🔧 Front Brake Pads - Replacement

Replacing the front brake pads on your Rogue restores stopping power and helps prevent rotor damage. This job involves removing the front caliper, swapping the pads, and compressing the caliper piston before reassembly.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 1.5-2.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Work on a flat surface and chock the rear wheels before lifting the vehicle.
  • Use jack stands; never rely on a floor jack alone.
  • Do not press the brake pedal with the caliper removed.
  • Support the caliper with a hanger or wire so the brake hose is not stretched.
  • Brake parts and rotors can be hot after driving.
  • No battery disconnect is required for this repair.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands

  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • 21mm lug wrench
  • 14mm socket
  • 19mm wrench
  • Ratchet
  • Torque wrench
  • Brake caliper compression tool (specialty)
  • Small flathead screwdriver
  • Wire brush
  • Brake cleaner
  • Bungee cord or mechanic's wire

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Put the transmission in Park.
  • Loosen the front lug nuts slightly before lifting.
  • Turn the steering wheel for better access to the side you are working on.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Lift the front of the vehicle

  • Use a floor jack to raise the front of the Rogue at the proper lift point.
  • Place jack stands under the front support points and lower the vehicle onto them.
  • Remove the front wheel with a 21mm lug wrench.

Step 2: Remove the caliper

  • Use a 14mm socket and ratchet to remove the caliper slide pin bolts.
  • Lift the caliper off the bracket carefully.
  • Hang the caliper with bungee cord or mechanic's wire so the brake hose is not strained.

Step 3: Remove the old pads and hardware

  • Slide the old brake pads out of the bracket.
  • Remove the pad clips and hardware.
  • Use a small flathead screwdriver if the pads are stuck.
  • Clean the bracket contact points with a wire brush and brake cleaner.

Step 4: Compress the caliper piston

  • Use a brake caliper compression tool to slowly push the piston back into the caliper.
  • Make sure the piston goes in straight and smoothly.
  • Go slow to avoid damaging seals.

Step 5: Install the new hardware and pads

  • Install the new pad clips from the brake pad hardware kit.
  • Apply a thin layer of brake grease to the pad contact points and hardware where needed.
  • Install the new front brake pads in the bracket.
  • Make sure the pads sit fully in place.

Step 6: Reinstall the caliper

  • Set the caliper back over the new pads.
  • Install the slide pin bolts by hand first.
  • Use a 14mm socket to tighten the bolts.
  • Torque to 32 Nm (24 ft-lbs).

Step 7: Reinstall the wheel

  • Put the wheel back on and thread the lug nuts by hand.
  • Lower the Rogue to the ground.
  • Use a 21mm lug wrench to snug the lug nuts in a star pattern.
  • Torque to 108 Nm (80 ft-lbs).

Step 8: Repeat on the other side

  • Replace the pads on the opposite front wheel the same way.
  • Always replace brake pads in pairs.

✅ After Repair

  • Press the brake pedal several times before driving to seat the caliper pistons.
  • Check that the brake pedal feels firm.
  • Inspect both front wheels for rubbing or unusual noise.
  • Test drive slowly at first and confirm normal braking.
  • For the first 200 miles, avoid hard stops unless needed.
