RAV4 - Front Brake Pad Replacement 🛠️
Below is a beginner-friendly guide for replacing the front brake pads on your 2018 RAV4 SE AWD.
Quick safety check: Only do this if you can safely lift and support the vehicle and are comfortable working around brakes. If anything feels unsafe, stop and ask.
Two quick questions before you start:
- 🧰 Do you have a solid jack and a pair of jack stands (not just the factory scissor jack)?
- 🧱 Do you have wheel chocks (blocks) to stop the car from rolling?
If not, get those first. They are essential for safety.
RAV4 - Parts & Specs 📦
- 🧩 Front brake pads: Set of 4 pads (2 per side), for your RAV4 SE (with 296 mm front rotors).
- 🧩 Pad hardware kit: New stainless pad clips/shims that the pads slide in. Highly recommended.
- 🧴 Brake grease: High-temp synthetic brake lubricant for pad ears and hardware.
- 🧴 Brake cleaner: Spray to clean rotors and caliper parts.
Key torque specs (front):
- 🔧 Caliper slide pin bolts: ~25 ft-lb (34 N·m)
- 🔧 Caliper bracket bolts: ~79 ft-lb (107 N·m)
- 🔧 Wheel lug nuts: 76 ft-lb (103 N·m)
Use a torque wrench if possible for these.
RAV4 - Tools You’ll Need 🔧
- 🧰 Floor jack and jack stands – to lift and safely support the RAV4.
- 🧱 Wheel chocks – blocks behind the rear wheels so the car cannot roll.
- 🔧 Socket set:
- 21 mm socket – wheel lug nuts.
- 17 mm socket – caliper bracket bolts (front).
- 14 mm socket – caliper slide pin bolts (front).
- 🔧 Ratchet and a breaker bar (long handle) – helps loosen tight bolts.
- 🔧 Torque wrench – tool that lets you tighten bolts to a specific torque.
- 🗜️ C-clamp or disc brake piston tool – to push the caliper piston back in.
- 🪛 Flathead screwdriver – to gently pry off clips and help remove pads.
- 🧽 Wire brush – to clean rust/dirt from the bracket where pads sit.
- 😷 Safety gear: gloves, safety glasses, and a dust mask (brake dust).
All of these tools and parts are available from HowToo below this guide; you can add them to your cart from the parts section.
RAV4 - Prep & Safety Steps ⚠️
- 🛑 Step 1 – Park and secure the RAV4
- Park on a flat, solid surface.
- Shift to P (Park) and set the parking brake.
- Place wheel chocks behind both rear wheels.
- 🛞 Step 2 – Loosen front wheel lug nuts
- Use the 21 mm socket and a breaker bar.
- Loosen each lug nut about 1/2 turn while the wheels are still on the ground. Do not remove them yet.
- 🧱 Step 3 – Lift and support the front
- Use the floor jack on the front center jacking point (under the front subframe crossmember).
- Raise until both front wheels are off the ground.
- Place jack stands under the pinch welds (reinforced seam under each front door).
- Lower the RAV4 gently onto the stands. Never work under a car supported only by a jack.
- 🔩 Step 4 – Remove front wheels
- Remove the loosened lug nuts and take off both front wheels.
- Slide the wheel under the car as a backup safety support (optional but smart).
RAV4 - Remove Old Front Pads 🧱
- 👀 Step 5 – Inspect the brake assembly
- You’ll see the rotor (big disc), the caliper (clamp over the rotor), and the caliper bracket (holds the pads).
- 🔧 Step 6 – Remove caliper slide pin bolts
- On the back of the caliper, remove the two 14 mm bolts (top and bottom).
- Support the caliper with one hand so it doesn’t drop.
- 🪢 Step 7 – Hang the caliper
- Lift the caliper off the rotor.
- Use a wire hanger or bungee cord to hang it from the spring or strut.
- Do not let the caliper hang by the rubber brake hose.
- 🧱 Step 8 – Remove the old pads
- Slide the pads out of the caliper bracket.
- Note which pad has the wear indicator tab (small metal finger) and where it was located (usually inner pad).
- 🧼 Step 9 – Remove and clean pad hardware
- Pull off the old stainless clips from the caliper bracket.
- Use a wire brush to clean the areas where the clips sit (remove rust and dirt).
- Spray with brake cleaner and let dry.
- 🧴 Step 10 – Install new hardware
- Snap the new pad clips into the bracket.
- Apply a very thin layer of brake grease on the areas where the pad “ears” will slide.
- Do not get grease on the rotor or pad friction surfaces.
RAV4 - Compress Caliper Piston 🗜️
- 🧴 Step 11 – Check brake fluid level
- Open the hood and find the brake fluid reservoir (driver side near the firewall).
- If fluid is at or above MAX, remove a little with a clean syringe/turkey baster so it doesn’t overflow when you push the piston in.
- 🗜️ Step 12 – Push the piston back
- Place an old pad against the piston face inside the caliper.
- Use a C-clamp or piston tool between the pad and the back of the caliper.
- Slowly tighten until the piston is fully seated (flush with the caliper housing).
- Go slowly to avoid damaging seals.
RAV4 - Install New Front Pads 🧩
- 🧱 Step 13 – Fit new pads into bracket
- Install the new pads into the caliper bracket, sliding the “ears” into the new clips.
- Make sure the pad with the wear indicator tab goes in the same position as the old one (usually inner pad, bottom side).
- Apply a thin layer of grease on the back of the pads where they contact the caliper (not on friction surface).
- 🔧 Step 14 – Reinstall the caliper
- Lower the caliper over the new pads.
- Line up the caliper slide pin holes with the bracket.
- Install the 14 mm slide pin bolts by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
- Tighten to 25 ft-lb (34 N·m) with a torque wrench.
- 🔁 Step 15 – Repeat on the other side
- Do the exact same steps on the other front wheel.
- Always replace pads in pairs (both front wheels).
RAV4 - Reinstall Wheels & Final Checks ✅
- 🛞 Step 16 – Reinstall front wheels
- Put the wheels back on and hand-thread all lug nuts.
- Snug them in a star pattern with the 21 mm socket (not fully tight yet).
- 🧱 Step 17 – Lower the RAV4
- Jack the front up slightly, remove jack stands, and lower the vehicle to the ground.
- 🔧 Step 18 – Torque the lug nuts
- Use a torque wrench and 21 mm socket.
- Tighten lug nuts in a star pattern to 76 ft-lb (103 N·m).
- 🦶 Step 19 – Pump the brake pedal
- Before driving, sit in the driver’s seat and pump the brake pedal slowly 10–15 times.
- The pedal will feel soft at first, then firm up as the pads seat against the rotors.
- 🧴 Step 20 – Recheck brake fluid
- Check the brake fluid reservoir again and adjust to the MAX line if needed.
RAV4 - Bedding In New Pads 🚗
- 🛣️ Step 21 – Bed (break in) the pads
- Find a safe, empty road.
- Do about 5–6 medium stops from 40–10 km/h (25–6 mph), then 3–4 harder stops from 60–20 km/h (37–12 mph).
- Do not come to a complete stop and hold the pedal hard right after a heavy stop; keep rolling a bit to avoid hot spots.
Infotainment / Settings (Not Required Here) 📱
Your RAV4 does not require any special infotainment or scan-tool steps for front pad replacement. No ABS or brake system reset is needed for this job.
