🔧 Grand Cherokee - Front Brake Pad & Rotor Replacement
This repair replaces the front brake pads and front brake rotors on your Grand Cherokee. Worn pads or warped rotors can cause squealing, vibration, longer stopping distance, or brake pedal pulsation.
Difficulty Level: Beginner/Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2-3 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Work on a flat, solid surface and never rely on a jack alone.
- ⚠️ Use jack stands before putting your hands near the brakes.
- ⚠️ Wear safety glasses and gloves; brake dust and rust can irritate skin and eyes.
- ⚠️ Do not press the brake pedal while the caliper is removed.
- ⚠️ Keep brake grease off the pad friction surface and rotor face.
- ⚠️ If brake fluid overflows while compressing the caliper pistons, clean it immediately because it damages paint.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for the front brakes on your Grand Cherokee.

📋 Before You Begin
- 🚗 Park your Grand Cherokee on level ground.
- 🚗 Shift to Park and apply the parking brake.
- 🚗 Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
- 🚗 Open the hood and locate the brake fluid reservoir.
- 🚗 If the brake fluid is near the MAX line, remove a small amount with a clean suction tool before compressing the caliper pistons.
- 🚗 A brake caliper piston compressor tool pushes the brake pistons back into the caliper so the new, thicker pads fit.
- 🚗 No infotainment menu, scan tool, EPB retraction, or battery disconnect is needed for front brake pad and rotor replacement.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Loosen the Front Lug Nuts
- Use a 22mm lug nut socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to loosen each front wheel lug nut about 1/2 turn.
- Do this while the tires are still on the ground so the wheels do not spin.
- Do not remove them yet.
Step 2: Raise and Support the Front
- Use a floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to lift the front of your Grand Cherokee at the front center jacking point or approved frame lift area.
- Place jack stands rated 3-ton minimum under the approved front support points.
- Lower the vehicle gently onto the jack stands.
- Lightly shake the vehicle to confirm it is stable.
Step 3: Remove the Front Wheels
- Use the 22mm lug nut socket and 1/2-inch drive ratchet to remove the loosened lug nuts.
- Remove both front wheels and place them flat under the vehicle as a backup safety measure.
Step 4: Inspect the Brake Assembly
- Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
- Look at how the pads, caliper, clips, and rotor are positioned before removal.
- Use a phone to take a photo for reference.
- A caliper is the clamp-like brake part that squeezes the pads against the rotor.
Step 5: Remove the Caliper Slide Pin Bolts
- Use a 13mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to remove the two caliper slide pin bolts from the rear of the caliper.
- Hold the slide pin steady with a wrench if it spins while loosening.
- Slide pins let the caliper move evenly as the brakes apply.
Step 6: Remove and Support the Caliper
- Use a flat-blade screwdriver to gently pry the caliper away from the rotor if it is snug.
- Lift the caliper off the bracket.
- Use a bungee cord to hang the caliper from the suspension spring or upper control arm.
- Do not let the caliper hang by the rubber brake hose.
Step 7: Remove the Old Brake Pads
- Pull the old brake pads out of the caliper bracket by hand.
- Use a flat-blade screwdriver if the pads are stuck in the hardware clips.
- Note which pad was on the inside and outside.
Step 8: Remove the Caliper Bracket
- Use a 21mm socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to loosen the two caliper bracket bolts.
- Remove the bolts with a 1/2-inch drive ratchet.
- Lift the caliper bracket away from the steering knuckle.
- The steering knuckle is the heavy metal part the wheel hub and brake bracket attach to.
Step 9: Remove the Old Rotor
- Pull the rotor straight off the wheel hub by hand.
- If it is stuck from rust, tap the rotor hat area with a rubber mallet.
- Do not hit the wheel studs directly.
- Rust can hold the rotor tightly.
Step 10: Clean the Hub Face
- Use a wire brush to clean rust from the wheel hub face.
- Use brake cleaner spray and shop towels to wipe the hub clean.
- The new rotor must sit flat, or you may feel vibration while braking.
Step 11: Install the New Rotor
- Spray both sides of the new rotor with brake cleaner spray and wipe with shop towels.
- Slide the rotor onto the wheel studs by hand.
- Thread one lug nut on by hand to hold the rotor flat while you work.
Step 12: Service the Caliper Bracket
- Use a flat-blade screwdriver to remove the old brake hardware clips from the caliper bracket.
- Use a wire brush to clean the clip mounting areas.
- Install the new clips from the front brake hardware kit by hand.
- Apply a thin layer of brake grease where the pad ears touch the clips.
- Do not put grease on the rotor or pad friction material.
Step 13: Reinstall the Caliper Bracket
- Position the caliper bracket over the rotor.
- Start both caliper bracket bolts by hand to avoid cross-threading.
- Use a 21mm socket and 1/2-inch drive torque wrench to tighten the bracket bolts.
- Torque to 175 Nm (129 ft-lbs)
Step 14: Compress the Caliper Pistons
- Place one old brake pad against the caliper pistons.
- Use a brake caliper piston compressor tool to slowly push the pistons fully into the caliper.
- Watch the brake fluid reservoir under the hood while compressing.
- If fluid rises too high, stop and remove a small amount before continuing.
- Go slow to protect seals.
Step 15: Install the New Brake Pads
- Apply a thin coat of brake grease to the pad ears only.
- Install the new inner and outer pads into the caliper bracket by hand.
- Make sure the pads slide freely in the hardware clips.
- Do not touch the pad friction surface with greasy gloves.
Step 16: Reinstall the Caliper
- Remove the bungee cord and lower the caliper over the new pads.
- Start both caliper slide pin bolts by hand.
- Use a 13mm socket and 3/8-inch drive torque wrench to tighten the slide pin bolts.
- Torque to 31 Nm (23 ft-lbs)
Step 17: Repeat on the Other Front Side
- Use the same tools and repeat Steps 5-16 on the other front brake assembly.
- Always replace front brake pads and rotors in pairs.
Step 18: Reinstall the Wheels
- Remove the temporary lug nut holding each rotor.
- Install each wheel onto the hub.
- Thread all lug nuts by hand first.
- Use a 22mm lug nut socket and 1/2-inch drive ratchet to snug the lug nuts in a star pattern.
Step 19: Lower and Torque the Wheels
- Use the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to lift slightly and remove the jack stands rated 3-ton minimum.
- Lower your Grand Cherokee until the tires touch the ground.
- Use a 22mm lug nut socket and 1/2-inch drive torque wrench to tighten lug nuts in a star pattern.
- Torque to 176 Nm (130 ft-lbs)
Step 20: Pump the Brake Pedal
- Before driving, press the brake pedal slowly several times until it feels firm.
- This moves the caliper pistons back against the new pads.
- If the pedal stays soft or sinks, do not drive.
✅ After Repair
- ✅ Check the brake fluid level and set it between MIN and MAX if needed.
- ✅ Start the engine and press the brake pedal again; it should feel firm.
- ✅ Test the brakes at very low speed in a safe area before normal driving.
- ✅ Bed in the new pads if the pad manufacturer recommends it.
- ✅ A common bedding method is 5-8 moderate stops from about 35 mph to 5 mph, allowing time between stops to cool.
- ✅ Avoid hard braking for the first 200 miles unless needed for safety.
- ✅ Recheck lug nut torque after 25-50 miles.
