🔧 Highlander - Front Brake Pad Replacement

You’ll be replacing the front brake pads and cleaning/greasing the caliper hardware so the brakes are quiet and stop smoothly. This job is very doable at home if you work slowly and carefully.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2–3 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • 🛑 Always support the vehicle on jack stands—never rely only on a floor jack.
  • 🧯 Work on a cool vehicle; hot brakes and rotors can burn skin.
  • 🧤 Wear safety glasses and mechanic gloves to protect eyes and hands from dust and sharp edges.
  • 🧱 Chock (block) the rear wheels so the Highlander cannot roll.
  • 🧪 Brake dust can be harmful; avoid blowing it with air—use brake cleaner and a rag.
  • 🔋 No battery disconnect is required for front brake pad replacement on the Highlander.
  • ⚙️ Do one side at a time so you can look at the other side as a reference.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 🧰 Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • 🧰 Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • 🧰 Wheel chocks
  • 🧰 Lug wrench (21mm) or 21mm socket with breaker bar
  • 🧰 Socket wrench (3/8" or 1/2" drive)
  • 🧰 14mm socket
  • 🧰 17mm socket
  • 🧰 Torque wrench (10–150 ft-lbs range)

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • 🧱 Front brake pad set (left and right) - Qty: 1 set
  • 🧱 Front brake hardware kit (pad clips/shims, if not included with pads) - Qty: 1 set
  • 🧱 High-temperature brake grease - Qty: 1 small tube
  • 🧱 Brake cleaner - Qty: 1–2 cans
  • 🧱 New caliper bracket bolts - Qty: 4 (optional but recommended)

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park the Highlander on a flat, solid surface (cement is best), put the transmission in P, and set the parking brake.
  • 🧱 Place wheel chocks behind the rear tires.
  • 🔧 Loosen the front wheel lug nuts 1/2 turn with the Highlander still on the ground using the 21mm lug wrench or 21mm socket.
  • 📦 Lay out your tools and parts so everything is easy to reach.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Lift and support the front of the Highlander

  • Use the floor jack at the front center jacking point (under the front crossmember) to raise the front of the Highlander.
  • Place jack stands under the left and right front pinch weld or frame points and slowly lower the vehicle onto the stands using the floor jack.
  • Give the Highlander a gentle push to confirm it is stable on the stands.

Step 2: Remove the front wheels

  • Use the 21mm socket or lug wrench to remove the loosened lug nuts and take off both front wheels.
  • Set the wheels aside where they won’t roll away.

Step 3: Inspect the brake assembly

  • Turn the steering wheel (with the engine off) to point the caliper outward for better access (left full lock for right side, right full lock for left side).
  • Look at how the pads sit in the caliper bracket and how the clips are installed. Take a quick photo for reference.

Step 4: Remove the caliper guide pin bolts

  • Locate the two small bolts on the back of the caliper (upper and lower guide pin bolts).
  • Use a 14mm socket and ratchet to loosen and remove both guide pin bolts.
  • Set the bolts aside in a clean spot; you’ll reuse them.

Step 5: Lift and support the caliper

  • Use a flathead screwdriver between the pad and rotor to gently pry the caliper outward a little; this helps relieve pressure and makes removal easier.
  • Lift the caliper off the pads and rotor by hand.
  • Hang the caliper from the suspension spring using a bungee cord or wire hanger. Never let it hang by the rubber hose.

Step 6: Remove the old brake pads and hardware

  • Slide the inner and outer brake pads out of the caliper bracket by hand.
  • Remove the metal pad clips (also called abutment clips) from the bracket using needle-nose pliers if they are tight.
  • Note any anti-squeal shims attached to the old pads and how they’re oriented.

Step 7: Clean the caliper bracket and rotor area

  • Spray brake cleaner on the caliper bracket contact areas and rotor surface; wipe with shop rags.
  • Use a wire brush on the caliper bracket where the pad clips sit to remove rust and dirt. Clean metal gives smooth pad movement.
  • Avoid getting brake cleaner on painted surfaces; wipe off immediately if you do.

