🔧 Insight - Front Brake Pads & Rotor Replacement

You’ll remove the front wheels, unbolt the brake caliper and bracket, replace the rotor, then install new pads and reassemble. Front brakes wear over time, and replacing pads with worn rotors can cause noise, vibration, and longer stopping distances.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2-4 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Support your Insight with jack stands—never rely on a jack alone.
  • ⚠️ Keep the car OFF and the key/fob at least 10 ft away to prevent the hybrid system from waking up.
  • ⚠️ Do not let the caliper hang by the brake hose—support it with a hanger.
  • ⚠️ Avoid getting grease or brake fluid on pad/rotor friction surfaces.
  • ⚠️ Brake dust is harmful—use brake cleaner, not compressed air.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 2-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 2-ton minimum, pair)
  • Wheel chocks
  • 19mm socket
  • 3/8" drive ratchet
  • 1/2" drive breaker bar
  • 12mm socket
  • 17mm socket
  • Torque wrench (20-150 ft-lbs range)
  • Flat-blade screwdriver
  • C-clamp (6" minimum) or disc brake piston tool (specialty)
  • Bungee cord or caliper hanger
  • Wire brush
  • Rubber mallet
  • Impact screwdriver with #3 Phillips bit (specialty)
  • Brake cleaner
  • Shop towels
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Front brake pad set - Qty: 1
  • Front brake rotors - Qty: 2
  • Front brake pad hardware kit (abutment clips) - Qty: 1
  • Brake caliper slide pin grease (silicone) - Qty: 1
  • Brake parts cleaner - Qty: 1
  • Brake fluid (DOT 3) - Qty: 1 quart

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, turn the car OFF, and set the parking brake.
  • Chock the rear wheels using wheel chocks.
  • Crack the front lug nuts loose 1/4 turn using a 19mm socket and breaker bar before lifting.
  • Open the hood and check the brake fluid reservoir level. If it’s near MAX, remove a little with a suction tool (or towel-wick carefully) so it doesn’t overflow when you push pistons back.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Lift and secure the front end

  • Lift the front using a floor jack (rated 2-ton minimum) at the front center jack point.
  • Set the car on jack stands (rated 2-ton minimum, pair) at the pinch welds.
  • Remove both front wheels with a 19mm socket and ratchet.

Step 2: Remove the front brake caliper

  • Turn the steering wheel to give yourself room (left for right side work, right for left side work).
  • Remove the two caliper slide pin bolts using a 12mm socket and ratchet.
  • Lift the caliper off the bracket and support it with a bungee cord or caliper hanger.
  • Don’t twist or stretch the hose.

Step 3: Remove pads and inspect hardware

  • Pull the inner and outer pads out by hand. Use a flat-blade screwdriver gently if they’re stuck.
  • Remove the stainless pad clips/abutment clips from the bracket.
  • Clean the bracket pad lands using brake cleaner, shop towels, and a wire brush.

Step 4: Remove the caliper bracket

  • Remove the two bracket bolts using a 17mm socket and breaker bar.
  • Set the bracket aside.
  • On reassembly: Torque to 108 Nm (80 ft-lbs).

Step 5: Remove the rotor

  • If your rotor has retaining screws, remove them using an impact screwdriver with #3 Phillips bit (specialty).
  • Pull the rotor off the hub. If stuck, tap the rotor hat with a rubber mallet to break rust loose.
  • Clean the hub face with a wire brush and wipe with brake cleaner.

Step 6: Install the new rotor

  • Spray both sides of the new rotor with brake cleaner and wipe with shop towels (removes packing oil).
  • Place the new rotor onto the hub. If you removed retaining screws, reinstall them using the impact screwdriver with #3 Phillips bit (specialty) (snug them—do not over-tighten).

Step 7: Service the slide pins and reinstall the bracket

  • Pull the slide pins out of the bracket by hand.
  • Wipe old grease off and apply a thin coat of brake caliper slide pin grease (silicone).
  • Reinstall the bracket and tighten bolts using a 17mm socket and torque wrench: Torque to 108 Nm (80 ft-lbs).

Step 8: Install new pad hardware and pads

  • Install new abutment clips onto the bracket.
  • Apply a very light film of brake caliper slide pin grease (silicone) where the pad ears contact the clips (keep grease off pad friction material).
  • Install the new pads into the bracket by hand.

Step 9: Compress the caliper piston

  • Place the old inner pad against the piston face, then compress the piston using a C-clamp (6" minimum) or disc brake piston tool (specialty).
  • Go slowly and watch the brake fluid reservoir so it doesn’t overflow.

Step 10: Reinstall the caliper

  • Place the caliper over the new pads.
  • Install and tighten the caliper slide pin bolts using a 12mm socket and torque wrench: Torque to 34 Nm (25 ft-lbs).
  • Double-check the brake hose routing and that the caliper moves freely on the slide pins.

Step 11: Reinstall wheels

  • Reinstall the wheels and hand-thread lug nuts.
  • Lower the car off the jack stands (rated 2-ton minimum, pair) using the floor jack (rated 2-ton minimum).
  • Tighten lug nuts in a star pattern using a torque wrench: Torque to 108 Nm (80 ft-lbs).

✅ After Repair

  • Before moving the car, pump the brake pedal 10–15 times until it feels firm.
  • Check the brake fluid level and top off with DOT 3 if needed (do not overfill).
  • Do a cautious test drive: confirm normal stopping, no pulling, and no grinding noises.
  • Pad/rotor bed-in: make 6–10 moderate stops from 35–10 mph, with cool-down driving between stops. Avoid hard stops for 200 miles.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost
