🔧 Seltos - Front Brake Pad Replacement

Replacing the front brake pads restores braking power and prevents rotor damage when pads get thin. You’ll remove the front wheel, swing the caliper out of the way, swap pads and hardware, then compress the piston so everything fits back together.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.0-2.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Work on level ground and support your Seltos with jack stands before going under or pulling on parts.
  • ⚠️ Brake dust is harmful—avoid blowing it with compressed air; use brake cleaner instead.
  • ⚠️ Do not let the brake caliper hang by the rubber brake hose; support it with a hanger.
  • ⚠️ Keep brake fluid off paint; it can damage finishes.
  • ⚠️ Pump the brake pedal only after reassembly; don’t press the pedal with the caliper removed.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 2-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 2-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks
  • 21mm lug nut socket
  • Breaker bar (1/2")
  • Torque wrench (10–200 Nm range)
  • 14mm socket
  • 17mm socket
  • Ratchet (3/8" or 1/2")
  • Flathead screwdriver
  • C-clamp or brake caliper piston compressor (specialty)
  • Wire hook or bungee cord
  • Brake cleaner spray
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Front brake pad set - Qty: 1
  • Front pad hardware/clip kit - Qty: 1
  • Brake grease (silicone or synthetic caliper grease) - Qty: 1
  • Brake cleaner - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to Park, and apply the parking brake.
  • Chock the rear wheels with wheel chocks.
  • Loosen (crack) the front lug nuts 1/2 turn using a 21mm lug nut socket and breaker bar before lifting.
  • Open the hood and locate the brake fluid reservoir. If it’s near “MAX,” plan for fluid to rise when you compress the caliper piston.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Lift and secure the front of your Seltos

  • Lift the front using a floor jack at the proper front jacking point.
  • Set the vehicle onto jack stands and gently shake to confirm it’s stable.
  • Remove the wheel using a 21mm lug nut socket and ratchet.

Step 2: Access the front brake caliper

  • Turn the steering wheel to give yourself more room on the side you’re working on.
  • Inspect the caliper and note the rubber brake hose routing so you don’t twist it during reassembly.

Step 3: Remove the caliper (and support it)

  • Remove the two caliper slide-pin bolts using a 14mm socket and ratchet.
  • Carefully lift the caliper off the bracket. Use a flathead screwdriver gently if it’s tight.
  • Hang the caliper from the suspension spring using a wire hook or bungee cord.
  • Never let the caliper dangle.

Step 4: Remove old pads and hardware

  • Slide out the inner and outer pads by hand.
  • Remove the stainless pad clips/hardware from the bracket using a flathead screwdriver.
  • Spray the bracket contact areas with brake cleaner spray and wipe clean.

Step 5: Compress the caliper piston

  • Place an old pad against the piston face (helps spread force evenly).
  • Use a C-clamp or brake caliper piston compressor (specialty) to slowly press the piston back into the caliper.
  • Check the brake fluid reservoir while compressing; stop if it looks like it may overflow.
  • Go slow to protect seals.

Step 6: Install new hardware and pads

  • Install the new pad clips/hardware into the bracket by hand (press until fully seated).
  • Apply a thin film of brake grease (silicone or synthetic caliper grease) to the pad “ears” (the metal ends that slide in the clips).
  • Install the new inner and outer pads into the bracket in the same orientation as removed.

Step 7: Reinstall the caliper

  • Lower the caliper over the new pads.
  • Reinstall and tighten the caliper slide-pin bolts using a 14mm socket and ratchet.
  • Final tighten with a torque wrench: Torque to 28 Nm (21 ft-lbs).

Step 8: If you removed the caliper bracket (only if necessary)

  • If you had to remove the bracket for any reason, reinstall the bracket bolts using a 17mm socket and ratchet.
  • Final tighten with a torque wrench: Torque to 88 Nm (65 ft-lbs).

Step 9: Reinstall the wheel

  • Put the wheel back on and hand-thread the lug nuts.
  • Snug the lug nuts using a 21mm lug nut socket and ratchet.
  • Lower the vehicle off the jack stands using the floor jack.
  • Torque lug nuts in a star pattern with a torque wrench: Torque to 110 Nm (81 ft-lbs).

Step 10: Repeat on the other front wheel

  • Repeat Steps 1–9 for the other side so braking stays even.
  • Always replace pads in pairs.

✅ After Repair

  • With the engine OFF, press the brake pedal slowly 10–15 times until it feels firm (this seats the pads).
  • Check brake fluid level and top off only if needed (use the correct DOT fluid listed on the reservoir cap).
  • Do a cautious test drive: start at low speed, confirm normal stopping, and listen for unusual grinding.
  • Bed-in (break-in) the pads: make 6–10 moderate stops from ~50 km/h to 15 km/h, letting brakes cool a bit between stops.
  • Recheck lug nut torque after 50–100 km using a torque wrench: Torque to 110 Nm (81 ft-lbs).

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: ₹4,500-₹9,000 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: ₹2,000-₹5,000 (parts only)

You Save: ₹2,500-₹4,000 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary in Panipat, but this job is typically ~1.0-1.5 hours.
