🔧 Compass - Front Brake Pad Replacement
Replacing the front brake pads restores safe stopping power and prevents rotor damage. You’ll remove the front calipers, swap the pads, compress the caliper pistons, and reinstall everything with the correct torque.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.0-2.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Work on level ground and support your Compass on jack stands before going under or removing wheels.
- ⚠️ Do not press the brake pedal while the caliper is off the rotor.
- ⚠️ Brake dust is harmful—use brake cleaner, not compressed air.
- ⚠️ Keep grease off pad friction material and the rotor face.
- ⚠️ Watch brake fluid level while compressing pistons; it can overflow.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for front pads.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
- Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)

- Metric socket set (8mm-21mm, 3/8-inch & 1/2-inch drive)
- Metric wrench set (8mm-21mm)
- C-clamp (6-inch)
- Brake caliper hanger hook
- Flathead screwdriver
- Wire brush

- Silicone brake lubricant - Qty: 1
đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, put the transmission in gear, and set the parking brake.
- Chock the rear wheels with wheel chocks.
- Crack the front lug nuts loose using a breaker bar and the correct socket from your metric socket set (8mm-21mm).
- Open the hood and loosen the brake fluid reservoir cap (leave it sitting on top). This helps the piston push back easier.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Lift and secure the front end
- Use a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) to lift the front of your Compass at the proper front jacking point.
- Set it down onto jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum) and give the vehicle a careful shake test.
Step 2: Remove the front wheel
- Remove the lug nuts using the correct socket from your metric socket set (8mm-21mm, 3/8-inch & 1/2-inch drive).
- Remove the wheel and slide it under the rocker as a backup safety measure. Extra safety if a stand slips.
Step 3: Locate the caliper and remove the caliper guide pin bolts
- Turn the steering wheel to give yourself more room at the side you’re working on.
- On the back of the caliper, remove the two caliper guide pin bolts using the correct tool from your metric socket set (8mm-21mm) or metric wrench set (8mm-21mm).
- Guide pins are the sliding bolts the caliper rides on.
Step 4: Lift off the caliper and support it
- Carefully lift the caliper off the rotor. If it’s tight, gently pry with a flathead screwdriver.
- Hang the caliper from the suspension spring using a brake caliper hanger hook.
- Do not let the caliper hang by the rubber brake hose.
Step 5: Remove old pads and hardware
- Pull the inner and outer pads out of the bracket by hand.
- Remove the pad abutment clips (hardware) from the bracket.
- Clean the pad “shelves” on the bracket using a wire brush and shop rags.
Step 6: Retract (compress) the caliper piston
- Place an old pad against the piston face to protect it.
- Use a C-clamp (6-inch) to slowly compress the piston fully back into the caliper.
- Keep an eye on the brake fluid reservoir so it doesn’t overflow; clean spills immediately with shop rags.
Step 7: Install new hardware and pads
- Install the new abutment clips/hardware into the caliper bracket.
- Apply a thin film of silicone brake lubricant where the pad “ears” contact the clips. Do not get any on the pad friction surface.
- Install the new inner and outer pads into the bracket.
Step 8: Reinstall the caliper and torque fasteners
- Slide the caliper over the new pads.
- Install the caliper guide pin bolts using the correct socket from your metric socket set (8mm-21mm).
- Torque to 35 Nm (26 ft-lbs) for the front caliper guide pin bolts.
Step 9: Reinstall the wheel and torque lug nuts
- Put the wheel back on and hand-thread the lug nuts.
- Lower the vehicle off the jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum) using the floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum).
- Torque the lug nuts in a star pattern using a torque wrench (20-200 ft-lbs range).
- Torque to 135 Nm (100 ft-lbs) for the wheel lug nuts.
Step 10: Repeat on the other front wheel
- Repeat Steps 1-9 for the other front side.
- Keep pad sets matched left-to-right (don’t mix old/new).
âś… After Repair
- Before starting the engine, pump the brake pedal slowly 10-15 times until it feels firm. This seats the pistons against the new pads.
- Check the brake fluid level and reinstall/tighten the reservoir cap.
- Do a low-speed test in a safe area. Confirm no pulling, grinding, or warning lights.
- Pad bed-in (break-in): make 6-10 moderate stops from ~30 mph down to ~5 mph, letting brakes cool slightly between stops. Avoid hard panic stops for the first 200 miles.
