🔧 Insight - Front Brake Pad Replacement
You’ll remove the front wheels, swing the front calipers up, swap the pads, then reassemble and pump the brake pedal to restore normal pedal feel. This matters because worn pads reduce stopping power and can damage the rotors if you wait too long.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.5-3.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- 🛑 Support your Insight with jack stands; never rely on a jack alone.
- 🧤 Brake dust is harmful—wear gloves and a dust mask; avoid blowing dust with compressed air.
- 🔥 Brakes can be hot after driving—let everything cool before you start.
- ⚠️ Do not press the brake pedal while a caliper is off the rotor.
- 🔋 Battery disconnect is not required for front pad replacement on your Insight.

- Brake parts cleaner - Qty: 1
đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift to P, and set the parking brake.
- Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
- Crack loose the front lug nuts with a 19mm socket and breaker bar before lifting.
- Open the hood and locate the brake fluid reservoir; keep the cap on, but be ready to check fluid level after compressing pistons.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Lift and secure the front end
- Lift the front of the car using a floor jack (rated 2-ton minimum) at the correct front jacking point.
- Set the car down onto jack stands (rated 2-ton minimum).
- Remove the front wheels using a 19mm socket and 3/8" drive ratchet.
Step 2: Access the front caliper
- Turn the steering wheel to give yourself more space (left for right side, right for left side).
- If there’s a ridge on the rotor, gently pry the caliper outward a little using a flat-blade screwdriver between the pad and rotor. Small movement is enough.
Step 3: Remove the caliper (swing it up)
- Remove the two caliper slide pin bolts using a 12mm socket and 3/8" drive ratchet.
- Carefully lift the caliper off the bracket.
- Hang the caliper from the strut spring using a wire hook (brake caliper hanger). Never let it dangle by the hose.
Step 4: Remove old pads and hardware
- Pull the inner and outer pads out of the bracket by hand.
- Remove the pad clips/hardware from the bracket (use a flat-blade screwdriver if needed).
- Clean the bracket pad lands (where the clips sit) using brake cleaner spray, shop towels, and a small wire brush.
Step 5: Service the slide pins
- Pull each slide pin out of the bracket by hand.
- Wipe old grease off using shop towels.
- Apply a thin, even coat of brake caliper grease (silicone-based) to the pin and reinstall it. (A “slide pin” is the smooth bolt the caliper glides on.)
- Make sure each pin moves smoothly in and out.
Step 6: Install new pad hardware and pads
- Install the new pad clips from the brake pad hardware kit (clips/shims) into the bracket.
- Apply a very light film of brake caliper grease (silicone-based) to the clip contact points where the pad “ears” slide. Keep grease off pad friction material.
- Install the new inner and outer pads into the bracket.
Step 7: Compress the caliper piston
- Place one old brake pad against the piston face.
- Use a C-clamp (6" minimum) to slowly push the piston back into the caliper until it bottoms.
- Check the brake fluid reservoir under the hood; if it rises near “MAX,” remove a little fluid only if needed (use shop towels to protect paint from spills).
Step 8: Reinstall the caliper
- Lower the caliper back over the new pads.
- Install and tighten the slide pin bolts using a 12mm socket and torque wrench.
- Torque to 26 Nm (19 ft-lbs)
Step 9: Reinstall wheels
- Reinstall the wheels and hand-thread the lug nuts.
- Lower the car off the jack stands (rated 2-ton minimum) using the floor jack (rated 2-ton minimum).
- Tighten lug nuts in a star pattern using a 19mm socket and torque wrench.
- Torque to 108 Nm (80 ft-lbs)
Step 10: Restore pedal feel
- Before driving, pump the brake pedal slowly 8–12 times until it feels firm.
- With the engine on, hold firm pedal pressure for 15 seconds to confirm it doesn’t sink.
âś… After Repair
- Do a low-speed test in a safe area: confirm normal braking, no pulling, and no grinding noises.
- Recheck brake fluid level and top off only if needed.
- Pad break-in: make 6–10 moderate stops from ~30–35 mph to ~5 mph, with light driving in between to cool. Avoid hard stops at first.
- After a short drive, visually check for any fluid leaks and confirm lug nuts are still properly seated.
