path while separating components.
  • Do not let the brake hose or ABS wire hang from the knuckle.
  • An alignment is required after control arm replacement.
  • No battery disconnect is required for this repair.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands
  • Wheel chocks
  • Safety glasses
  • Mechanic gloves
  • 1/2-inch drive ratchet
  • 1/2-inch drive torque wrench
  • Breaker bar
  • Metric socket set
  • Metric wrench set
  • Metric deep socket set
  • Ball joint separator (specialty)
  • Pickle fork (specialty)
  • Hammer
  • Penetrating oil
  • Paint marker

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Front upper control arm - Qty: 1
  • Front lower control arm - Qty: 1
  • Front control arm hardware kit - Qty: 1
  • Front wheel alignment - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Chock the rear wheels.
  • Break the front lug nuts loose before lifting the truck.
  • Raise the front and support it securely with jack stands.
  • Mark the position of the cam bolts if your replacement arms reuse alignment cams. This helps get it close enough to drive to the alignment shop.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the front wheel

  • Use a floor jack to lift the front of the truck and place it on jack stands.
  • Use a lug wrench or socket to remove the wheel.
  • Keep the wheel under the frame as extra backup.

Step 2: Support the suspension

  • Use the floor jack under the lower control arm or knuckle area to support the suspension assembly.
  • This keeps parts from dropping suddenly when the ball joint is separated.

Step 3: Disconnect the sway bar link if needed

  • If the link blocks access, use the correct metric wrench and socket to remove the sway bar end link nuts.
  • Move the link out of the way.

Step 4: Separate the ball joint from the knuckle

  • Use the correct metric socket and wrench to remove the ball joint nut.
  • Use a ball joint separator or pickle fork to break the taper loose from the steering knuckle.
  • Leave the nut threaded on a few turns until the joint pops free.
  • Do not strike the stud directly.

Step 5: Remove the control arm pivot bolts

  • Use the correct metric sockets and breaker bar to remove the upper or lower control arm mounting bolts.
  • If cam bolts are present, mark their location first with a paint marker.
  • Remove the control arm from the truck.

Step 6: Install the new control arm

  • Position the new control arm in the frame mounts.
  • Install the pivot bolts by hand first.
  • Attach the ball joint stud to the knuckle and install the nut by hand.
  • Do not fully tighten the pivot bolts yet.

Step 7: Reconnect and torque the fasteners

  • Use the torque wrench to tighten the ball joint nut to factory specification for the applicable fastener.
  • Use the torque wrench to tighten the control arm pivot bolts to factory specification with the suspension at ride height.
  • If cam bolts are used, keep your paint marks aligned as close as possible.
  • Final torque at ride height prevents bushing preload.

Step 8: Reinstall any removed sway bar hardware

  • Use the correct metric socket and wrench to reinstall the sway bar end link.
  • Tighten the nut to factory specification.

Step 9: Reinstall the wheel and lower the truck

  • Reinstall the wheel and hand-tighten the lug nuts.
  • Lower the truck to the ground.
  • Use a torque wrench to tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern to factory specification.

✅ After Repair

  • Turn the steering wheel lock-to-lock and check for binding or noise.
  • Inspect the control arm area for any loose fasteners or shifted brake lines.
  • Test drive slowly first, then recheck for unusual steering pull or clunks.
  • Schedule a four-wheel alignment as soon as possible.
