🔧 RX350 - Front Brake Pads & Rotor Replacement

You’ll remove the front wheels, take the brake calipers and brackets off, replace the rotors, then install new pads and reassemble. This restores braking performance and prevents pulsation (steering wheel shake) caused by warped or worn rotors.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2-4 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • 🛑 Work on level ground and support the RX350 with jack stands—never rely on a jack alone.
  • 🛑 Brakes may contain fine dust—avoid blowing with compressed air; use brake cleaner.
  • 🛑 Do not let the caliper hang by the brake hose—support it with a hook or bungee cord.
  • 🛑 Keep grease off pad/rotor friction surfaces; clean with brake cleaner if contaminated.
  • 🛑 Watch brake fluid level—pushing pistons in can overflow the reservoir.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks
  • 21mm socket
  • 1/2" drive breaker bar
  • 1/2" drive torque wrench (20-200 ft-lbs range)
  • 17mm socket
  • 14mm socket
  • Ratchet (3/8" or 1/2")
  • Needle-nose pliers
  • C-clamp (6" or larger)
  • Wire brush
  • Rubber mallet
  • Bungee cord or brake caliper hook
  • Brake cleaner spray
  • Shop rags
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Front brake pad set - Qty: 1
  • Front brake rotors - Qty: 2
  • Front pad hardware kit (clips/shims, if not included with pads) - Qty: 1
  • Brake caliper grease (silicone brake lubricant) - Qty: 1
  • Brake cleaner - Qty: 1-2 cans

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
  • Crack the front lug nuts loose 1/2 turn using a 21mm socket and breaker bar before lifting.
  • Open the hood and check the brake fluid reservoir level; if it’s near “MAX,” remove a little with a clean rag to prevent overflow when compressing pistons.
  • “Caliper” squeezes pads; “bracket” holds pads.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Lift the front and remove the wheels

  • Lift the front using a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) at the proper front jacking point.
  • Support both sides with jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum).
  • Remove the lug nuts using a 21mm socket and ratchet, then remove both front wheels.

Step 2: Access the caliper and check pad/rotor setup

  • Turn the steering left/right by hand (with key on if needed) to give yourself working room, then key off.
  • Look for pad wear hardware and note how the clips/shims sit so you can reinstall the same way.

Step 3: Remove the caliper (do not disconnect the brake hose)

  • Remove the caliper slide pin bolts using a 14mm socket and ratchet.
  • Lift the caliper off the pads and support it using a bungee cord or brake caliper hook.
  • Torque spec (reinstall): Torque to 34 Nm (25 ft-lbs)

Step 4: Remove the old pads and hardware

  • Pull the pads out of the bracket by hand; use needle-nose pliers if they’re tight.
  • Remove the pad hardware/clips from the bracket (they usually snap in/out).
  • Clean the bracket pad “rails” (where the clips sit) using a wire brush and brake cleaner spray.
  • Clean rails help prevent squeaks and sticking.

Step 5: Remove the caliper bracket

  • Remove the two bracket-to-knuckle bolts using a 17mm socket and breaker bar.
  • Set the bracket aside on a clean surface.
  • Torque spec (reinstall): Torque to 123 Nm (91 ft-lbs)

Step 6: Remove the old rotor

  • Pull the rotor straight off the hub by hand.
  • If it’s stuck from rust, tap around the rotor “hat” area using a rubber mallet (do not hit the wheel studs).
  • Clean the hub face with a wire brush, then spray with brake cleaner spray and wipe with shop rags.

Step 7: Install the new rotor

  • Clean the new rotor friction surfaces using brake cleaner spray and shop rags (removes protective oil).
  • Install the new rotor onto the hub.
  • To hold it in place while you work, thread on one lug nut backwards by hand (optional) using no tools.

Step 8: Prep the caliper bracket and install new hardware

  • Install the new pad clips/hardware into the bracket by hand.
  • Apply a very thin film of brake caliper grease to the clip contact points (where pad “ears” slide), keeping grease off rotor/pad friction surfaces.
  • Reinstall the bracket using a 17mm socket and torque wrench.
  • Torque to 123 Nm (91 ft-lbs)

Step 9: Compress the caliper piston

  • Place one old pad against the piston face, then use a C-clamp (6" or larger) to slowly push the piston fully back into the caliper.
  • Go slowly and check the brake fluid reservoir so it doesn’t overflow.
  • Slow compression helps protect seals.

Step 10: Install the new pads

  • Install the inner and outer pads into the bracket by hand.
  • If your pad set includes shims, install them exactly as provided for your RX350.

Step 11: Reinstall the caliper

  • Lower the caliper over the new pads.
  • Install the slide pin bolts using a 14mm socket and ratchet, then finish with a torque wrench.
  • Torque to 34 Nm (25 ft-lbs)

Step 12: Reinstall wheels and torque lug nuts

  • Reinstall both front wheels and hand-thread lug nuts.
  • Lower the RX350 to the ground using the floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum).
  • Tighten lug nuts in a star pattern using a 21mm socket and torque wrench.
  • Torque to 140 Nm (103 ft-lbs)

✅ After Repair

  • With the engine off, pump the brake pedal 10-15 times until it feels firm (this seats the pistons against the new pads).
  • Check brake fluid level and top off only if needed (use the correct DOT brake fluid listed on the reservoir cap).
  • Test at low speed first: confirm normal pedal feel and no pulling/noise.
  • Brake bed-in (simple): do 6-8 medium stops from ~40 mph down to ~10 mph, with 30-60 seconds of driving between stops to cool. Avoid hard stops for the first 150-200 miles.
  • Recheck lug nut torque after 25-50 miles using a torque wrench.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $450-$900 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $160-$420 (parts only)

You Save: $290-$480 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 2-3 hours.
