🔧 Ascent - Front Brake Pad Replacement
You’ll remove the front wheels, swing the front brake calipers out of the way, and replace the brake pads (and pad hardware if included). This restores safe braking and prevents rotor damage when pads are worn down.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.5-3.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- 🛑 Work on level ground and support the Ascent on jack stands—never rely on a jack alone.
- 🧤 Brake dust is harmful—wear a mask and avoid blowing dust with compressed air.
- 🔥 Brakes can be hot after driving—let them cool before starting.
- 🧯 Keep brake fluid off paint; it can damage the finish.
- 🔋 Battery disconnect is not required for front brake pads.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
- Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
- Wheel chocks
- 19mm socket
- Breaker bar (1/2" drive)
- Torque wrench (10-200 Nm range)
- Ratchet (3/8" drive)
- 14mm socket
- 17mm socket
- C-clamp (6" minimum) or disc brake piston compressor (specialty)
- Flat trim tool or flathead screwdriver
- Wire brush
- Bungee cord or mechanics wire
- Brake cleaner spray
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
- Dust mask

- DOT 3 brake fluid - Qty: 1 (small top-off)
đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
- Crack (loosen) the front lug nuts 1/2 turn before lifting the vehicle.
- Open the hood and locate the brake fluid reservoir; keep the cap sitting on top (not tightened) so pressure can vent.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Lift the front and remove the wheels
- Use floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) to lift the front at the proper jacking point.
- Set the vehicle down onto jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum).
- Remove the lug nuts using a 19mm socket and breaker bar (1/2" drive), then remove both front wheels.
Step 2: Turn the steering for easier access
- Turn the steering wheel so the caliper you’re working on faces outward (more room to reach bolts).
- Work one side at a time.
Step 3: Remove the caliper slide pin bolts
- Find the two caliper slide pin bolts on the back of the caliper.
- Use a 14mm socket and ratchet (3/8" drive) to remove the upper and lower slide pin bolts.
- Slide pins are the two bolts that let the caliper “float”.
Step 4: Swing the caliper up and support it
- Carefully swing the caliper away from the pads/rotor.
- Hang the caliper from the suspension using a bungee cord or mechanics wire.
- Do not let the caliper hang by the brake hose.
Step 5: Remove old pads and hardware
- Pull the inner and outer pads out of the bracket by hand. If stuck, gently pry with a flat trim tool or flathead screwdriver.
- Remove the stainless pad clips (hardware) from the bracket if your new pads include replacements.
- Spray the bracket contact areas with brake cleaner spray and scrub with a wire brush.
Step 6: Compress the caliper piston
- Before compressing, check the brake fluid reservoir level under the hood—remove a little fluid if it’s near MAX (so it doesn’t overflow).
- Use a C-clamp (6" minimum) or disc brake piston compressor (specialty) to slowly push the caliper piston back into the caliper.
- Compress slowly and smoothly; stop if you feel unusual resistance.
Step 7: Install new hardware and pads
- Install the new stainless hardware clips into the bracket (if provided) by hand.
- Apply a thin film of brake caliper grease (silicone-based) where the pad “ears” slide on the clips (metal-to-metal contact points only).
- Install the new inner and outer pads into the bracket.
- Keep grease off pad friction material.
Step 8: Reinstall the caliper and torque bolts
- Swing the caliper back over the new pads.
- Reinstall the slide pin bolts using a 14mm socket and ratchet (3/8" drive).
- Torque to 27 Nm (20 ft-lbs) using a torque wrench (10-200 Nm range).
Step 9: Repeat on the other front side
- Repeat Steps 2–8 on the other front wheel.
- Both sides must be replaced together.
Step 10: Reinstall wheels and torque lug nuts
- Put both wheels back on and hand-thread the lug nuts.
- Lower the vehicle off the jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum) using the floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum).
- Tighten lug nuts in a star pattern using a torque wrench (10-200 Nm range).
- Torque to 120 Nm (89 ft-lbs).
âś… After Repair
- With the engine OFF, press the brake pedal slowly 10–15 times until it feels firm (this seats the pistons).
- Check brake fluid level and top off with DOT 3 brake fluid if needed (do not overfill).
- Start the engine and confirm the brake pedal feels normal before moving.
- Do a low-speed test in a safe area: confirm no pulling, grinding, or warning lights.
- Pad bedding (break-in): make 6–10 moderate stops from ~35 mph to 5 mph, letting brakes cool a bit between stops.
