🔧 CX-30 - Front Brake Pad Replacement

You’ll remove the front wheels, swing the front brake calipers open, swap in new front pads, and then reassemble everything with correct tightening. Worn pads reduce stopping power and can damage the rotors if driven too long.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.5-3.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Work on level ground and chock the rear wheels.
  • ⚠️ Never rely on a jack alone—support your CX-30 with jack stands.
  • ⚠️ Brake dust is harmful—avoid blowing it with compressed air; use brake cleaner.
  • ⚠️ Do not press the brake pedal with a caliper removed.
  • ⚠️ Keep grease off pad friction material and rotor faces.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks
  • 21mm socket
  • 1/2" drive breaker bar
  • 1/2" drive torque wrench (20-150 ft-lbs range)
  • 14mm socket
  • 17mm socket
  • 3/8" drive ratchet
  • 3/8" drive torque wrench (10-80 ft-lbs range)
  • Flathead screwdriver
  • C-clamp brake piston compressor
  • Bungee cord
  • Wire brush
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Front brake pad set - Qty: 1
  • Front brake pad hardware kit (abutment clips) - Qty: 1
  • Brake caliper slide pin grease (high-temp silicone) - Qty: 1
  • Brake parts cleaner - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on a flat surface, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Place wheel chocks behind both rear tires.
  • Loosen (crack) the front lug nuts while the tires are still on the ground using a 21mm socket and breaker bar.
  • Open the hood and locate the brake fluid reservoir; you’ll watch the fluid level as you compress the caliper pistons.
  • Take a photo before disassembly.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Lift and support the front

  • Use a floor jack to lift the front of your CX-30 at the approved front jacking point.
  • Place jack stands under the front support points and lower the vehicle onto them.
  • Give the vehicle a gentle shake to confirm it’s stable.

Step 2: Remove the front wheels

  • Remove lug nuts using a 21mm socket and ratchet.
  • Remove both front wheels and set them aside.

Step 3: Locate the front caliper and remove the slide bolts

  • Turn the steering wheel to give yourself more room to work at the caliper.
  • On the back of the caliper, remove the two slide pin bolts using a 14mm socket and ratchet.
  • Keep the bolts clean; you’ll reinstall them.

Step 4: Swing the caliper up and support it

  • Carefully pivot the caliper upward off the pads.
  • Hang the caliper from the strut spring using a bungee cord.
  • Do not let the caliper hang by the rubber brake hose.

Step 5: Remove old pads and hardware clips

  • Slide the old inner and outer pads out by hand. If stuck, gently pry with a flathead screwdriver.
  • Remove the stainless pad clips (abutment clips) from the caliper bracket.
  • Clean the bracket pad “lands” (where clips sit) using brake parts cleaner and a wire brush.

Step 6: Compress the caliper piston

  • Place an old pad against the piston face, then compress the piston slowly using a C-clamp brake piston compressor.
  • Check the brake fluid reservoir level as you compress; remove excess fluid if it approaches the max line.
  • Go slow to protect the seals.

Step 7: Service and grease the slide pins

  • Pull each slide pin out of the caliper bracket by hand (they’re the smooth pins the caliper moves on).
  • Wipe old grease off, then apply a thin, even coat of brake caliper slide pin grease.
  • Reinstall the slide pins and confirm they move smoothly.

Step 8: Install new hardware clips and new pads

  • Install the new abutment clips into the caliper bracket by hand.
  • Install the new outer pad and inner pad into the bracket.
  • Make sure the pad “ears” sit correctly in the new clips and can slide freely.

Step 9: Reinstall the caliper and tighten bolts

  • Pivot the caliper back over the new pads.
  • Reinstall the slide pin bolts using a 14mm socket.
  • Tighten slide pin bolts with a 3/8" drive torque wrench: Torque to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs)

Step 10: Repeat on the other front side

  • Repeat Steps 3 through 9 on the other front wheel.
  • Replace pads on both sides as a set to prevent pulling.

Step 11: Reinstall wheels and torque lug nuts

  • Reinstall the wheels and hand-thread lug nuts.
  • Lower your CX-30 off the jack stands using the floor jack.
  • Torque lug nuts in a star pattern using a 1/2" drive torque wrench: Torque to 108 Nm (80 ft-lbs)

Step 12: Restore pedal feel

  • With the vehicle on the ground, pump the brake pedal slowly 10–15 times until it feels firm.
  • Check the brake fluid level and top up only if needed.

✅ After Repair

  • Start your CX-30 and confirm the brake pedal remains firm.
  • Do a low-speed test in a safe area: gentle stops first, then moderate stops.
  • Listen for abnormal grinding or pulling; recheck pad seating if you notice either.
  • Pad bedding (break-in): make 6–10 moderate stops from 30–40 mph, allowing short cool-down between stops.
  • Re-torque lug nuts after 50–100 miles using a 1/2" drive torque wrench: Torque to 108 Nm (80 ft-lbs)
