🔧 Tacoma - Front Brake Pad Replacement
Replacing the front brake pads restores stopping power and helps prevent rotor damage. On your Tacoma, the front pads ride in a floating caliper setup, so the job is straightforward if you take your time and keep the parts clean.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 1.5-2.5 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- Work on a flat surface and chock the rear wheels.
- Use jack stands; never rely on a hydraulic jack alone.
- Do not press the brake pedal with the caliper removed.
- Support the caliper with a hanger or wire so the brake hose is not stretched.
- Brake dust can be harmful; use brake cleaner, not compressed air.
- Manual transmission: set the parking brake and leave it in gear.

- Lift the front of the Tacoma with the floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum).
- Place it securely on jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum).

- Hang the caliper with a wire hanger or bungee cord.
Step 3: Remove the old pads and hardware
- Slide the old brake pads out of the bracket.
- Remove the pad clips and hardware if your new kit includes replacements.
- Use the flat-blade screwdriver if the pads are stuck.
Step 4: Compress the caliper piston
- Check the brake fluid reservoir under the hood before compressing the piston.
- Use the C-clamp or brake caliper compression tool to slowly push the piston all the way in.
- Go slow to avoid fluid overflow.
Step 5: Install the new pads and hardware
- Clean the bracket with brake cleaner and shop towels.
- Install the new pad clips and hardware.
- Apply a light coat of brake grease to the pad contact points and backing plate tabs only.
- Install the new front brake pads.
Step 6: Reinstall the caliper

- Use the 14mm socket and torque wrench to tighten the slide pin bolts to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs).
Step 7: Reinstall the wheel
- Put the wheel back on.
- Thread the lug nuts by hand first.
- Lower the Tacoma to the ground.
- Use the torque wrench and 19mm socket to tighten the lug nuts to 113 Nm (83 ft-lbs) in a star pattern.
✅ After Repair
- Press the brake pedal several times before moving the truck.
- Make sure the pedal feels firm.
- Check brake fluid level and top off if needed.
- Test the brakes at low speed first.
- New pads need a short break-in period. Make several gentle stops before hard braking.
