- Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- Chock the rear wheels with wheel chocks.
- Crack the front lug nuts loose 1/4 turn using a 21mm socket and breaker bar before lifting.
- Open the hood and locate the brake fluid reservoir; you’ll watch the fluid level when compressing the caliper piston.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Lift and secure the front end
- Lift the front using a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) at the correct front jacking point.
- Set the CX-50 down onto jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum).
- Give the vehicle a gentle push to confirm it’s stable.
Step 2: Remove the front wheels
- Remove lug nuts using a 21mm socket and ratchet.
- Remove both front wheels and set them aside.
Step 3: Locate the caliper and remove the slide pin bolts
- Turn the steering wheel to give yourself more room (left for right side work, right for left side work).
- Remove the 2 caliper slide pin bolts using a 14mm socket and ratchet.
- Don’t let the caliper hang by the hose.
Step 4: Support the caliper
- Lift the caliper off the bracket.
- Hang the caliper from the suspension spring/strut using a bungee cord.
Step 5: Remove old pads and hardware
- Slide the old inner and outer pads out of the bracket by hand.
- Remove the stainless hardware/abutment clips using a flathead screwdriver.
- Clean the pad bracket contact areas using brake parts cleaner spray and a wire brush.
Step 6: Compress the caliper piston
- Place one old pad against the piston face.
- Slowly compress the piston using a large C-clamp until the piston is fully seated.
- Watch the brake fluid reservoir; remove a little fluid if it gets too full.
- Go slow to avoid damaging seals.
Step 7: Lube slide pins and install new hardware
- Pull each slide pin out (they’re the smooth pins the caliper bolts thread into).
- Apply a thin coat of high-temp silicone brake grease to the slide pin and reinstall it.
- Install new abutment clips (hardware) into the bracket by hand.
- Apply a very light film of high-temp silicone brake grease where pads touch the clips.
Step 8: Install the new pads
- Install the new inner and outer pads into the bracket by hand.
- If your inner pad has a wear indicator, install it in the same position as the original.
Step 9: Reinstall the caliper
- Set the caliper back over the new pads.
- Install the slide pin bolts by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
- Tighten the slide pin bolts using a 14mm socket and torque wrench: Torque to 35 Nm (26 ft-lbs).
Step 10: Reinstall wheels and torque lug nuts
- Reinstall wheels and hand-thread all lug nuts.
- Lower the CX-50 off the jack stands using the floor jack.
- Tighten lug nuts in a star pattern using a 21mm socket and torque wrench: Torque to 108 Nm (80 ft-lbs).

- With the engine OFF, pump the brake pedal 10–15 times until it feels firm. This seats the pistons against the new pads.
- Check brake fluid level in the reservoir and top off with DOT 3 if needed.
- Do a slow test drive. Start with gentle stops in a safe area.
- Pad bed-in (recommended): make 6–10 moderate stops from ~30 mph down to ~5 mph, letting brakes cool a bit between stops. Avoid hard panic stops for the first ~200 miles.
- If you hear grinding, feel pulling, or the pedal is soft, stop and recheck your work.
