  • Park on a level surface, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Place wheel chocks behind the rear tires.
  • Loosen the front lug nuts 1/2 turn using a 21mm socket and breaker bar before lifting.
  • Open the hood and check the brake fluid level; when you compress the pistons, the level will rise. If it’s very full, remove a little with shop towels as needed. Don’t overflow the reservoir.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Lift and secure the front end

  • Lift the front with a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) at the front jacking point.
  • Set the frame onto jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum) and gently shake the truck to confirm it’s stable.

Step 2: Remove the front wheels

  • Remove lug nuts with a 21mm socket and ratchet (1/2" drive).
  • Set wheels aside. Slide them under the frame as a backup.

Step 3: Remove the caliper (do not let it hang)

  • Turn the steering wheel to give yourself more room at the side you’re working on.
  • Remove the caliper slide bolts using a 14mm socket and ratchet (3/8" drive).
  • Lift the caliper off the pads/rotor and hang it using a wire hook or bungee cord.
  • Never hang the caliper by the hose.

Step 4: Remove the caliper bracket

  • Remove the caliper bracket bolts using a 17mm socket, breaker bar, and socket extension (3" to 6").
  • Set the bracket on a clean surface.
  • When reinstalling later: Torque to 123 Nm (91 ft-lbs).

Step 5: Remove the old rotor

  • If the rotor is stuck, tap around the rotor “hat” (center area) with a dead blow hammer.
  • If it’s still stuck, thread two M8 x 1.25 bolts (2 pack) into the rotor’s push-off holes evenly and tighten with a ratchet (3/8" drive) until the rotor pops loose.
  • Remove the rotor.

Step 6: Clean and prep the hub surface

  • Clean rust from the hub face using a wire brush.
  • Spray the area with brake cleaner spray and wipe with shop towels.
  • A clean hub helps prevent brake vibration.

Step 7: Install the new rotor

  • Clean the new rotor with brake cleaner spray and shop towels to remove protective oil.
  • Install the rotor onto the hub.
  • To keep it from wobbling while you work, temporarily install 1-2 lug nuts by hand.

Step 8: Service the bracket and install new hardware

  • Remove old pad clips from the bracket using a small flathead screwdriver.
  • Clean the bracket pad “slides” where the clips sit using a wire brush and brake cleaner spray.
  • Install the new hardware clips (from the hardware kit) by hand.
  • Apply a very thin layer of high-temp silicone brake grease where the pads contact the clips. Keep grease off rotor/pad friction.

Step 9: Reinstall the caliper bracket

  • Install the bracket bolts by hand first, then tighten using a 17mm socket, ratchet (1/2" drive), and torque wrench (30-200 ft-lbs range).
  • Torque to 123 Nm (91 ft-lbs).

Step 10: Compress the caliper pistons

  • Place an old pad against the pistons, then compress slowly using a C-clamp brake piston compressor.
  • Go slowly and watch the brake fluid reservoir as the level rises.
  • Slow compression helps protect seals.

Step 11: Install the new pads

  • Install the new pads into the bracket by hand.
  • If your pads include shims, install them exactly as provided with the pad set.
  • Use needle-nose pliers if you need help positioning any pad spring clips.

Step 12: Reinstall the caliper

  • Lower the caliper over the new pads/rotor.
  • Install the slide bolts using a 14mm socket and torque wrench (30-200 ft-lbs range).
  • Torque to 34 Nm (25 ft-lbs).

Step 13: Reinstall wheels and torque lug nuts

  • Reinstall wheels and hand-thread all lug nuts.
  • Lower the truck to the ground using a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum).
  • Tighten lug nuts in a star pattern using a 21mm socket and torque wrench (30-200 ft-lbs range).
  • Torque to 131 Nm (97 ft-lbs).

âś… After Repair

  • Before moving, pump the brake pedal 10-15 times until it feels firm. This seats the pads.
  • Check the brake fluid level and top off with DOT 3 only if needed.
  • Test drive at low speed first. Confirm no pulling, grinding, or warning lights.
  • Pad bedding (recommended): make 8-10 moderate stops from ~40 mph to ~10 mph, then drive a few minutes to cool.
  • Recheck lug nut torque after 25-50 miles using a torque wrench (30-200 ft-lbs range).
