🔧 Front Brake Pads - Replacement

Your Sierra uses a front disc brake setup with caliper-mounted pads. This job means removing the front caliper, swapping the pads, and making sure the caliper slides freely before reassembly. If the rotors are deeply grooved or warped, replace them at the same time.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.5-2.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Work on a flat surface and chock the rear wheels before lifting the truck.
  • Use jack stands. Never rely on the floor jack alone.
  • Front brake components can be hot after driving.
  • Do not press the brake pedal with a caliper removed.
  • If your truck has an electronic parking brake, make sure it is fully released before starting.
  • Brake dust can be harmful. Wear safety glasses and gloves.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated for truck weight)
  • Wheel chocks
  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • 21mm socket
  • 18mm socket
  • Ratchet
  • Breaker bar
  • Torque wrench
  • C-clamp or brake caliper compression tool (specialty)
  • Bungee cord or caliper hanger
  • Flat-blade screwdriver
  • Wire brush
  • Brake cleaner
  • Shop rags

  • Brake grease - Qty: 1 tube

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Loosen the front lug nuts slightly before lifting.
  • Turn the ignition off and keep the key fob away from the vehicle.
  • If the truck has an electronic parking brake, release it before raising the front end.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Raise and secure the truck

  • Use a 21mm socket to loosen the front lug nuts 1/2 turn.
  • Lift the front of the truck with a floor jack.
  • Support it with jack stands under the frame.
  • Remove the front wheel.

Step 2: Remove the brake caliper

  • Use an 18mm socket to remove the caliper guide pin bolts.
  • Lift the caliper off the bracket carefully.
  • Hang the caliper with a bungee cord or caliper hanger. Do not let it dangle by the brake hose.

Step 3: Remove the old pads and hardware

  • Pull the old brake pads out of the caliper bracket.
  • Remove the stainless pad hardware clips from the bracket.
  • Use a flat-blade screwdriver if the clips are stuck.

Step 4: Inspect and clean the bracket

  • Use a wire brush to clean rust from the pad contact points.
  • Spray the bracket with brake cleaner and wipe it dry with shop rags.
  • Check the rotor for cracks, heavy grooves, or blue spots from heat.
  • Clean hardware helps the pads slide smoothly.

Step 5: Compress the caliper piston

  • Use a C-clamp or brake caliper compression tool to slowly push the piston back into the caliper.
  • Go slow and keep the old pad against the piston face if needed.
  • Make sure the brake fluid in the reservoir does not overflow.

Step 6: Install the new hardware and pads

  • Install the new pad clips from the brake pad hardware kit.
  • Apply a thin layer of brake grease to the pad ears and clip contact points only.
  • Install the new front brake pads into the bracket.

Step 7: Reinstall the caliper

  • Slide the caliper back over the new pads.
  • Install the guide pin bolts with the 18mm socket.
  • Torque to 44 Nm (32 ft-lbs).

Step 8: Reinstall the wheel

  • Put the wheel back on and hand-tighten the lug nuts.
  • Lower the truck to the ground with the floor jack.
  • Use a 21mm socket to snug the lug nuts in a star pattern.
  • Torque to 190 Nm (140 ft-lbs).

Step 9: Repeat on the other side

  • Replace the pads on the opposite front wheel the same way.
  • Always replace brake pads in pairs.

✅ After Repair

  • Press the brake pedal slowly several times until it feels firm.
  • Check brake fluid level and top off only if needed.
  • Start the truck and verify there are no warning lights.
  • Test the brakes at low speed in a safe area first.
  • Use a gentle break-in for the new pads for the first 200 miles.
