🔧 Sierra 1500 - Front Control Arm Replacement

Assumption: This covers the front upper and lower control arms on your Sierra.

The control arms locate the front wheel and suspension. Replacing them restores tight steering, proper alignment, and eliminates clunks or torn bushings and ball joints. This job is best followed by a professional alignment after the repair.

Difficulty Level: Advanced | Estimated Time: 4-6 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Support the truck securely with jack stands before removing any suspension parts.
  • Keep hands clear of the spring and steering knuckle area while components are unbolted.
  • Use a spring-safe stance when separating the control arm from the knuckle.
  • Do not final-torque rubber-bushed control arm bolts with the suspension hanging; they must be tightened at ride height.
  • An alignment is required after this repair.

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Chock the rear wheels.
  • Loosen the front lug nuts before lifting the truck.
  • Raise the front end and support it securely on jack stands.
  • Remove the front wheels.
  • Spray fasteners ahead of time.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the wheel and inspect the suspension

  • Use the lug wrench or socket to remove the front wheel.
  • Inspect the control arm, ball joint, and bushings so you know what is being replaced.

Step 2: Support the suspension

  • Use a floor jack under the lower control arm or under the knuckle area to lightly support the suspension.
  • This keeps parts from dropping when fasteners are removed.

Step 3: Separate the control arm from the steering knuckle

  • Use the correct metric socket and wrench to remove the ball joint nut.
  • Use a ball joint separator to release the taper from the knuckle.
  • If needed, tap the knuckle boss lightly with a hammer to help the taper pop loose.
  • Do not hit the ball joint stud directly.

Step 4: Remove the control arm pivot bolts

  • Use the correct metric socket and breaker bar to remove the inner control arm bolts.
  • Mark bolt positions with a paint marker before removal if the hardware is eccentric or slotted.
  • Remove the control arm from the frame once all fasteners are out.

Step 5: Install the new control arm

  • Position the new control arm in the frame mounts by hand.
  • Install the inner bolts and nuts finger-tight first.
  • Use the metric socket and wrench to reconnect the ball joint to the steering knuckle.
  • Torque all fasteners to OEM factory specification.

Step 6: Final-torque at ride height

  • Lower the truck so the suspension is loaded at normal ride height.
  • Use the torque wrench to final-tighten the control arm pivot bolts at ride height.
  • Torque to OEM factory specification.

Step 7: Reinstall the wheel

  • Install the wheel and hand-tighten the lug nuts.
  • Lower the truck fully and torque the lug nuts with the torque wrench to factory spec.

✅ After Repair

  • Check that the suspension moves freely with no binding.
  • Verify all fasteners are tight.
  • Test drive slowly and listen for clunks or pulling.
  • Get a professional wheel alignment right away.
