🔧 Sonata - Front Brake Pads & Rotor Replacement

You’ll remove the front wheels, take off the brake caliper and bracket, replace the rotor, then install new pads and reassemble everything. This restores safe stopping power and prevents vibration or grinding caused by worn pads/warped rotors.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2-4 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Work on level ground and chock the rear wheels so the car can’t roll.
  • ⚠️ Support the car with jack stands; never rely on a floor jack alone.
  • ⚠️ Do not let the caliper hang by the brake hose; it can damage the hose.
  • ⚠️ Avoid breathing brake dust; use brake cleaner and wear a mask.
  • ⚠️ Keep grease and brake fluid off the pad/rotor friction surfaces.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks
  • Lug wrench or 21mm socket
  • Ratchet (3/8" drive)
  • Breaker bar (1/2" drive)
  • Socket set including 14mm socket and 17mm socket
  • Torque wrench (10–150 ft-lbs range)
  • C-clamp brake piston compressor
  • Flat blade screwdriver
  • Wire brush
  • Rubber mallet
  • #3 Phillips screwdriver or impact driver
  • Bungee cord or mechanics wire
  • Brake parts cleaner
  • Shop towels
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Front brake pad set - Qty: 1
  • Front brake rotors - Qty: 2
  • Brake caliper hardware kit (clips) - Qty: 1
  • Brake grease (silicone or ceramic) - Qty: 1
  • Brake fluid (DOT 3 / DOT 4 compatible) - Qty: 1 quart

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on a level surface, put the shifter in Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Chock both rear wheels.
  • Loosen the front lug nuts slightly using a 21mm socket before lifting the car.
  • Open the hood and locate the brake fluid reservoir; leave the cap loosely set on top (do not remove it completely). This helps the fluid move when you compress the piston.
  • Assumption: Common U.S. 2016 Sonata front caliper uses 14mm slide-pin bolts and 17mm bracket bolts; torque specs below reflect typical OEM ranges for this setup.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Lift and secure the front end

  • Use a floor jack to lift the front of the car at the front jacking point.
  • Place jack stands under the proper support points and lower the car onto them.
  • Give the car a gentle push to confirm it’s stable before working.

Step 2: Remove the front wheels

  • Remove the lug nuts using a 21mm socket and take both front wheels off.
  • Slide the wheels under the rocker area as an extra safety backup.

Step 3: Remove the brake caliper (the clamp that holds pads)

  • Turn the steering wheel to give yourself more working room on the side you’re starting with.
  • Use a flat blade screwdriver to gently pry the caliper outward a tiny bit to create slack (don’t gouge the rotor).
  • Remove the caliper slide-pin bolts using a 14mm socket.
  • Lift the caliper off the bracket and hang it with a bungee cord or mechanics wire so the hose is not supporting the weight.
  • Slide pins are the two bolts/pins that let the caliper move in and out.

Step 4: Remove the old pads and hardware clips

  • Pull the brake pads out of the bracket by hand.
  • Remove the stainless hardware clips using a flat blade screwdriver.
  • Clean the pad “shelves” (where clips sit) using a wire brush and brake parts cleaner.

Step 5: Remove the caliper bracket

  • Remove the two bracket bolts using a 17mm socket and a breaker bar.
  • Set the bracket aside on a clean surface.
  • When reinstalling later: Torque to 78–88 Nm (58–65 ft-lbs)

Step 6: Remove the old rotor

  • If your rotor has retaining screws, remove them using a #3 Phillips screwdriver or impact driver.
  • Pull the rotor straight off the hub. If it’s stuck, tap the rotor hat with a rubber mallet to break rust free.
  • Clean the hub face with a wire brush and spray with brake parts cleaner so the new rotor sits flat.
  • A flat hub prevents steering-wheel shake.

Step 7: Install the new rotor

  • Spray both sides of the new rotor with brake parts cleaner and wipe with shop towels to remove shipping oil.
  • Place the rotor onto the hub. If there were retaining screws, reinstall them using a #3 Phillips screwdriver (snug only).

Step 8: Service the slide pins (smooth caliper movement)

  • Pull the slide pins out of the bracket by hand.
  • Wipe old grease off using shop towels.
  • Apply a thin coat of brake grease to each pin and reinstall them.
  • Use brake grease only—never petroleum grease.

Step 9: Install new hardware clips and pads

  • Install the new hardware clips into the bracket by hand (they should “snap” in place).
  • Apply a very thin film of brake grease where the pad ears touch the clips (metal-to-metal contact points only).
  • Slide the new pads into the bracket.

Step 10: Reinstall the caliper bracket

  • Position the bracket over the rotor and start both bolts by hand to avoid cross-threading.
  • Tighten using a 17mm socket.
  • Torque to 78–88 Nm (58–65 ft-lbs)

Step 11: Compress the caliper piston

  • Place an old brake pad against the caliper piston face.
  • Use a C-clamp brake piston compressor to slowly press the piston back into the caliper.
  • Watch the brake fluid reservoir while compressing; if it gets too full, remove a little fluid with a suction tool (do not spill on paint).
  • Go slow to avoid damaging the piston seal.

Step 12: Reinstall the caliper

  • Place the caliper over the new pads and align it with the slide pin holes.
  • Install the slide-pin bolts using a 14mm socket.
  • Torque to 24–29 Nm (18–21 ft-lbs)

Step 13: Repeat on the other front side

  • Do the same pad/rotor replacement steps on the other front wheel.
  • Front brakes should be replaced as a pair.

Step 14: Reinstall wheels and torque lug nuts

  • Install the wheels and hand-thread all lug nuts.
  • Lower the car off the stands using the floor jack.
  • Tighten lug nuts in a star pattern using a torque wrench.
  • Torque to 88–108 Nm (65–80 ft-lbs)

✅ After Repair

  • Press the brake pedal slowly 10–15 times before driving until it feels firm. This seats the pads against the rotors.
  • Check brake fluid level and top off with DOT 3 / DOT 4 compatible fluid if needed.
  • Start the engine and confirm the pedal remains firm.
  • Do a cautious test drive at low speed and verify there are no clunks, pulling, or grinding.
  • Pad bed-in (recommended): 6–10 moderate stops from 35–10 mph, letting brakes cool a bit between stops. Avoid hard panic stops for the first 150–200 miles.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $450-$850 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $160-$380 (parts only)

You Save: $290-$470 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 1.8-2.5 hours.
