🔧 Q50 - Front Brake Pads & Rotor Replacement
You’ll remove the front wheels, unbolt the front brake calipers, replace the pads and rotors, then reassemble and torque everything correctly. This restores safe stopping power and prevents vibration/pulsation from worn or warped rotors.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2-4 hours
Assumption: standard single-piston front calipers (stock).
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Support the car with jack stands; never rely on a jack alone.
- ⚠️ Brakes may be hot; let components cool before touching.
- ⚠️ Do not inhale brake dust; use brake cleaner and wear a dust mask.
- ⚠️ Do not let the caliper hang by the brake hose; support it with a bungee cord.
- ⚠️ Keep brake fluid off paint; it can damage the finish.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for front brakes on your Q50.

🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Front brake pad set - Qty: 1
- Front brake rotors - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2
- Front pad hardware kit (clips/shims) - Qty: 1
- Brake caliper slide pin grease (silicone) - Qty: 1
- Brake parts cleaner - Qty: 1
- DOT 3 brake fluid - Qty: 1 quart
- Anti-seize compound - Qty: 1
📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
- Loosen the front lug nuts 1/2 turn using a 21mm socket and breaker bar before lifting.
- Open the hood and locate the brake fluid reservoir. Remove the cap and set it loosely on top.
- Place a rag around the reservoir area. Fluid may rise when you compress the caliper piston.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Lift and secure the front
- Lift the front of the car using a floor jack at the proper front jack point.
- Set the car onto jack stands and give it a gentle shake to confirm it’s stable.
- Remove the lug nuts using a 21mm socket and ratchet, then remove both front wheels.
Step 2: Inspect and prep the caliper
- Turn the steering knuckle for access (turn the rotor by hand), or use a breaker bar carefully on the steering if needed.
- Check the brake hose routing and note how the pad hardware sits.
- Spray the caliper and bracket area with brake cleaner spray and let it drip into a catch pan.
Step 3: Remove the caliper (do not disconnect the hose)
- Remove the two caliper slide pin bolts using a ratchet and metric socket (commonly 14mm).
- Lift the caliper off the bracket. If it’s tight, gently pry with a flathead screwdriver.
- Support the caliper with a caliper hanger hook or bungee cord.
- Slide pins are the bolts the caliper “slides” on.
Step 4: Remove old pads and hardware
- Pull the old brake pads out by hand.
- Remove the stainless pad clips/hardware using a small pick tool or flathead screwdriver.
- Clean the bracket pad “lands” (where clips sit) using a wire brush and brake cleaner spray.
Step 5: Remove the caliper bracket
- Remove the two caliper bracket bolts using a breaker bar and metric socket (commonly 19mm).
- Set the bracket aside on a clean surface.
- When reinstalling: Torque to 108 Nm (80 ft-lbs).
Step 6: Remove the rotor
- Pull the rotor off the hub. If it’s stuck, tap the rotor hat with a rubber mallet evenly around the center.
- If rust is heavy, apply a small amount of penetrating oil (if available) and wait a minute, then try again with the rubber mallet.
Step 7: Clean the hub face and install the new rotor
- Clean the hub face (where the rotor sits) using a wire brush until it’s smooth.
- Apply a very thin smear of anti-seize compound to the hub face (avoid getting any on the wheel studs).
- Clean the new rotor with brake cleaner spray to remove shipping oil.
- Install the new rotor. To keep it from wobbling, temporarily hand-thread 1-2 lug nuts (use the old ones) and snug them with a 21mm socket.
Step 8: Service slide pins and reinstall the bracket
- Pull the slide pins out of the bracket by hand.
- Wipe old grease off using a shop towel (use nitrile gloves).
- Apply fresh brake caliper slide pin grease (silicone) and reinstall the pins.
- Slide pin grease prevents sticking and uneven pad wear.
- Reinstall the caliper bracket and tighten bolts using a ratchet and metric socket.
- Torque to 108 Nm (80 ft-lbs) using a 1/2" torque wrench.
Step 9: Install new hardware and pads
- Install the new pad clips/hardware into the bracket.
- Apply a tiny amount of brake caliper slide pin grease (silicone) to pad contact points on the clips (not on the rotor).
- Install the new pads into the bracket.
Step 10: Compress the caliper piston
- Place one old brake pad against the caliper piston face.
- Use a C-clamp 6" to slowly press the piston fully back into the caliper.
- Watch the brake fluid reservoir while compressing; remove excess fluid if it gets too high using the catch pan.
- Go slow to avoid overflowing brake fluid.
Step 11: Reinstall the caliper
- Place the caliper over the new pads and align the slide pin bolt holes.
- Install the caliper slide pin bolts using a ratchet and metric socket.
- Torque to 32 Nm (24 ft-lbs) using a 3/8" torque wrench.
Step 12: Reinstall wheels and torque lug nuts
- Reinstall the wheels and hand-thread all lug nuts.
- Lower the car off the jack stands using the floor jack.
- Tighten lug nuts in a star pattern using a 1/2" torque wrench.
- Torque to 113 Nm (83 ft-lbs).
Step 13: Restore brake pedal feel
- With the engine OFF, press the brake pedal 10-15 times until it feels firm.
- Check brake fluid level and top off with DOT 3 brake fluid if needed.
- Reinstall the reservoir cap securely.
✅ After Repair
- Start the engine and confirm the brake pedal stays firm.
- Do a slow test in a safe area: confirm the car stops straight and there are no grinding noises.
- Bed-in (break-in) the pads: do 6-10 medium stops from 40 mph to 10 mph, with 30-60 seconds between stops.
- Recheck brake fluid level after the test drive.
- Look for leaks around the calipers and confirm both front wheels spin freely when lifted (no dragging).