Step 8: Install new pad hardware (clips)

  • Snap the new pad clips from your hardware kit into the caliper bracket by hand; they should sit flat and secure.
  • Apply a very thin layer of brake grease to the areas of the clips where the pad ears will slide. Do not get grease on pad friction surfaces.

Step 9: Compress the caliper piston

  • Check the brake fluid level in the master cylinder under the hood; if it’s very full, remove a little with a clean rag or syringe so it doesn’t overflow when you compress the piston.
  • Place an old brake pad against the caliper piston face.
  • Use a C-clamp or disc brake piston tool to slowly push the piston back into the caliper until it is nearly flush with the caliper housing.
  • Go slowly to avoid damaging internal seals.

Step 10: Install the new brake pads

  • If your new pads have separate shims, attach them to the back of the pads as shown in the pad instructions.
  • Apply a very thin smear of brake grease to the metal backing plate ears and the area where they touch the clips (not on the pad surface).
  • Slide the inner and outer pads into the caliper bracket, following your reference photo. The friction material must face the rotor.

Step 11: Reinstall the caliper over the new pads

  • Remove the hanging caliper from the bungee cord.
  • Position the caliper over the new pads and rotor. It should slide on easily if the piston is fully compressed.
  • Align the guide pin bolt holes.
  • Install the upper and lower guide pin bolts by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use the 14mm socket and ratchet to tighten the guide pin bolts, then use a torque wrench with 14mm socket to tighten to 46 Nm (34 ft-lbs).

Step 12: (Optional) Remove and reinstall the caliper bracket

  • This step is only needed if you’re also replacing rotors or the bracket bolts. If you are only doing pads and you didn’t remove the bracket, you can skip to Step 13.
  • If removed, use a 17mm socket to install the caliper bracket bolts to the steering knuckle.
  • Use a torque wrench with 17mm socket to tighten the caliper bracket bolts to 107 Nm (79 ft-lbs).

Step 13: Repeat on the other side

  • Repeat Steps 3–11 on the opposite front wheel.
  • Make sure both sides are assembled the same way (compare visually).

Step 14: Reinstall the wheels

  • Put each wheel back on the hub and hand-thread the lug nuts.
  • Use the 21mm socket to snug the lug nuts in a star pattern, but do not fully tighten while the vehicle is on stands.

Step 15: Lower the vehicle and torque the lug nuts

  • Use the floor jack to lift the Highlander slightly off the jack stands, remove the stands, then lower the vehicle fully to the ground.
  • Use a torque wrench with 21mm socket to tighten each lug nut in a star pattern to 103 Nm (76 ft-lbs).

Step 16: Pump the brake pedal and check fluid

  • Sit in the driver seat and slowly press the brake pedal several times until it feels firm. This seats the new pads.
  • Check the brake fluid level in the master cylinder and top up to the MAX mark if needed.
  • Inspect around each front caliper for any signs of leaks or loose parts.

✅ After Repair

  • 🚗 Start the engine, hold the brake pedal, and make sure it feels firm and consistent.
  • 🛣️ Test drive at low speed first, in a safe area: gentle stops from 10–20 km/h to ensure normal braking and no strange noises.
  • 🛠️ Bed-in the pads: make 8–10 moderate stops from about 40–50 km/h down to 10–15 km/h, allowing some driving time between stops so the brakes can cool slightly. Avoid hard panic stops at first.
  • 👂 Listen for grinding, loud squeals, or pulling to one side—if you notice these, stop and re-check your work.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $350–$550 (parts + labor) for front pads on a Highlander.

DIY Cost: $120–$220 (parts, brake cleaner, grease).

You Save: $230–$330 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates typically run $100–$150/hour. This repair takes a shop about 1–1.5 hours.
