🔧 Front Brake Pads - Replacement

The front pads on your Camry wear down over time and should be replaced before they damage the rotors. On this hybrid, take extra care with the brake system because the car can use regenerative braking and electric brake control logic. This job is very doable for a first-time DIYer if you go slowly and keep everything clean.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 2-3 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Work on a flat surface and chock the rear wheels before lifting the front.
  • Use jack stands under the car. Never rely on the jack alone.
  • Do not press the brake pedal with a caliper removed.
  • Hybrid brake systems can behave differently with the car in READY mode. Keep the car OFF while servicing the brakes.
  • Let the brakes cool before touching them. Rotors and calipers can get very hot.
  • Wear safety glasses and gloves. Brake dust is dirty and should not be inhaled.
  • If the brake pedal feels soft after the repair, stop and recheck your work before driving.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Ratchet
  • Torque wrench

  • Brake grease - Qty: 1 tube
  • Brake cleaner - Qty: 1 can

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Put the transmission in Park.
  • Turn the ignition OFF and keep the key/fob away from the car.
  • Loosen the front lug nuts slightly before lifting the vehicle.
  • If your car is equipped with an electronic parking brake, leave it set unless the rear brakes are being serviced.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Loosen the front wheels

  • Use a 21mm lug wrench to crack loose the front lug nuts on both sides.
  • Do not remove them yet. Just loosen them one turn.

Step 2: Lift and support the front of the car

  • Use a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) to lift the front at the proper front center lift point.
  • Place jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum) under the front support points.
  • Lower the car gently onto the stands and give it a shake to confirm stability.

Step 3: Remove the wheels

  • Use the 21mm lug wrench to remove the lug nuts.
  • Set the wheels aside flat so they do not roll.

Step 4: Remove the caliper

  • Use a 14mm socket and ratchet to remove the caliper slide pin bolts.
  • Lift the caliper off the bracket carefully.
  • Hang the caliper with a brake caliper hanger hook. Do not let it hang by the hose.

Step 5: Remove the old pads and hardware

  • Slide the old pads out of the caliper bracket.
  • Use a flat blade screwdriver to remove the pad clips if needed.
  • Remove the old hardware and compare it to the new kit.

Step 6: Clean and inspect the bracket

  • Use a wire brush and brake cleaner to clean the pad contact points.
  • Check the rotor surface for deep grooves, cracks, or heavy rust.
  • Clean metal slides move the pads better.

Step 7: Install the new hardware and pads

  • Install the new clips from the brake hardware kit.
  • Apply a thin layer of brake grease to the pad ears and contact points only.
  • Install the new pads into the bracket.

Step 8: Retract the caliper piston

  • Use a C-clamp to slowly push the caliper piston back into the bore.
  • Go slowly and keep the old inner pad in place while compressing if needed.
  • Make sure the brake fluid reservoir under the hood does not overfill.

Step 9: Reinstall the caliper

  • Set the caliper back over the new pads.
  • Install the slide pin bolts by hand first.
  • Use a 14mm socket and torque wrench to tighten the caliper bolts to 34 Nm (25 ft-lbs).

Step 10: Reinstall the wheel

  • Put the wheel back on and start all lug nuts by hand.
  • Lower the car enough for the tire to touch the ground lightly.
  • Use a 21mm lug wrench to snug the lug nuts in a star pattern.
  • Use a torque wrench to tighten the lug nuts to 103 Nm (76 ft-lbs).

Step 11: Repeat on the other side

  • Repeat the same steps on the opposite front wheel.
  • Replace pads in pairs.

✅ After Repair

  • Before driving, pump the brake pedal several times until it feels firm.
  • Check the brake fluid level and top off only if needed.
  • Start the car and verify the brake warning lights are off.
  • Do a slow test drive in a safe area.
  • For the first 200 miles, avoid hard braking unless necessary.
  • Listen for noises. Light squeal at first can happen if the pads are bedding in.
