🔧 Q5 - Front Brake Pad Replacement

On your Q5, the front pads sit inside the front brake calipers and clamp the brake rotors when you press the pedal. Pad replacement is straightforward, but the exact steps and torque specs depend on which front caliper/brake package you have.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.5-3.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Work on a level surface and support the vehicle with jack stands (never the jack alone).
  • ⚠️ Brakes may be hot; let them cool before touching calipers/rotors.
  • ⚠️ Do not press the brake pedal with a caliper removed.
  • ⚠️ Brake dust is harmful; use brake cleaner, not compressed air.
  • ⚠️ Keep grease and brake fluid off pad/rotor friction surfaces.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks
  • 17mm wheel bolt socket
  • 1/2" drive breaker bar
  • 1/2" drive torque wrench (20–200 Nm range)
  • Trim clip tool
  • Small flathead screwdriver
  • Digital caliper or ruler (mm/in)
  • Brake caliper piston compressor tool (specialty)
  • Bungee cord or mechanics wire
  • Brake cleaner spray
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Front brake pad set - Qty: 1
  • Front brake pad wear sensor (if equipped) - Qty: 1
  • Brake caliper hardware kit (clips/pad guides) - Qty: 1
  • Brake lubricant (silicone or ceramic) - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and put the transmission in Park.
  • Chock the rear wheels with wheel chocks.
  • Open the hood and locate the brake fluid reservoir. You may need to remove a little fluid later if it rises when compressing pistons.
  • Two quick questions so I give you the exact caliper steps + torque specs:
    • Can you upload a clear photo of your front brake caliper (through the wheel or with the wheel off)?
    • Do you see a small wire plugged into the inner pad on the left-front wheel (pad wear sensor)?

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Loosen the front wheel bolts

  • Use a 17mm wheel bolt socket with a 1/2" drive breaker bar to loosen the front wheel bolts about 1/2 turn while the tire is still on the ground.

Step 2: Safely lift and support the front corner

  • Use a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) at the approved lift point and raise the vehicle.
  • Place jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum) under a solid support point and lower the vehicle onto the stand.
  • Shake the car lightly to confirm stable.

Step 3: Remove the wheel

  • Finish removing the wheel bolts using the 17mm wheel bolt socket.
  • Remove the wheel and set it aside.
  • When reinstalling later: Torque to 140 Nm (103 ft-lbs) using a 1/2" drive torque wrench.

Step 4: Identify your front caliper type (so the rest is exact)

  • Look at the caliper face:
  • If you see a big spring clip on the outside and the caliper looks like it “slides” on two pins, it’s a sliding caliper.
  • If it’s bulky with multiple pistons and looks “fixed” (doesn’t slide), it’s a fixed multi-piston caliper.
  • Check for a pad wear sensor wire going into the inner pad (usually left front).
  • Use a digital caliper or ruler (mm/in) to measure rotor outer diameter if you can (common sizes differ by package).

Step 5: Send the photo + sensor confirmation

  • Upload the caliper photo and tell me whether the wear sensor wire is present.
  • Once I have that, I’ll give you the exact removal steps and the correct caliper bolt/bracket torque specs for your brake package.

✅ After Repair

  • After pad replacement (once completed), you’ll pump the brake pedal until it feels firm before driving.
  • You’ll verify brake fluid level is at the correct mark and check for warning lights.
  • You’ll do a careful test drive and bed-in procedure specific to the pad type.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $350-$700 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $90-$250 (parts only)

You Save: $260-$450 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 1.5-2.5 hours.
